Jeb has released the third 1.9 Pre-Release! You can get the client here, and the server here! Discoveries and discussion can be found here.

So far, the following is known:

Step 1 of potion-brewing is to fill the glass bottles with water.

Discovered:

Enchanting Table
Eye of Ender
Brewing Stand
Cauldron Icon
Crystal Block (will investigate)
Golden Apples' tool-tip appears pink - the apple itself has a shine effect
Baby animals

Edit:

Notch refers to it as the "weird black stuff" - nothing is yet known about it

OH GOD THE NEW GAME MECHANICS HURT MY HEAD AND IT FEELS ****ING AWESOME. Seriously though, the fact that I have no clue what to do with the enchanting table is amazing. It adds real play time if it takes 4 hours to figure out how to craft the thing.

On the Brewing stand use Nether Wart first then you can use the rest of the items to make whatever potion you want to make.

people just dont seem to read before posting i guess... ive already posted starting items to use for brewing potions....

You can make a potion of weakness by placing a fermented spider eye in the brew rack with bottles filled with water
