World of Warcraft launched the "Mists of Pandaria" expansion today - of course, many of us here will still be playing Minecraft! Still, what if we could combine the two somehow? Maybe have some Pandaria in our Minecraft game?
We're not talking a mod - we're talking a build contest! A build contest with a free XBOX 360 on the line, plus some really sweet 3D printouts, courtesy of Shapeways! Want to know more? Want to get your hands on a free gaming console? Maybe some other sweet prizes to go with it? Let's talk contests!
The Contest will run from September 25th - Midnight PST, October 25th and is open to everyone (details below).
How To Enter: Create a structure in Minecraft related to 'Mists of Pandaria', export the model with 3D build exporting tool "MineWays", and upload to Shapeways, with the tag "Curse-Contest_MoP"; this way, everyone will be able to see your awesome design, and the Shapeways guys will be able to judge your entry effectively!
Be sure to include the tag, it is very important!
Prizes: Grand Prize winner will receive a $300 Shapeways gift certificate, and an XBOX 360. The grand prize winner will be picked by none other than the silver voicemin of the Minecraft Forum himself, lead editor Sacheverell!
3 runners up will be selected by Shapeways; models or builds with the most 'favorites' on Shapeways with the tag "Curse-Contest_MoP". Each runner up will receive a $100 Shapeways gift certificate, so they can 3D Print their Minecraft creations!

Dont worry, I and my friends@thevoxelbox might enter at least two submission.
And yeah, Eric is awesome! Glad to know him from this contest.
And if you want a General Discussions forum, you would go to a forum specifically for General Discussions? If you want General Gaming, you would go to a forum specifically for General Gaming? How about "Science, Computers & Technology"? "Forum Games"? Are you saying Minecraftforum.net should take out those sections because this site is about Minecraft?
/cough
If the owners of Minecraftforums.net want to hold a contest that YOU are not interested in, then they have the right to. It is their site. If you don't like WoW, General Discussions, about other games, etc, etc, etc, don't go into those sections or posts... Common sense lacking?
So if one day Minecraftforum.net wanted to host a contest for players to build a world themed after a Christmas wonderland or Cybertron or Ghostbusters or random-holiday or random-game-world-of-your-choice, you would be against this?
So what if Minecraft isn't WoW? No one is saying it is, but people whom are interested is taking this up as a challenge to build a Minecraft world based on WoW.
What is the purpose of Minecraft? BUILD a world using blocks. So you're saying you're against Minecraft players who want to build things based on a theme?
Seriously, you take your time to go into a news post to give an opinion on something that has NOTHING to do with you. It's like walking into a Ford dealership, just to tell the sales people: "I hate Ford. That's all. Bye."
o_O
There is something called: "CHOICE". I CHOOSE to play Minecraft, like the other 76 games I have installed on my PC. I CHOSE to build a Coruscant-like world. If you don't want to, then don't! Did the people at Curse take a gun to your head and forced you to join the WoW-themed Minecraft contest? Did they kidnap your mother and demand you build Orgrimmar in blocks?
I just don't get people like you. If you hate something so much, but take the time to go into the thing you hate so much to post up an opinion that you hate it so much, I seriously question your mental state.
Yes, I created an account just to shake the crap out of your 'logic'.

As for the WoW Minecraft contest, I think it's great. I've been playing on and off since vanilla WoW and playing MoP. I won't enter the contest, as I have no time nor patience for that, but good luck to everyone! I saw Speech500's building and it looks fabulous!
I think people who 'hate' WoW have some serious life issues. It's like saying you hate television because you consciously chose to turn it on, to watch things on tv.... So you hate WoW because you could not control your habits and let it take over your life? You hate WoW because you think Pandas are silly? No more silly than talking Cows and Magic casting Undead or an entire world made of blocks filled with Endermen and Pigmen or an Italian guy in a red and blue suit that jumps on the heads of turtles shooting fireballs out of his hand.
I've been using Curse since the Big Bang. Great free service. Can't complain. If Curse wants to do something fun, great. Go for it!
You sir, deserve an award! Thank you for your rational input! Everyone should think like you!
If all that's getting in your way is not knowing how to use Mineways, I'm happy to export the model for you (or anyone else having problems). Either upload your world to planetminecraft.com and let me know, or just email me direct ([email protected]).
Checking today, there are some pretty stunning entries so far, find them all (and vote on them) here.
AFAIK, yes - just one person enters the contest with the group's entry.
It's not "what they used to do", it's the biggest thing they do right now. It doesn't matter that you don't care about WoW, Curse does, along with 10million+ people.
Version 2.19 is up for the PC, and a Mac version should follow soon. Main fix is that the terrain.png in the previous release had some bad data, which I should have checked more carefully. Many little improvements and texture cleanups are in this new version, which should particularly help people using Mineways for rendering. I also added the Anvil block (from the weekly releases).
Full rundown: Added anvil. Fixed terrain.png to avoid rendering errors. Fixed crash on solid color export for rendering, and proper export for 3D printing. Added fire tile for 3D printing. Added path information to .OBJ header. Fixed texturing and placement errors for doors, cauldrons, and cocoa. Fixed texture clamping for furnaces, bed, and cauldron. Added color expansion (bleeding a decal's texture colors outward into the transparent parts) to improve rendering quality on various renderers. G3D/SAP export also now performs further color expansion. Improved error messages for Mac version - I still don't know how to detect Mac paths using MFC and WINE; advice appreciated. Added beta's stair "trimming" rules (where stairs at right angles will trim away part of the upper step), but this feature will not be enabled until 1.4 is released.
Me, this weekend I showed Mineways off at a local Mini Maker Faire - kids loved it, the booth was always busy. More pictures here.
I also have a problem with the way the 3 "runners-up" are going to be judged, it seems a contestant has created multiple accounts just to favorite their own project. I don't have proof, but its pretty obvious.
I hope that issue gets fixed...
Thanks for pointing this out - looks like the new deadline is November 25. I have no idea why that happened (and why it was not announced on this forum thread), and I'll be surprised if there are many more entries because of it.
The popularity vote is a bit odd, I think they're trying to get some word-of-mouth going. It even says in the rules "Get your friends to favorite your model on Shapeways.com" so they're actually encouraging favoritism.
I did notice an amusing typo in the rules: For a copy of the winners list or the Official Rules, send a stamped, self-addressed, business-size envelope to Sponsor’s address below, Attention, MISTS OF PANDARIA IN MINECRAFT by no later than January 30, 2012.
Hmmm, missed that deadline.
There is no November 31, ipso facto the deadline doesn't exist, unless it would be December 1.
Sucks that they haven't picked the winners yet. It took quite some time to finish my creation.
