NAMING - IN THE BEGINNING
I had the curious privilege of seeing the internet as we know it form into what it is today from my childhood. There was a dark time, a scary time, when the internet wasn't really a thing people knew about, or used. We had to do some scary stuff to get information back then. DARK things. Things like, "asking people questions in real life". Who even has time for that, right? How did we live?!
When it came time to have a presence on the internet, I went through a lot of names. The one I probably had the longest (before Sacheverell) was "Pretzel", a handle I used in a lot of MMOs and FPS games. What made me choose that name? I was probably hungry. Who knows. What mattered was that people knew me by that name, and it became a part of me. Our in-game names are, in a sense, who we are; it's not even what the name implies, or where it came from, but the association we bring with it. When someone sees our in-game name, they immediately think of us, the person - what we're like, whether we're friends or not, games we play together, all that good stuff. The nature of an in-game name isn't exactly rocket science, but there is one part of it that fascinates me to no end: the origin of a name.
WHO WE ARE TODAY, AND WHY
I would never ask of you anything I wouldn't do myself, so let's start with the origin of my in-game name, "Sacheverell". In short, it came from a love for tabletop games. Without getting into all the boring details, it was the name of an entity in a particular game that I thought sounded neat, had a neat theme, and it was fun to say aloud, besides. In my voice-acting work, it was handy to have a name that resonated in a catchphrase, and it serves that purpose well. If I had to name one regret over it though, it would be how much trouble people seem to have with it, both in spelling and spoken aloud: I've seen Sacherevell, Sachaverall, Suchaverel, and countless other variations. Out loud, it gets even sillier. A wise man once told me that I should've picked an easier name, and in many ways, he was right. If I had stuck with something simpler - say, Pretzel - there would be a lot less confusion. To be fair, I've seen a lot of people mistakenly call him "criticsquid", which seems to bother me a lot more than it bothers him. Though, the idea of replacing a citrus-based descriptor with the image of a film critic still makes me giggle a little.
WHO ARE YOU, AND WHY
Forget me for a minute, let's talk about you! What made you choose your in-game name? Is there a cool back-story, with some deeper personal meaning? Did you take it off a cereal box? Smash the keyboard with a hammer? No story is too awesome or silly! Let's hear about your in-game name!
No more than one or two years ago, I was looking for a new username for a website. Because, at the time, I had taken interest in code breaking and encryption algorithms, I decided to pick something which reflected that, and thus began trying to find some interesting looking username with some sort of code behind it. After many unsuccessful or unappealing attempts, I was starting to grow a bit weary of looking for usernames. Suddenly, however, an idea occurred to me, and sure enough, not only did the result look good, but it was available, and had a pretty simple yet satisfying ring to it. Eventually, when I stumbled upon this game, this name immediately came to mind, and I decided to use it.
?.$. .
Qysr actually isn't the first one that I considered. You wouldn't believe the number of usernames I've had in the past. Some of them might have been quite silly in retrospect, admittedly, but picking acronyms has always been an important matter to me, and I wanted to use something unique. Relatively speaking, however, I think this one is fairly appealing and interesting, not to mention unique and well suited to my online persona...
.
Many of the usernames I have used in the past were also quite good. Every once in a while, I'd encounter someone with something similar, but still, most of them were fairly unique. Argent, Cryptiic and Qysr however would be my best ones. Not that the others were bad, but they were a bit lacking in either simplicity or appeal. Some of them were simply downright ridiculous.
.
Considering the nature of this thread, I probably went a bit overboard with my explanation, my apologies. +.+.

Hiding secret messages in my posts? Me? Whatever would make you think that?
I started online gaming when my oldest brother showed me runescape. it was a lot of fun if you had patience. I played it for years.
my name forged from this game after all. At first my name was Elonde which I used in a Pen and paper game my oldest brother made.
So then I used that in Runescape. then well as new as I was to gaming and being on the computer and such. Fresh new, I was scammed in to giving out my password. Dumb real stupid although I was at a much young age then and did not understand much.
So then I started a new name which actually made sense and was also silly. it was Nightimekid which was hacked actually so I got Nightimekid0
as I played my passwords got much more compicated. My normal password is usually 25 characters long now and not in any wordings at all but patterns on the keyboard.
as I used Nightimekid0 for a while, I had to make a new email for Aol for whatever reason (aol sucks I know) because they redid things and I had to make a new email. my brother suggested blackeyedgamer. That sounded pretty cool. I liked it. I have stuck with it ever since.
Plus it makes a lot of sense. I stay up so much my eyes get dark from gaming so much.
So that is how blackeyedgamer was born!
and it shall be the name I use for most things. others i use nightimekid or nightimekid0 such as skype. or photobucket.
thanks for reading and have happy holidays
3 names I always use on games are
RoboticPatriot (current) I recently finished Bioshock Infinite and I was pulled into it. I made this name in honor of the great mechanical George Washington.
Mars (for most older games) My interest of space made me chose this, and it stuck nicely
Flotsam (it's floating around in some games somewhere) I read something in class that was about trash in the ocean called jetsam or flotsam. It sounded catchy.
Well, I come by Derpzie. I love the 'Derp' meme, but my name needed more originality. 'Derpzy' was dumb, so I changed 'y' to 'ie' because everyone knows that's cooler. Right?
That's besides the point. The name has been shot in multiple occasions (Derpzie is a name of a brony, and I'm an antibrony)
I've currently gone by DamoDamo, Grampa' Heavy and currently it's Dr. Derpzie Fenhigglestien.
Ever since i was little, i always want to be the best.ALWAYS.Each time i dont i just run feom whatever the situation is.Ever since last 2 years i played alone.Singleplayer all day, everyday.you could probably tell i didnt have a lot of friends then.moving schools 2 times doesnt help much either. So one of my "friends" kept on talking on and on ad on about playing on servers. That time i didnt know anything on multiplayer.so that time my name was only well, my real life name.So i thought about creating a username.i googled things that souned cool and what it actually meant. Until oneday i was searching for a top 10 list of pokemon.Arceus is always number 1. The more i read about it i knew it was the strongest ,the "god" pokemon.so was only Arceus for a while on servers.Until i had some troubled times.going through them was hard.i thought to myself maybe im just THAT strong to be able to go on in life.so
came up with Alpha. The first,The strongest. After playing on many servers alot of people know me.A lot. Everytime i see people i dont even know they just go HEY its alpha!Things sound right from then on.im at the peak of mt.Happiness.Now,well...I dont know what happens after this.
Anyways, I finally got a premium MC account, and I wanted to play so badly that I just randomly made my username because i thought it was cool. DONT ASK. So that, my friends, is how I came to be named Diamond_miner000.
(this was in grade 4, okay?!?!)
Whether or not I'm going to keep my name I'm not sure. As I'm getting into archery, and really enjoy it, I was thinking that if I'm going to change my nickname, it would be to something with "Archer" in it. But it's my guess that I'm gonna stay with bilde2910 a little longer
EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot.
The '12' is partly because names without numbers are usually taken, and partly because it's my favourite number. THAT is partly because it's the first number that's divisible by 1, 2, 3 and 4, and partly because it's so common (12 hours on a clock, 12 months in a year etc. [which is because it's so divisible]).
a book? what's that? A book is what we had before internet. Books have a very user-friendly interface, and you can always go back to where you left off, or even re-read things! Books recharge instantly, and can be used to prop up a wobbly table or couch when you are done with them. My favorite feature about a book, they become nifty gifts around the holidays, and in some cases, a good self-defense weapon (I have a hardcover version of War and Peace that could knock out a pro wrestler).
I have always been Ordinaryman, since 1992 when I first connected to the internet. There have been many Ordinaryman wannabe's, but they can never stand up to the scrutiny of the original.
