For those who have been here long enough, you know what this means. Our Minecraft: Java Edition accounts are migrating for a second time. For those who have an account now, we will need to Migrate from a Mojang Account to a Microsoft account in early 2021. Starting later this fall, however, new accounts will already be required to create Microsoft accounts. I know change can be bothersome but Mojang does state some good points when making the switch.
- More account security.
- All Minecraft accounts connected.
- Parents can have more control for the safety of their child/children
- Chat and invitation blocking
In the coming months Mojang will list out what exactly is needed and how to migrate your account, this will be mandatory if you wish to continue playing Minecraft: Java Edition. Here on the Forums, we will do our best to also help remind members of the upcoming switch as well as list the how-to/need-to-know for account Migration. For those who are Migrating Mojang Studios do have a nice added bonus, a cape!
To ensure that the Migration happens smoothly Mojang Studios will be migrating players in batches to hopefully make this an easy process for all. Make sure your emails are up to date for your Mojang account as you will receive instructions when it is time to Migrate.
For those worrying, Java Edition itself is not changing, it is only the account that you use to login that is changing. You will still keep your current names, new players will still be able to pick their name. Your login is just finding a new home.
For now, read over the FAQ Mojang has provided so far: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360050865492-JAVA-Account-Migration-FAQ
I would contact Mojang support. It may take a while for them to respond though since they're busy handling stolen accounts at the moment, but hey better late than never right?
Why do we even have to do this? Its dumb, I dont really see a reason as to why this is happening in the first place.
I wish notch was still the owner, then the game would be better.
Also, do you guys think that bedrock edition is taking over?
read the initial post and the linked mojang press release and it tells you why they are doing it
Better safe than sorry, and words can be taken back.
When a company has your profile for data collection to make targeted ads or sell that info to a third party who might make ads instead etc, you essentially lose your privacy. Perhaps you don't want your internet provider, employer, or people looking at your device or screen to know what ads you receive. Perhaps you prefer not to have it known what your schedule is to strangers, simply because you like to feel that other people can't just turn you into a pattern.
And if you really want to dunk into the 'pessimism and conspiracies' there is the fact that some data can sometimes be used to arrest you if you do are suspected of doing something wrong, and that should make you uncomfortable about giving said data away - you may not be doing anything wrong now, but you don't know what counts as 'wrong' in the future. Maybe one day you will end up breaking a law or breaching a legally grey area, and the only reason it's known to anyone but you is because it was online, and some company collected that information. Why would you tie yourself to that ship?
Well, I doubt that just off hunches, but you never know. Best be expecting the worst so we don't get upset if it does come true.
Handing everything off to big business in general isn't inherently a good idea, regardless of opinions on data and what not.
It's monopolization when small competitors give in to big ones and result in fewer choices. That leads to the big fish basically controlling the market, "you do what we say or you don't use our product, since we stamped out your alternatives". Not ideal.
Once again, better safe than sorry, and better raise concerns now than later. There's been plenty of times where big companies have had issues with data whether it was about them using it or someone stealing it etc. Yes, big companies are more secure from outside threats, yes, they are also bigger threats themselves, you can hide a lot of unethical practices in that 'big' and 'secure'.
That's a non-issue by comparison, but sure, I guess it will bother some people and bruise egos or eyes.
Such is the reality of 'owning' online products. Even your own operating system isn't really yours and thus your own computer isn't yours.
Everyone has a different threshold for when this impeding bothers them, at which particular new rule or change made they decide they've had enough of someone else controlling something they thought they bought and owned.
"If it's online, it's not mine".
will this mean the end of alt shops?
hopefully yes
A wonder what will happen to the Minecraft legacy launcher and older versions of Windows.
I think this will be the end for them.
I strongly believe that Mojang/Microsoft will no longer support Windows versions older than Windows 7 after the account migration unless they update the legacy Launcher one last time.
If thats really the case, im going to drive insane.
My i suggest an Operating system that's superior to windows.
You guested it!
Linux.
The basic deal here is that I, like many other people, do not trust Microsoft. In my case, it's because back when I was a programmer, I saw way too much of their dirty tricks, and I've seen their shenanigans in many venues since.
Microsoft has pretty much always used the same basic method to kill public standards and replace them with their own proprietary versions: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Let's look at how that applies here:
Embrace: First they're friendly and publically adopt the standard. "No worries, Minecraft players, you'll never notice any difference at all!"
Extend: Then they quietly add something to their own version, essentially making sure that non-M$ vendors who actually match the standard somehow will never quite be compatible with the M$ version. "Bedrock version will cover all the non-PC platforms, and oh yeah, there's also a PC version. Of course, it's in C++ so your Java mods won't work nohow... and while both versions have these new datapacks, only Bedrock's version can rewrite mob behavior...."
Extinguish: Once they've established control over the marketplace, they can simply declare that their own version is the new standard. "All Java players will require a M$ account to continue playing. We can terminate your M$ account on any excuse including unsupported reports from the XBox players you trounced." I would not bet on them keeping Java Edition around indefinitely either, and too bad about the Linux players.
And of course having your Microsoft account terminated (say, for being denounced by other players on XBox), will then kill your Minecraft account. Not to mention that you'll get a front-row seat for any future requirements they decide to impose on their accounts.
And this is why i dont trust Microsoft and this is also why people dont want the account migration.
And yes, goodbye Linux players and goodbye Legacy Windows players.
As I know Microsoft they wont care about the Legacy Launcher and therefore Legacy Windows.
The only thing we can do now is watch Minecraft die.
F for Minecraft as we know it right now.
Ngl I personally think this change is very inconvenient. And not just for me, as I started Minecraft this year. This could be a problem to people who, lets say, lost access to the email and such. Also this might slowly take the same turn as Bedrock edition and then bam. Suddenly micro-transactions are introduced. I agree with calm creeper about Microsoft messing everything up. And that effort for a cape?! One that doesn't even look that special in anyway. I bet people would only wear it for the sake of letting others know they have it. Right now, it might not do anything to affect Java, but it could later on. Oh, and did I forget to mention that even though we're now gonna be using Microsoft accounts, they did not even at least add crossplay? I respect that they want better security for Java accounts and such, but I also understand why people would be upset about it.
Lol I feel like I just wrote a complaint to the government or something.
i agree with you
I would genuinely prefer Not to switch to microsoft accounts.
There are *Many* reasons for it, But the basic one, is Convenience.
I like how it is, And see no reason to do it otherwise.
Microsoft accounts will most likely require additional confirmations and such.
And currently? All security breaches don't come from Mojang Accounts being insecure.
They come from their owners being irresponsible with their information and behavior.
There's more, of course. I don't like Microsoft - I do use their Operating system, because it's Genuinely good. . .
But they do many shady, and upsetting things, too.
It doesn't matter if recording/keeping private information on us is Illegal, if there's no real way to verify if they have it or not.
Any reliable way to Verify that, would in and of itself require borderline illegal activities, anyway.
And besides. . . They can always just move where the data is stored, and you no longer have any evidence to prosecute them over.
It is quite difficult to grab an entire server-room full of computers out of an enormous Internet giant.
I like my Privacy, as vestigial as it is. And the idea of Losing the right to a game I had for so many years, is outright shocking.
Why does Microsoft have the right, to decide I cannot play the game i paid for, simply because I do not wish to use their login service?
I see people asking what they could do with a person's information - There's Immense amounts of things they could.
Chinese government, thanks to their tight control over internet traffic and people's private information, Simply "dissapear"
anyone that shows tendencies to disagreeing with their iron-handed grasp on society.
There were many *Confirmed* scandals featuring their inhumane acts upon their own people, which subsequently get hidden under a rug.
Did you forget about Hong Kong? The Tiananmen square incident?
I do not wish Big, money-driven corporations holding similar, if not Exactly the same power over me.
I use VPN's, And I use Incognito. They don't help much, and I know they don't, Since im a qualified Teleinformatics Technician.
But they are what little control I have, and By god, am i going to use as much of it as i can.
Targeted ads make money - And to do that, Someone has to know your data. Win-win, you get something you "want".
Except you wouldn't have gotten it if you weren't prompted by it. Or even maybe the ad found itself into your lap when you felt the need for sweets. . .?
Im not Mad by those ads - But they are a major point to be worried about.
Targeted videos on youtube are also fun - I like watching things I enjoy seeing. But now? now im confined to that very group of interests there.
I'll see, i don't know, all 120 videos by DisguisedToast on AmongUs, and a couple videos About how Cake is or Isn't A Lie in Portal, by Matpat of the Game Theorist channel. I won't see videos documenting Police Brutality. I won't see videos that promote Science and spread Knowledge. And who knows. . . I might not see the videos decrying some new-found reason to 'rise up' against Microsoft?
There is a suprisingly large amount of videos decrying Apple, The big Competitor, and monopoly-partner of Microsoft, as doing some vastly upsetting things, and openly making repairing their products harder. . . But we don't see any on Microsoft.
Last time I had to figure out how to fix something a Windows 10 Update did, It took me 3 days to find Anything on youtube. And I was led to believe Everyone had the same problem as I did.
If you don't have an issue with migrating to Microsoft accounts, You're free to do so. But i don't want to have my right to choose otherwise taken hostage, under the threat of having had paid money for a popular game, enjoyed by so many people, me Included, And no longer having access to it.
It doesn't matter if it's Overblown worry, Scepticism or Optimism. You should consider that this very action made by Microsoft is Very upsetting, from the perspective of Ownership and Your rights.
If I bought a game, I want to have some control over it. and when i buy a game, im led to understand, that I can play it whenever I want, and i Can let my Younger sister, or Grandpa, play it on my computer, on My 'copy'.
I most certainly don't want Microsoft to have the ability to Blackmail me into Voluntarily giving away my Information, no matter how inconsequential it is, by threatening my access to a product I bought, and wish to use. Not even if they give me the Carrot in the form of a Cape. *shudders.*
Who says they can't do the same with something else I 'Own'?
In any case. All hail our Computer Overlords, Microsoft and Apple. All Hail their unwavering Wisdom, and Thank them for their kindness!
There are many Court cases being run across the world, Exactly because of the reasons i gave here.
You are threatened by Internet Hackers, whenever you're connected to the internet. Mojang and Microsoft just needs to make sure the passwords to their servers are very complicated. YOU, need to be carefull of what you do, regularly check your computer for viruses, and Pray to all god some Hacker doesn't decide they want to explicitly make your day a living nightmare.
Lost accounts come not from Mojang, Or microsoft. They come from people not watching out, Giving out their own information Voluntarily, or by downloading a Key-logger virus, simply by being Tricked to do so, or by clicking on an ad. . . That was Targeted at them. . . By Google. . .
Last bit is more of a joke, but hey, Knock yourself out, with just throwing out my Massive wall of text as a baseless worry over microsoft's lordship over our data. Afterall. I Can't Possibly be in Any way right, And there simply cannot be a Single grain of truth to my words. Im against Microsoft, Aren't I? that means im Wrong.
[Edit - Corrected Some words]
