Notch added that it was a "scary move, but I feel strangely confident. I guess we've worked close enough for long enough for me to feel confident about it. He's exactly what Minecraft needs right now. He's a bit more mod friendly than I am, and we need to embrace mods more."
Jeb commented on the situation as well, stating that he wasn't "sure when the idea came up the first time (from Notch), but it has been a few months now. We all knew that Notch was going to work on other things after release, so it kind of seemed natural for me to 'take over'."
Jeb's next step is to work on the mod API for Minecraft, a long-awaited feature for players and modders alike. He had the following to say on the API:
He went on to add that a release for the new API would likely be seen no sooner than March.Quote fromUntil January I will be the only developer on Minecraft, so things will have to be slow initially. But my absolute main priority now is to create a mod API, because there is no way in hell I will be able to add as much content as the whole internet can do. The game needs an API, so end users can obtain the mods without hassle. I'm not going to do it all by myself though. We have a new programmer beginning in January, and we are talking to existing mod API teams, such as Bukkit, Minecraft Forge, and Minecraft Coder Pack.
Notch and Jeb have collaborated on Minecraft development for over a year, and Notch has expressed the utmost confidence in his collaborator's capabilities. You can contact Jeb via e-mail (at [email protected]), or on Twitter.
Jeb was originally hired as Mojang's back-end developer. Over time, Jeb became increasingly involved in the development of Minecraft, and is now responsible for many well-known parts of the game. Having worked on features such as wolves, pistons and map structures (villages, strongholds and nether fortresses), he now takes his vision of Minecraft's future foward as the official head developer of the game. Congratulations, Jeb!
And of course Notch is still the big head honcho in the community and the "spokesperson". He's Notch.
And a message to Mojang:
You made 15 MILLION dollars on Minecraft. Please put some of it to good use and hire a few more programmers.Maybe you could make people send in applications over the forums? I know a lot of mod developers would love to work at Mojang.
He chose to do this, nothing will make him change his mind as he was not requested of this.
Also, while Notch is awesome and created Minecraft, Jeb is still cool. No reason to start a flame war on either guys.
Just to remind you guys of what eash these guys did.
Notch= Made Minecraft, added Ender stuff, added achievements, and new combat stuff.
Jeb= Added wolves, weather, planning to add API, probably more stuff to come. *COUGH Dungeons and Levers*
YAY JEB_

Yes, hopefully he will add more... *COUGH CTF mode* *COUGH Villager AI*
And he'd better add overworld dragons and a sky dimension. :angry.gif:
R.I.P nothing cuase minecraft still is beast
This was a good idea on his part so he can work on other goals he has. Grats Jeb on the promotion and hope to see some more cool stuff from you Notch. As far as Notch not being fully there at the end of minecraft is't because the man has more than just minecraft going on in his head and other projects he is eager to work on.
You DO realize that the two of them worked together, and generally discussed and had to agree on new features BEFORE they went into the game, right?
Chances are, Notch didnt just stick mushroom cows in when Jeb wasnt looking. He would have brought it up and Jeb would have AGREED to it.
The mushroom cows probably took all of an hour to program, if that, and were just added for fun. Really, I wish more game devs did things that way; adding things just for fun every now and then instead of having to be super-serious about every little step.
I'm hoping that the two of them continue to develop in exactly the way they have been, and it sounds like that's going to mostly be the case.
I agree. The guy seems to genuinely enjoy coding, but coding ONLY Minecraft could burn him out a bit. If this gives him a chance to work on other things in stead of JUST Minecraft, the end result is a happier coder/designer, and that means more cool stuff coming from him.
He would of had to agree with it, Notch is the boss and gets the final decisions, Jeb didn't want to add dragons and yet they're in the game.
and now he isn't god!
Witch means...JEB IS GOD!
...I still think notch is god.
