Mojang Shutting Down? Not A Chance!

10-YEAR PLAN FOR MOJANG

Some rumors have been flying around about a possible Mojang shut-down, but is there any truth to it? According to Notch, not a chance. Following an interview with GameSpot, Notch said, "Hopefully, we are going to keep making money at Mojang, but if we don't, that's fine. We just have 10 fun years, and then the last year, we'd say to our employees, 'If we don't make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead. So you might want to look for new jobs.'"

For clarification, Notch isn't saying "10 years from today", that Mojang will only last until 2024. Rather, the plan is said to take effect when or if Mojang ever stops making a profit. The 10-year plan is in place just in case Mojang ever stops making a profit - which currently, is not a problem in the slightest - and that they have "money saved to have ten more years to come up with a new project, without making a single cent in that time."

For some, this may easily translate as a foreboding end to Minecraft and according to the source, may get some to thinking that the 10-year plan means that Mojang is only looking at 10 more years of being a developer of Minecraft. However, that isn't necessarily the case. Considering that Minecraft is one of the biggest games to date - with expansions to the PS4 and Xbox One consoles on their way, among others - it's highly unlikely that this will happen anytime soon. The 10-year plan includes the continuation of Mojang and Minecraft as a whole, and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. With the addition of Minecraft Realms, Mojang is still very much on course to stay in the game, and continue providing support and updates for everyone's favorite sandbox game.

As a celebration, fellow Minecraft developer 4J Studios has just announced the free Minecraft 2nd Birthday Skin Pack, re-released, following the releases of the Marvel Spider-Man Skin Pack and the Marvel Avengers Skin Pack earlier. Don't worry, Minecraft isn't going anywhere!

Why is this even a topic?

Business is business, simple as that. When it's profitable, you reap the benefits. When it looks like it's about to stop being profitable, you either have a way of bringing in more money or sell it off to some hopeful soul.

Any person that makes business decisions based on a rumour, or some stupid kid-on-the-Internet's rumour, is an idiot that deserves to be run out of business. And these guys (Mojang) don't appear to have that problem at all.

It's just business.

Just noticing a lot of people in here saying "Minecraft lives!" and similar, just so ya know, Notch once said if Minecraft stopped selling, {EG, Mojang stopped making a profit from the game} he would release the source code and call it a day. Even if {God, Lord Herobrine, and anyone else listening forbid} Mojang should ever go down, Minecraft would live on as long as the Internet itself. Also, where did this "rumor" come from? because I never heard of it, and it seems a lot of others here didn't either.

Well that's good to know... Even though I never heard of this rumor.

Though its almost hard to imagine what more they could add to minecraft, since so much has happened in just two years... Aha, i'm saying this now and in the future I will most likely remember myself saying this and think how stupid I was.

If you look at the sheer amount of money Mojang has made JUST of of Minecraft they could last another 100 years, the math is easy, ~$25 X 35,000,000 copies on all systems as of February = $875,000,000! I'm sure they'll last longer than 10 years. I know a lot of this goes to Notch, but that's still over 100 million dollars.

I think its pretty unlikely since Minecraft itself has millions on downloads, not even counting the Pocket Edition, Xbox, and Playstation versions. Mojang has other games as well, such as cobalt which is not as popular as Minecraft but is still doing pretty good. Then, when you look at how much Minecraft merchandise is being distributed around the world, I think there is no doubt that Mojang is in pretty good shape and will last for a LONG time (unless some short term causes make them go bankrupt or something). So overall, I think Mojang is totally fine right now and all of the success they made off of minecraft will last for decades.

Wise move for Mojang to have a contingency plan, for Indie developers, it must be tough to make a start. And i am just glad they won't stop updating till 2024

Minecraft will always be here. But, sadly, Mojang has a lot of tough competition. Roblox, Blockland, And Terraria,( Which, along with Minecraft are the top PC games in the world) Make millions a year as well. Of course, Roblox is the best money making, with Terraria and then Blockland following.

If Mojang stops making money with Minecraft in the distant future, I hope their 10-year plan includes removing all DRM attached to the game so it doesn't have to call in just to play the game (offline). Otherwise it'll be bricked forever. Another idea would be for someone else to take over the player skin database...

I have an idea for Minecraft. I am not the only one who has thought of the either.
Add a Heaven/Sky Realm!?! One that uses a craftable portal. (Using one of either Redstone, Glowstone, Quartz, Snow or other block?) Something that can be crafted using the same method as Nether Portals. (But with a blue or yellow portal?)

Another idea I have. There is a hidden block in Minecraft. It can be used as Polished Stone. (Current ID for Texture: double_stone_slab, Meta Data: 8, Texture used: Top of Stone Slab.) It can be crafted using 2 stone slabs? (It drops itself when broke.)

And Please, Please add Stone, Cobblestone and Polished Stone Lanterns to Minecraft? (Crafting recipe is like Jack-O-Lanterns. But with stone stuff.)
