A code freeze for Minecraft is now in effect! In software jargon, a code freeze is essentially a tight set of restrictions placed on what can be added to game code, with a focus on polishing, bug-fixing and streamlining the game instead of adding more features. This assures that Minecraft will be released as a smooth, mostly (or entirely!) bug-free game.
Minecraft has gone through some amazing changes since its humble beginnings, adding tons of features and content. What have been some of your favorite additions to the game?
Doors, ladders, and stairs. I remember when those wee added back in infdev, I was virtually bowing down to Notch. It made it SO much easier to navigate through constructions, and I no longer had to use DIRT for a door. XD
I'm not sure what to think, what with NPC villages basically being abandoned and the "Ender" zone empty except for Ender men and dragons. Me think Notch has spread himself too thin. For sure, there will be continued updates after release, so there's hope this stuff will be finished eventually.
Just give me some better playability. I don't really care about the bugs, I just want higher fps and less lag.
Me too. I think Notch has completely stopped caring about not-high-end machines (and laptops of ANY level) being able to play the game. Right now, for me at least (laptop player obviously), OptiFine is mandatory just to launch the game, not even to have a high enough FPS for CamStudio to be able to record (30-40 or better), but just to get past "Generating World" without Java exploding on me and taking Firefox with it despite not being in the browser version. (Okay, that's a bit of hyperbole, but when Creepers are walking like a Powerpoint presentation, there's something wrong.)
Also, I hope he changes the new dimension's name back to The Ender. I kind of felt the same way when Slip became Nether, and I still insist on calling block 83 "bamboo", but "The End" is more cliche than a TV Tropes reference. "Ender" is something that's completely Minecraft-specific and awesome.
This is for all those people who think there will be no more updates, the Minecraft Wiki Upcoming features states:
Minecraft 1.0[1]
Full version of Minecraft.[2] Updates will continue to be released after it.[3]
More Villager NPC AI applied.[4]
Fixes & Changes:
Will limit the amount of Experience Orbs dropped by a player on death.[5][6]
The ability of Endermen to carry blocks will be reduced in some way.[7]
Guys... settle down... it's still going to be updated after the final release, whether it be through add-ons or just more updates. The point here is that they are halting development until the full release, so as to ensure that it's a clean release. Games are rarely released with more than a handful of minor bugs nowadays.
Anyways, my favorite additions have been the Halloween update (giving us the Nether, Jack-o-Lanterns and some other features), wolves, and player-versus-player support in survival multiplayer. New players take that feature for granted, having not played SMP before PvP!
I'd like to thank the entire Mojang team for their diligent and successful endeavors in community interaction, and for the wonderful and innovative game we have today. Congratulations on the legal victory with Bathesda, and keep up all the great work! Thanks again! :biggrin.gif:
This! I remember the dark days where you were invincible in SMP! Redstone and rails didn't work, and you only got snow or forest and hills. Lol. Man those were the days.
My favorite addition was when Notch added Indev, I spent hours building on my little floating islands. It has been an awesome ride, that is for sure.
EDIT: Almost forgot! Think about it, we got this far with no advertising, think about the masses of people that'll come when we get some TV ads :biggrin.gif:
if Notch could make a new game mode like adventure mode (spawn in a dungeon map or something) that would be awesome and we would have 4 game modes creative, survival, hardcore and adventure

You can't expect a developer to worry about every system configuration. Yes, Minecraft does need to be optimized, which is what should happen in the code freeze, but it can only go so far. To include certain features and additions, Mojang needs to cut support for lower end systems. It's the fact of the world. You wouldn't expect, say, Bethesda, to shorten the features, content, or weaken the engine, just so lower end computers can play. Technology needs to progress, as does software.
I loved it when he wrote that modding API so we could have awesome mods in multiplayer without an act of god. Oh wait...
You do realize not all features that will be in the official release have been revealed right? Considering it'll be released at MineCon, I'm positive there will be a few surprises. The modding api might be one of the big features that hasn't been revealed. And if not, well oh well. It sucks, but might come in a future release.
I'm pretty excited to finally see the full release. It's been so fun to follow Minecraft for so long, to now see it as such a great game.
and the fact that we can have mods for the game
but actul ingame thing i'd say sprinting is nice
the release only celebrates the updates so far... minecraft will be better and with more content and patches in the future
Also, I'm starting to think Enderdragon is the final boss. Forgive me if I'm not the first to make this assumption.

Notch has repeatedly said that hes going to continue to support it. As long as the game is popular of-course.
My favorite addition was biomes. I remeber when i first played.. The best part of minecraft.
