Please note: this announcement is no longer applicable, please refer to the updated announcement: https://www.minecraftforum.net/news/60728-a-new-and-exciting-beginning
As follows is the original announcement:
Today we are announcing that we have made the difficult decision to transition the Minecraft Forum from an active website to a read-only archive. This decision has been made after careful consideration about how we can best serve the Minecraft community with the resources we have available. A read-only archive of the website will ensure that the valuable content contributed over many years is safe-guarded, remaining available for visitors to explore.
From everyone at the Minecraft Forum we are deeply grateful for our communities contributions to the forum over the last decade, big and small. Millions of members have shared tens of millions of posts that have been viewed billions of times, and everyone contributed something to make this forum great. Minecraft Mod creators helped expand the world of Minecraft, support volunteers worked tirelessly to provide access to that world and everyone together turned that world into a community.
Read only mode will be enabled on June 16th, 2019. From this date you will no longer be able to login to the Minecraft Forum and no new content will be created, however all links to the Minecraft Forum will continue to work as-is, all content will remain accessible. This change does not impact the Minecraft Wiki. The Minecraft Wiki will continue as an active website, we have no plans to archive the Minecraft Wiki.
We appreciate that this is a big change and that there will be many questions. I am available in the comments of this news post to answer any questions you may have, and you are welcome to reach out via Private Message if you have any questions you would like to ask privately.
Please use the comments as an opportunity to share your story about what this community has meant to you. We would love to hear about how the forum has impacted you, whether it inspired a passion for creating, helped build friendships or simply provided you somewhere to share your love of the game -- any thoughts you may have are welcome.

Did I ever say anything about stopping them bro? Just chill your tattas and let them make a buck or two in these last weeks.
for now, we have to say, regardlessly, now PMC is our best friend for now.
RIP minecraft forum.
Even though they did sellout to Curse, it was still a great place to go for looking and posting things about Minecraft. (I honestly don’t want to switch to PMC just due to it ain’t nearly as much of a “forum”, but rather is a collection of just different things.) I will probably just drop off the face the forums now that this is achieving.
Had a great decade, may we try to have another great one!
These forums are full of nostalgia for me, it's been great fun. I'm glad it's being archived instead of deleted, but I'm still sad that the kind of community the forums generated won't be quite possible anywhere else. Still, I haven't been active on here for ages so it's no personal loss.
If anyone from the future is reading this, hello! Also, goodbye!
This hit me a lot harder than I expected...
I lost access to my original account many years ago, long before all this Twitch and Curse stuff, but once I read about this I just had to create a new account to say goodbye. I may not have posted much, but the modders, mappers, texturers and players here were a major part of why I am still enjoying Minecraft all these years later, even if I don't have nearly the amount of time that I used to. I will certainly be here on the 16th for a final goodbye to a major part of my teen years, and some of the best days of my life.
Diamonds to you minecraftforum.net!
I will miss you...
It's so sad to see this website go. I was never an active member on the Minecraft Forums but I did use this place often back in the day. Every question/answer led me to this website, almost every mod led me to this website, and I even posted my public servers on this website (they never took off btw haha). Watching the past fade away like this is heartbreaking to me because I know this website meant a lot to the Minecraft community. I know we have Discord, Reddit, Planet Minecraft, and other places, but Minecraft Forums was special in its own right. Anyways, It's very sad to see this place go, but if we keep playing Minecraft, then the community itself will never die out. If you are reading this, you are awesome and you should treasure whatever memory you have of this place, even if you visited this place a few times. Alright, I'm done, sorry for the long message. It's just sad seeing my childhood fade away. Again this community is awesome and so is Minecraft, thank you and goodbye!

After years playing this game, and after all time, I am not tired yet, this is my worst tuesday may 21st of my life... the worst news to all minecraft players, you have a good reason, you try with all this people to join in this community, and you don't have idea what I'm happy to be in this, our creations, our problems and bugs, and suggestions and questions is a part of my friends and other people unknowns...
After 10 years... 10 years omg... I wanna say...
Good Bye... Thanks for making me happy... Minecraft Forum :')
I wish you luck on whatever future brings you, and I'm sad that the only real centralized resource for everything minecraft is going to be closing in a month. As many others have mentioned, nothing out there is a replacement for this forum.
So, any news on the reason why this is happening?
$$$$$$
They can't exploit the posters, contributors etc. here and make a profit out of them.
I'm also wondering if Java Minecraft will be shut down sometime in the next few months, so they want to remove the main conduit for protest before that happens. I don't really have any evidence to support that possibility, just a bad feeling about the way corporations usually behave.
The development of minecraft is not linked to this forum in ANY way, this forum is not affiliated with Mojang, the closure of this forum is the decision of Fandom NOT Mojang
My guess is that, since the forums were sold to not-Curse but are hosted using Curse's software, that Curse is now charging them for software maintainence. Perhaps Curse is no longer developing the forum at all, and are ratcheting up the cost as if to say "we don't feel like working on this anymore, but if you insist, we'll continue for a while longer", much as Microsoft has continued to patch Windows XP for a few very large and high-paying customers.
Furthermore, I doubt there's a way to export/import the data into a different platform, so migrating to something more sustainable would cost a fair bit of expensive dev time, not to mention re-learning different tools and adapting any custom widgets, etc. And it's not like they have the rights to release the database structure to the community and let them develop the tool, unless Curse sold all the rights to the platform along with the website.
So yeah, as others have said, $$$$$$, or lack thereof. And I'd lump in thinking like a corporation with a product and users, rather than the small group of humans running a community platform used by many other humans, some who care strongly.
the fact that you didn't address that he accused you and the moderators and admins of not being able to exploit them and make a profit out of them speaking and posting implies thats the real reason this forum is getting shut down.
I don't really regard my comment about exploitation as an accusation. It's merely a statement of fact about how capitalism works. If something doesn't make a profit for someone, it gets shut down, no matter how beneficial it is for the people who use it.
Java Minecraft is not shutting down anytime soon. It's where Mojang does their main work.
no don't
Man this is actually so sad. This site was like my childhood
F
First the FTB Forums and now Minecraftforum.net. Someone is intentionally trying to kill Minecraft.
forums are DEAD my guys. the time of forums being popular is over, the internet has moved on so it is no surprise that the websites on it go with it
