For those who have been here long enough, you know what this means. Our Minecraft: Java Edition accounts are migrating for a second time. For those who have an account now, we will need to Migrate from a Mojang Account to a Microsoft account in early 2021. Starting later this fall, however, new accounts will already be required to create Microsoft accounts. I know change can be bothersome but Mojang does state some good points when making the switch.
- More account security.
- All Minecraft accounts connected.
- Parents can have more control for the safety of their child/children
- Chat and invitation blocking
In the coming months Mojang will list out what exactly is needed and how to migrate your account, this will be mandatory if you wish to continue playing Minecraft: Java Edition. Here on the Forums, we will do our best to also help remind members of the upcoming switch as well as list the how-to/need-to-know for account Migration. For those who are Migrating Mojang Studios do have a nice added bonus, a cape!
To ensure that the Migration happens smoothly Mojang Studios will be migrating players in batches to hopefully make this an easy process for all. Make sure your emails are up to date for your Mojang account as you will receive instructions when it is time to Migrate.
For those worrying, Java Edition itself is not changing, it is only the account that you use to login that is changing. You will still keep your current names, new players will still be able to pick their name. Your login is just finding a new home.
For now, read over the FAQ Mojang has provided so far: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360050865492-JAVA-Account-Migration-FAQ
If Mojang keep the account token system they use now the same then the server software won't see any change and thus your player stats on a server won't be affected.
I doubt they will change that part, just the login side, so hopefully you'll be ok
Hopefully, I've spent countless hours on the servers I'm part of. Just worried that this may turn that into pointless hours, that's all that bugs me about this migration, the possible risk
What about mac/linux users? The infrastructure that microsoft/xbox uses simply doesn't exist outside windows.
they are changing the login method not the whole game, there is 0 reason why a login method e.g. typing in an email and password wouldn't work on a different os.
also you can get ms office for mac, i bet the login used there is the same or using the same background as the login they will be using for minecraft
Yes, it does. Microsoft servers are accessible via any computer that has an internet connection, regardless of OS.
I do not have a Microsoft Account and I also do not want to create one / Have it forcibly linked to my Windows just because of Minecraft.
Way to go to force me from playing a game I payed money for.
I really don't understand why people are so against making a Microsoft account. It only take like 5 minutes to set up.
Will we still be able to use the older Minecraft launcher that uses java 7 to be able to sign in to play older modpacks that only work with java 7?
Some people (including me) do not like newer releases of Windows and would like to stay on their current version regardless of the possible "security risks" that Microsoft is telling us about.
people just dont want to give out their data to microsoft for privacy reasons.
And another reason is that the legacy launcher (wich some people are still using) may not work after migrating to a Microsoft account, wich also means that playing Minecraft legally on some older operating systems like Windows XP will be impossible.
Microsoft is trying to eliminate any legacy software (Legacy launcher / Legacy Minecraft accounts / Legacy operating systems)
and thats why some people are mad about Microsoft.
Some people just WANT to stay on their current account type and do not want to change/switch.
What information would you even give to Microsoft? I don't understand this argument. Please explain.
Lol why are you so insistent on defending this change? They track your use of their other products and services and link it to you through your Microsoft account so they can use it for targeted advertising and product recommendations. They will likely use Minecraft in the same way once people migrate their accounts. People don't need any more of a reason than that to not want to use a Microsoft account.
Again why is this bad? So they're going to know that you play Minecraft, then what? They advertise games like Minecraft? I really don't understand why people are so negative about this.
Edit: I decided to do a quick search on Google because I could've sworn remembering Google uses targeted advertising and I was right. Google collects your data and then uses it to promote things you might be interested in. Please explain to me why this is a bad thing. I really don't understand this "data stealing" argument.
Also if you're wonder why I'm "defending" this change, why not? So far I see nothing wrong with this change. I feel like people are overreacting about the migration and I've seen some horrible comments attacking other people who either support this change or don't agree with what they think. It reminds me of why I left this community a few years back, community members are attacking other community members and I can't stand it.
To be fair, I think Google's data collection is much worse than anything a brand new Microsoft account records. If it's not connected to anything else, I don't think it leaks that much information. (I could be wrong though.)
Google, on the other hand, knows your search history, your location and other things. With state-of-the-art algorithms and unbelievable amounts of statistical data, the information collected about you can be used to serve you extremely targeted ads. You see products that you want, so it's win-win? If it was only about you seeing other interesting games, the only problem here would be other people being uncomfortable with any single entity knowing so much about them. A valid concern, but if you feel you've got nothing to hide, you need something more.
So, here we go:
- Political ads designed to affect your target demographic.
- A more serious version of that: targeted misinformation that people with your interests are the most likely to believe
- Search results that drive you towards political the political extreme of your side
- Detecting your mood to give you product recommendations that you're most likely to buy at that precise moment, possibly exploiting vulnerable moments
- And the worst of all: there's no guarantee that all that data will only be used for ads. For example, limiting your access to services based on your political opinions is already possible. The big tech companies just know it's better business not to do so, for now.
My biggest concern is being able to play older versions, and using an older launcher. the specific forge I am using for 1.6.4 does not work with java 8, and therefor I cannot use the new launcher.
Will we still be able to sign in using the legacy launcher?
You can specify the version of Java the game uses in the profile settings (click on "more options" and you'll see an option for the Java executable). Note that it is very strongly recommended to always run separate versions in separate profiles and game directories (this will also prevent settings from being reset as well as errors, crashes, and corrupted worlds from being opened in the wrong version. You can even run multiple modded instances in separate directories, each with its own "mods" folder) so this will not conflict with newer versions (1.12+ will not work with Java 7). Also, the latest version of Forge for 1.6.4 was patched for Java 8 (according to the creator themselves, if you really need an older version because a mod is incompatible there is a "LegacyJavaFixer" mod (see second link), not sure about a download but many 1.6-1.7 modpacks still include it).
I'm fairly certain the old launcher will stop working once this change goes through, as it hasn't been updated in years. Unless Forge or Mojang decide to support Forge 1.6.4, it's unlikely that'll change.
Hey I would like to thank you for all the info and help, it means a lot. I hope they still do allow use of the legacy launcher, but if not, I have that as a backup. Thank you so much.
This is Mojang basically raising their hands into the corporate giant Microsoft and giving up what little control they have over the development of the game. There can be nothing good that can come out of this. If you're calm or even happy with this migration, you should really look deep into the implication of this.
I'm seriously disappointed that some of the community actually took optimism towards this. The cape is just a part of the scheme to distract the community.
Will this event be the thing that triggered Minecraft demise? Probably not, but it is another step that Microsoft has taken in order to control Minecraft more. Transforming Minecraft from what it should be to an husk stuffed with microtransactions and shady corporate decisions. Microsoft may meddle with Bedrock edition, but they should never meddle with the Java edition of the game
Go look up Microsoft's "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy.
To be fair I think Embrace / Extend / Extinguish refers to eliminating competitors' products... I doubt they're going to "extinguish" Minecraft as long as it's popular and they can keep milking the franchise for money. Unless you mean that they're going to try and marginalise Java to encourage people to switch over to Bedrock, but even then I think Java will be around for quite a while seeing as it's basically the definitive version of the game for PC.
Wouldn't be surprised if they start rebranding content updates as paid "expansions" in the near future, though.
