We're currently battling winter here in the office, but we managed to sneak out this small snapshot a little later than usual.
A full changelog for the Snapshot can be found on Minecraft.net.
CHANGES IN 18W09A
- Added underwater ruins!
- Added new coral blocks!
- Phantoms no longer spawn in the end
- Phantoms despawn in the daytime

UNDERWATER RUINS
We've ruined the game. Again.
- Come in many different shapes and sizes!
- Cold ruins can be found in cold, frozen, ocean biomes - regardless of depth
- Warm ruins can be found in warm, lukewarm, and deep lukewarm biomes
- Can generate alone or in a big ruined village
- You can also sometimes find them slightly underground or slightly above sealevel
- They can contain mysterious treasures! So mysterious that we haven't even added the real treasure yet.
- A few more things to come in a future snapshot...
CORAL
Pretty blocks! Or should they be mobs? I'm not entirely sure.
- Comes in 5 colors: blue, pink, purple, red, yellow
- Requires water to stay alive
- If it dies, it dies. Sorry.
- Currently only obtainable in the creative inventory
- World generation to come in a future snapshot...

To get snapshots, open your launcher and go to the "launch options" tab. Check the box saying "Enable snapshots" and save. To switch between the snapshot and normal version, you can find a new dropdown menu next to the "Play" button. Back up your world first or run the game on in a different folder (In the "launch options" page).
Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com.
Snapshots can corrupt your world, please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds. 1.13 will have a lot of experimental snapshots that may break everything and smell funny. This may be one of those snapshots. This is what happens when Mojang are changing all the things!
Share your thoughts on how 1.13 is shaping up in the comments below!
The oceans are starting to take shape!
They mustn't lose sight of what originally gave Minecraft that special feeling while playing the first time, the mystery, and the unknown. I do like it how they merged 1.13 and 1.14 together, that adds far more content in a single update, far more to discover. But they need a real game changer soon; something that fundamentally changes the way the gameplay flows to restore that good ol' feeling of great mystery that it had back when players first started.
But I don't think update after update of stuff is a good way to restore the mysterious atmosphere that the game once had (or at least, it had for me). Sure, it adds cool stuff, but it tends to make gameplay too complicated given too many features over time...
I'm not complaining, these updates are great and all; but they need to change something fundamental soon! To usher in that old feeling of mystery (and they need to make the Overworld more lively altogether).
Definitely, it's such a great change of attitude!
OMG! This feels so modded! /s
In addition to the previously mentioned villager bugs (not breeding, not recognizing doors, wandering away from villages, etc.), I've noticed that Strongholds don't appear to be spawning in the latest snapshots.
In Creative mode, you can use Eyes of Ender to find the location of a Stronghold, and I've found the corridors, libraries, etc., but not an end gate. None have been over ravines, the eyes lead me to solid blocks and hover where the gate is supposed to be.
In Survival, there appear to be no Strongholds at all. The Eyes lead to you to spots where you can dig all you like, but there are no Strongholds to find.
I know these are snapshots, but I really like Survival, and since the game is malfunctioning in different modes, being able to actually play in survival (where i can trade and get the magic stuff I need to progress) would be nice.
snapshots are not meant for normal play. they are meant for testing of new, partially implemented changes. if you want a normal play experience, wait for the release.
I completely understand the point of that. However, testing has been a little difficult when key parts of the game don't work. Unless I build an end portal in creative, how will we know the end doesn't have bugs now? Since I've found different bugs in creative vs. survival, I can't possibly tell if the end functions in survival at all.
These are impediments to thorough testing.
That's why you don't play survival in a snapshot
I love it.... One thing though, I think you should make it so that the coral blocks come back to life when water is reapplied. I realize that is not how real coral behaves but it would be so fun to have a block that changed colors! Can't wait to see the sunken ships and the dolphins!
Hey! Been messing around with the update, cant seem to get heads to work.
Tried : /give @p minecraft:skeleton_skull{Damage:3,SkullOwner:<Name>}}
Any Cures?
They could try to add in a few more moves with the elytra like loop-de-loops or spring moves or whatever, an enchantment for infinite flight and being able to use the spacebar to gain altitude and shift to lose altitude...like a jet buuuut without fireworks. BTW love the changes and I'd like to see what will come next in the future snapshots and updates!
Mojang...you've done it again!
plz add that herobrine staff cuz i'm not good with complicated commands ok.
i wonder how many times mojang has to say it to get it through everyones thick skulls:
Herobrine is not real, never was and Never will be.
I'd sure would be nice to have Steve's eyes glow white after having every positive effect though.
I personally love what they are doing with the new update; however, the loot doesn't seem to be good enough considering that drowning is still a hazard.
Custom igloo structure i created that worked fine in 18w08 crashes the game / server in 18w09a.
Still want large sailable boats in the main game. Ocean swimming is ok, but it be nice see it done. I doubt they'll do it.
For me, the biggest appeal about larger boats is the idea of being able to actually build them, instead of a crafting recipe that only has nine units of space and basically makes the same thing every time. Of course, that's easier said than done, given the engine and how much the UGO team struggled getting their mod to work on it.
I picture the right kind of large boat as like an entity that doesn't use moving blocks, but an entity that can get bigger and more detailed if you right click on it with blocks, making it a shape that came from the player's own imagination.
Like I said, easier said than done. Minecraft is nasty about moving platforms.
