Please note: this change is now in effect, you must merge your Minecraft Forum account with a Twitch account. If you need any support with this please get in touch here.
Last year Curse and the Minecraft Forum joined the Twitch family and subsequently, we have provided users with the ability to merge their Minecraft Forum account with a new or existing Twitch account. With Twitch account merging, we’re able to provide more streamlined account security, faster user support, and an easier log-in process. Now, we’d like to extend these benefits to all Minecraft Forum users.
Merging your account into a Twitch account takes less than a minute, and your Minecraft Forum nickname will remain the same. Your posts, subscriptions, messages and servers will be unchanged. After merging accounts, you’ll simply log in to the forum using your Twitch credentials.
Starting on the 23rd of October, all users will need to merge their Minecraft Forum account with a new or existing Twitch account. If you’d like to merge your account before October 23rd, you can do so via My Account then click Merge Accounts. If your account is not merged on October 23rd you will be unable to log in to the Minecraft Forum until you do so, however, your account will not be deleted.
Have any questions? Feel free to send me a Private Message, ask in the comments below or submit a support ticket. For a more in-depth overview of the merge process please visit the Twitch Merge FAQ.
I know that people can create accounts quickly, I'm just asking why we're being forced to do it. Why do we have to have a Twitch account to continue doing Minecraft Forums? It sounds like they're trying to control all the accounts we have through Twitch.
I don't want to sound rude here but if high-level creators keep getting hacked, it's their own fault they use the same password for everything.
Second, there are a lot of people as lazy as I am, who don't really want to make a Twitch account.
Third, why do this? Why not spend your time making MCF better for everyone instead of forcing us to make an account that many of us will never use?
I think I will be just leaving this Forum and find another one.
EDIT: I have to agree with Mastermined. Because of the decline of Minecraft with Microsoft (wooo yay im so happy wooo) why are you trying to turn people away? Seems counterproductive tbh.
i too find this account merging trend despicable. i instinctively desire to show twitch my middle finger and say no. i know they won't be upset, but i'd get a small bit of satisfaction.
but guys, can we be reasonable about this?
citricsquid said he can't successfully manage forum security. he has decided on using another company's system. granted, he could have spent money to have someone upgrade the security but let's be fair: how many of you would pay (a lot) for something you can get on a silver plate?
now we could let this forum suffer a bunch of users leaving (is there even an alternative place to go?), or we can work towards keeping it an awesome place for minecraft players, both new and seasoned. yes twitch will show some of its ads here; so what... people make the forum, and this is an awesome one - that tells a lot about the people. let's not let that go to waste because we dislike twitch.
Guess I'm finally going to leave the forum, then. What a damned shame. Can't wait until Twitch starts doing things that require antitrust suits that never come about, like the rest of the various megacorps.
And if someone can't make an account? Even if the username hasn't been taken? I tried to make an account, but it simply won't allow me so. So honestly, could be my few last posts on this site that I spent YEARS on, and that's saying something.
Plus,I can always speak on discord and read other forms of entertainment, such as SCP articles.
Try again
Seems like everyone is going against this. . . So am I! Twitch basically has no benefit and has nothing to do with minecraft and has no reason to. The Minecraft community doesn't want a streaming community rammed down their throats with no good reason. The only people who want to benefit from this is twitch itself, to add people to their world unwillingly is kinda selfish. We have no option to go with twitch or not and that's unfair, if you HAVE to do this update, change it. To benefit US not just yourself.
Well, I understand that the new Twitch account system would be more secure (theoretically, at least...), but I personally do not care. If a user wants more security for their account, they can change their password regularly or merge with Twitch as an option.
Regardless of whether or not this is actually beneficial, it is annoying as heck and driving people away from the forums (or at least driving people to say they're leaving the forums). Most people (myself included) don't want extra security, and view this as an intrusion of some kind (even if many people, myself included, aren't able to say exactly what kind of intrusion it is... I want to say privacy, but maybe it's just the deprivation of the ability to choose that gets on my nerves).
From a moderator/forum manager's point of view, this might be a good idea. From Twitch's point of view, it's a way to get more users. For a forum user, it probably ranges from being unimportant to extremely annoying.
My point is: I don't want or need more security, I don't want some company/corporation/forum manager telling me what to do with my online accounts, and I don't want to see so many people leave the forums because of this.
This may be the end for me here as well. I have no overt objection to creating a Twitch account, other than the fact that very username I've tried is unavailable. I have no interest in being user1234567, because I'm OCD and names like that irritate me to no end.
Also, some of the usernames I have tried have never had any contest posted, probably because they were forced to create a twitch account as well just so they could participate somewhere else, which is the biggest problem with this nonsense. Huge amounts of users sign up that never participate, but fill up the username pool.
While I do understand the reasons behind this, I can't create a Twitch account with a crappy username (my OCD won't allow it), and if that is the requirement for continued participation here, then I won't be participating after 10/23.
Where will you go? I doubt I'll stick around either. You, like me, are one of a small handful of frequent posters in Survival forum. A couple have already dropped off, it seems. I wonder if we could get the forum's backbone to migrate together.
How about discord?
Try merging your account, like the forum is requiring. I had the same issue (my sunperp account was unavailable if I attempted to create a new account on twitch), but when I merged my curse account and asked it to create a new twitch account, suddenly, the sunperp twitch username was available for me. I suspect that the reason you can't register a new account on twitch with your forum username is simply that twitch may have reserved your username because of the existence of your forum username (if that makes any sense).
Well, thank you for saying so, Janskydunbird! I'm very sorry to hear that you won't be returning.
I thought about doing the same, but . . .
. . . Unfortunately, even if all the people who say they'll not return don't, the Twitch corporatocracy won't care. It won't even notice, nor will it hurt Twitch one bit. It's clear from reading the replies to comments here that Twitch doesn't care at all. Citricsquid has accurately marginalized the 100 or so who have said they won't return as a tiny fraction of those who will stay and those who will later join as Minecraft continues to grow. Leaving will only punish those forumites who stay, and looking at the current state of the Jave Edition Survival forum, we're few.
So, I hope you stay. I hope everyone does. Staying isn't rewarding Twitch's disgraceful behavior. Leaving isn't spiting them. Twitch won't notice either way and simply doesn't care.
Farewell!
Okay so I'm jumping into this discussion in the middle and I have not read all 5 pages to please excuse and repetition.
I do not want a "twitch" account neither do I want my MC Forum account linked to one, I just want to have my normal basic standard Forum account. If I don't merge my account will it disappear because if it will I'll go somewhere else like planet minecraft.
I know what you're going to say "You don't need to use your twitch account, you just need to have it." while this is true I would rather not get a "twitch" account. I don't even know what "twitch" is!
This is ridiculous, I shouldn't have to create another account for another website just to post something here.
What do you guys even gain from this, a few extra pennies worth of profit?
So, now it is no longer optional...
I guess I won't be posting here any longer, then, and will have to take down my mods before I go since I won't be able to touch them after the 23rd. They can still be found on planetminecraft for the time being for anyone that wants them, even though they haven't been updated past 1.8.9.
It's been fun, folks!
I wonder how long before this site goes the way of the CurseApp.
Suddenly Twitch themed, with several clicks needed to get to the actual functions users wanted.
Oh well, I wasn't here often anyway.
I'm one for unique usernames and passwords for important sites.
It doesn't matter if the Twitch servers are more secure then the ones they acquire, it still weaker security, A compromised twitch login results in all sites using it being compromised. Also two factor identification is not infallible, users of other services (Steam, Warcraft and PayPal) have experienced compromised accounts despite using it.
I do have and use a Twitch account, I'm against this merger due to security reduction.
Also not happy the useful mod maintaining CurseApp was replaced with the "socialize first mod maintaining afterthought" TwitchApp but was willing to use it until merger was forced there also.
Well MCF, I have been here and watched this forum grow since 2011. Unfortunately it has been decreasing in quality and content for the last couple years. I stopped posting a long time ago but I usually visited the site on a daily basis to see what was going on. We merged with Curse which I didn't like but I was okay with since my WoW days already used curse for mods. MCF was still good, was busy, and a lot of good information being posted. Then Microsoft happened and I don't know.... it seemed like it really started going downhill from there.
The other possibility is that I have grown up. MCF is no longer, nor has it been for sometime, the place I remember. The people I interacted with, played with, posted with, I don't think most of them are even around anymore. I still play MC now and then but mainly solo modded since vanilla just lost its appeal years ago and server communities lost their appeal with the incoming children. But I think that time has ended and this forced merging is its deathnell.
So after years of watching MCF grow, MC change, interacting with the community (and watching the kiddies discover and ruin many MC servers) it is time to say goodbye. It was fun while it lasted but this friendship has come to an end due to the forced merging with other groups that I have no interest being a part of.
Farewell MCF community, the memories will be missed and remembered with fondness. In parting, I hope you all find your place again whether it be with Twitch, another site, or in moving on and away from what MC and MCF used to be. Cheers all, and godspeed.

Same, same, and same.
That sounds like my story. As painful as it's been for folks like us to watch this decline, I can't fathom the demoralizing, soul-crushing experience the forum staff must've gone through. I imagine most of the old guard have quit by now.
This is the straw that broke the camel's back.
