Every one of us picked our Minecraft user name when we signed up on minecraft.net for the first time (and every time thereafter). For most of us, knowing that whatever name was chosen is stuck with us forever is just a part of the game. Still, what if you gave yourself a silly or inappropriate name? What if you're just tired of the one you have? Currently, this means getting another copy of the game - but maybe not for long.
Jeb hinted that username changes might be a feature in the near future, something that Mollstam is looking into currently. While there is no set date - or even a hinted one - for the feature's arrival, it would seem that it's more a matter of "when" than "if" now.
Maybe I can use this opportunity to change my name to "MrFluffykins".

Wiki Skin Overhaul
For years, the Minecraft Wiki has followed the same visual format as many wikis - it's a tried and true look, after all. For one user - namely, Ultradude25, an administrator on the wiki - this just wasn't good enough. Leading the effort to revamp the wiki's appearance, the community has given Minecraft's most popular wiki a complete make-over - head on over and check it out!
Minecraft Wiki will seem quite familiar to forum regulars - keep in mind however, that the visual re-design was done entirely by volunteers! It is, in many ways, another reminder of just how strong the Minecraft community is, and how far it reaches. It's hard to think of another gaming community with such strong dedication, passion and sense of unity. Congratulations to Ultradude25, and everyone who helped him out on this incredibly ambitious project!
You mean editing 3 numbers off a file? That is so much work!
EDIT: That post was kind of rude, I apologize.
I am on a server that has had over 3k users join, and we have an average of about 20 people on.
It can get up to 42 every 2-3 days, but through various times of the day, the amount on fluctuates. We have our regulars, and only 5-10% would probably go for a name change, it would be an hours' worth of work, then done.
The servers with the most people to be honest, are cracked servers that have 300 slots. Then you can take it as punishment, for those who haven't paid for the game, then the ones that wanted a name change(for a non premium account, on a cracked server, really?) can deal with starting over.
Most servers are never that full, and even then, it isn't too hard to edit some player files. It is about as much work as /nick playername playernick
Maybe their should be a limit, maybe only once a year, so that problem will be mainly distinguished.
Or a price, griefers and hackers will be less likely to change their name if it has a price and a clear reason.
If its a big server, then YES.
- Have the old username be a uniqueID, similar to Steam, so that people would see your fancy new username but servers see your uniqueID.
* This would prevent people banned from a server to just change their name and be let back in without notice.
! This would also make multiplayer less friendly. Changing your name would be basically be changing your ID; how online friends see you and think of you to be someone else unless publicly stated and hoping your online friends trust you.
- Maybe set a limit to username changes if the idea above is too complicated to achieve. Once a year or progressively adding more time if they change the username too much (1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months, 1 year, etc.)
* This would also discourage griefers and hackers from just trying to join the same server after they were banned.
- Set up a system to disallow inappropriate names.
* Now that there is the option to change your name, more people are gonna be encouraged to change their name to something innapropriate, but this is not a necessity, server owners and mods will take care of that as needed.
I agree with you 100% but I think they are just gonna put a price on the name change like WoW. Probly like 5 bucks to change your name er something. At least thats what I think they are going to do.
Thank you jeb. Called myself "JudgeGabranth" as a tribute fan base of a villan in FinalFantasy XII. Im more of a Teddy person. I hope this name change in soon. Sence its in discussion its a matter of when. Soo im hoping soon.
It could be also a bad thing cause people trying to be and appear as one of the top comentaters. Knowing people are easily guilable that way. Also griefers.
When you first create an account for Minecraft, you choose your username. This username will also be, by default, your display name. This means that when a player logs onto a server, it will first authenticate them by their username. After their username has been authenticated, it will set the player's display name to:
a. the default one
-or-
b. the one they have changed it to
In addition to this, a new command would be included into the vanilla server, allowing those with OP power to lookup a user's username via their display name. A history of a user's display names would also be kept in a database, for a few months at least.
Another option, to prevent ban evasion, would be to limit how often a player could change their display name. After a player first signs up, they are given the ability to switch to a different display name whenever, if they do not wish to use their username. After this first display name change, then a limit of X amount of weeks is instituted before a player can once again change their name.
You can have a In-Game-Name apart from your username and will cause no difficulties.
I mean with a password cracker, I could take your username and have your account within 24 hours. I feel like having a IGN would be better for security reasons. Since nobody can see what your login name is, they can't hack you.
The wiki looks great! I signed up today to edit a page even. Nice work.
Well i am sure the admins can ip ban or there must be a time limit to change your name lets say one month or a day so you cant change your name freely when ever you want
Agreed very much.
Anyways, if they will find a solution for that, username changing would be AWESOME
Also, I think username changes should be like Steam. You get a log in name which can not be changed, but then you get a display name which you can change to anything. This allows for the server to still keep a ban on your account, but you can still change your visible name to anything. You wouldn't even have to make it unique, but that might be kind of an issue later down the road when there are a quadrillion people named Notch or something. Perhaps blacklist all of the Mojang staff member names from being a display name?
Jeb would think about these things so stop complaing about a great new feature.
