For those who have been here long enough, you know what this means. Our Minecraft: Java Edition accounts are migrating for a second time. For those who have an account now, we will need to Migrate from a Mojang Account to a Microsoft account in early 2021. Starting later this fall, however, new accounts will already be required to create Microsoft accounts. I know change can be bothersome but Mojang does state some good points when making the switch.
- More account security.
- All Minecraft accounts connected.
- Parents can have more control for the safety of their child/children
- Chat and invitation blocking
In the coming months Mojang will list out what exactly is needed and how to migrate your account, this will be mandatory if you wish to continue playing Minecraft: Java Edition. Here on the Forums, we will do our best to also help remind members of the upcoming switch as well as list the how-to/need-to-know for account Migration. For those who are Migrating Mojang Studios do have a nice added bonus, a cape!
To ensure that the Migration happens smoothly Mojang Studios will be migrating players in batches to hopefully make this an easy process for all. Make sure your emails are up to date for your Mojang account as you will receive instructions when it is time to Migrate.
For those worrying, Java Edition itself is not changing, it is only the account that you use to login that is changing. You will still keep your current names, new players will still be able to pick their name. Your login is just finding a new home.
For now, read over the FAQ Mojang has provided so far: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360050865492-JAVA-Account-Migration-FAQ
I'm pretty sure they will still be free. They said nothing else would change, they're just migrating the accounts.
As long is not painful to do so then ok, I'll be fine with it. Painful migration is the last thing I would want.
Well, it was a good time. Unless Mojang and Microsoft willingly give this up, this looks like the end of the renaissance.
If Mojang and MS didn't kill Java before the renaissance then what makes you think they are going to kill off Java now? Ask yourself this, why would MS go through these processes(Getting people to use the MS account) just to phase out Java? It literally makes zero sense, it would be easier and less time-consuming for them to come in and say "Guys, no more Java edition!". It's just not a normal behavior for a company that wants to phase out a product. If MS really wants to phase out Java then they would just do it, I doub't they would waste their time going through the process that I already mentioned.
Kinda feels like people just like to hate on MS and use them as a scapegoat.
Even if that isn't Microsoft's intent, another decline would probably be the result of pushing this on Java Edition players.
What's this "decline" that everybody is talking about? You mean the supposed "decline" that followed Microsoft's acquisition of Mojang back in 2014? Certainly not evident in player counts or sales, which have increased for the better part of a decade, if not since the game came out, especially player counts. You mean Google Trends? Not even close to a reliable source, as if it was correct it would still be far less popular right now than it was in 2013 - while player counts are around 10 times higher - likewise, the number of YouTube videos has little bearing on the number of players (and might even reduce play time if they spend more of their free time watching than playing; granted, I found Minecraft through YouTube but it has likely become less important as the game has become mainstream):
https://www.theverge.com/2016/6/2/11838036/minecraft-sales-100-million ("Microsoft's video games revenue has been climbing steadily since the Minecraft acquisition, and it increased by $367 million in the 2015 financial year "mainly due to sales of Minecraft.")
https://www.statista.com/statistics/680139/minecraft-active-players-worldwide/ (note that 2019 was skipped; recent growth is not much different from 2016-2018, the "dark days" according to some)
Of course, this is for all editions of Minecraft, of which Java is a tiny minority at this point, and has been since 2012 (the rise of other editions hasn't really hurt it though, but it hasn't seen their exponential growth):
https://www.gamesbrief.com/2013/01/minecraft-grosses-over-250-million-in-2012-but-which-platform-dominated/ (PC/Java was only 16% of end of the year sales, 28% for the entire year, despite Pocket Edition (now Bedrock) being in its infancy and only one console)
The only issue I have is that I'll have to make yet another account for a site/service which I never use, much like how I had to make a Twitch account to keep using these forums, which I've never touched for any other reason. Even the cape offer is useless since I play on an older version which can no longer access the skin server so I'll never be able to see it (I just replaced the default skin with my own, and even disabled the skin download code to prevent wasteful attempts at connecting).
Finally someone who isn't pessimistic or a conspiracy theorist. Mojang claimed that they wouldn't change the game, just the way you log in. Personally I feel neutral about making a new account for Microsoft, it's not even that hard and it barely takes any time.
were concerned because we don't want our private info stolen
im afraid microtransactions will be next
No. People really need to stop panicking over this migration.
notch help us
So, to be perfectly clear, will there still be a java version with all it's servers and combat mechanics or will there only be bedrock?
I really prefer the combat in java edition.
The accounts are just migrating to MS account, everything else stays the same.
Mojang claimed that the game will stay the same, all they're changing is the way you log in. People really need to stop blowing this migration thing out of proportion.
if I dont remember my email password to log in to my email to do the migration
am I screwed?
Contact Mojang and they can get you going, just explain the issue you have and they will work with you to verify account ownership
Will it be necessary to migrate?
Yes, you won't be able to log in to play Minecraft otherwise.
If you want to keep playing on Java Edition it is absolutely necessary. But remember, there is no real time limit. Some people claim that they will have to make a Microsoft account before 2021 or that they will lose their account if they don't migrate by 2021, this is not true. I wouldn't believe most of the posts in this comment section or most posts about the migration.
I see it the same way.
