This week's early-release Snapshot is out! The following changes are confirmed:
- Added new world file format called 'Anvil' (256 max height and 4096 block IDs*)
- Multi-player light calculations do no longer cause affected blocks to be transmitted to the clients, instead the clients will recalculate the light on their own
- Villagers will repopulate villages based on how many houses there are available
- Some nights in villages will be worse than others...
- Added a redstone-controlled light source
- Decreased chance for the rare mob drops
- All animals use the new AI system now
*The game can't use the full range of IDs yet because there are still some assumptions that IDs above 256 are items.
NOTE: It is absolutely imperative that players back up their maps before testing the new format, just in case!
Jeb also had the following to say about the new save format:
Quote fromNOTE: This snapshot will convert the maps you load to the new file format. If you want to revert to the old format, you need to replace the 'level.dat' file with the file called 'level.dat_mcr'. The new format will write world regions to files called '*.mca', so your original regions will remain as '*.mcr'.
UPDATE: The client/server files are now 12w07b! If you downloaded the files earlier today, and want the most up-to-date version, download the updated files from the links below:

Espacially the young villagers, it looks like they're playing tag with each other or racing.

Ravines are quite rare. Either you just hate them existing or you got unlucky with your map(s) ^^;
Not everyone likes the same things but judging by this forum response, this update has, overall, been quite popular. Not everything really thrilled me personally, but I can see the benefits of most of it.
To this poster and the others saying things like how the idea of the villagers mating being 'gross' and whatnot, do remember that Minecraft attracts all sorts of people, including LGBT players. I suggest being a bit more aware of how your words make you sound.
Also, keep in mind that the villagers and all the other mobs don't really have genders at all. People are assuming that they're male because they don't have any overtly female characteristics (except for the cows with udders), but that's in their imagination and isn't anything hard-coded in the game (it's also male privilege showing, but that's another can of worms). True, cows have udders, and chickens lay eggs, but they also breed together, so those aren't proof of binary gender in the game. The player's character has been referred to as "Steve", but that's just a name and there's nothing else to suggest that the character is a "he", a "she", a hermaphrodite, trans- or cis-gendered, intersex, or any of the above. And that's okay.
So, my point is that the current breeding system works, and I don't see why it should be a priority for the Mojang team to spend development time on complicating the code so they can placate people who're projecting their real-world prejudices onto the game.
And yes, it's just a game. So chill out.
TL;DR - People having issues with the villagers breeding: Quit it with the gay panic or just pretend one of them's a flat-chested woman, and move on.
