a system and method ... for preventing unauthorized access to electronic data stored on an electronic device.
It is not known at this time what, if anything, this means for Mojang. Of note, Markus "Notch" Persson has certainly voiced his opinion on the matter, stating that he "will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent". Little else is known about the lawsuit at this time.
Notch has made the lawsuit PDF available for viewing, which you can see by clicking here. He has also posted a detailed write-up on his perspective on software patents - you can view it by clicking here.
Uniloc appears to be suing numerous other gaming producers allegedly violating this patent, including Square Enix, Electronic Arts and others.
Any further specifics of the case will be covered as they develop.
UPDATE: Ric Richardson has posted his views on the situation as well, which you can read by clicking here. It is important to note that Mr. Richardson has had no direct part in the lawsuit of Uniloc vs. Mojang.

I'll note that Microsoft had a reason to settle that goes beyond any loss they may have temporarily taken by "losing" against a company like this. While back in the 1970's and 1980's Bill Gates was on record against software patents and Microsoft for many years didn't have any, they quickly went to "the dark side" and now has more patents than anybody besides IBM and perhaps AT&T. A win here by Uniloc could ultimately be beneficial for Microsoft as well, particularly for overly broad patents that are seen in favorable light by courts.
I certainly wouldn't use any lawsuit against Microsoft as an indication of precedence or how a a court may react as opposed to a group of companies who are active in fighting this lawsuit that want to stomp on even the very idea of a software patent and grind it into dust.
Until I read this:
Oh. Another crazy guy suing out of greed I guess. More power to Mojang then, don't let this scumbag get what he (probably) doesn't deserve.
Contact EA and team up on these faggotsAlso Guys don't forget Notch has AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND FANBASE to back him up.
I'm not worried.
But he has plenty of followers, and one person in the community could very well be a lawyer and figure out counter arguments for Mojang.
They're suing several companies for the same thing, when some of them didn't do anything wrong, AKA, abuse of process.
Nobody can afford to fight Square Enix, Electronic Arts, Mojang, and a whole lot of others at the same time. Especially when they get countersued under rightful claims. They won't get a cent out of Mojang, EA, or Square Enix and they're likely to go out of business.
Also, the expired patent issue is invalid because they reapplied.
That's a little harsh.
Sue-able.
They successfully sued MICROSOFT?!? Oh yeah, the password protection on the user login screen. Jees...
Keep in mind i'm not lawyer and this is a guys opinion.
4. Mojang AB (“Mojang”) is organized and exists under the laws of Sweden with its
principal place of business in Stockholm, Sweden. Upon information and belief, Mojang does
business in the State of Texas and in the Eastern District of Texas.
AND BELIEF. We will have to hear from mojang, but it's a little suspicious that they do buisness in the same state as UNILOC USAs base..
11. The ’067 patent is valid, enforceable and was duly issued in full compliance with
Title 35 of the United States Code.
Forgive me but Minecraft and Minecraft PE were both created in Sweden, Yes? Granted it was posted on Android market and perhaps they agreed to something.
12. Mojang is directly infringing one or more claims of the ’067 patent in this judicial
district and elsewhere in Texas, including at least claim 107, without the consent or authorization
of Uniloc, by or through making, using, offering for sale, selling and/or importing Android based
applications for use on cellular phones and/or tablet devices that require communication with a
server to perform a license check to prevent the unauthorized use of said application, including,
but not limited to, Mindcraft.
- What is the legal issue with requiring server use? Exactly how legal is it to use the application unauthorized? Also, Mindcraft? Really?
13. Uniloc has been damaged as a result of Defendant’s infringing conduct described
in this Count. Defendant is, thus, liable to Uniloc in an amount that adequately compensates it
for Defendant’s infringements, which, by law, cannot be less than a reasonable royalty, together
with interest and costs as fixed by this Court under 35 U.S.C. § 284.
Prayer for Relief

e. That Uniloc be granted such other and further relief as the Court may deem just
and proper under the circumstances.
What in the **** do you need releif from? How has the inability to break into THEIR app made your life worse?
