Jens, the lead creative designer of Minecraft, has announced today that pixel artist Jasper Boerstra has joined the Minecraft team to work on fixing up the pixel art in Minecraft.
The artstyle in Minecraft has changed over the years. Partly because Notch and I have different techniques, and partly because I've changed my own style. Jasper's job now is to make a sweep to get everything in synch, style- and color-wise.
Here's what we know so far:
- These changes will be first released as a resource pack for the community to review and provide feedback on.
- After the changes are complete they will become the default textures in every version of Minecraft.
- A few previews of the potential changes have been shared so far, take a look at those below:
What do you think, are you excited for Minecraft to have a unified style across all textures? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
I agree.
Yeah, weird. Maybe mojang does not like resource packs.
Btw, it's java edition.
Not a fan of these, really. I would much prefer this as a resource pack. It'd be frustrating if these became the default textures because I would want to use a resource pack for the original textures, but that would cause lag on the business computer I'm using now.
16x resource packs make zero difference to performance on minecraft, resource packs typically only impact framerate if they are higher resolution than the original textures.
From my experience, that is not the case.
Have you tried OptiFine?
I've been using it for 3 years.
I think its all in your imagination. 16x packs have little to zero performance impact, only if they add a lot of animations and more extensive features, like detailed block models.
Are you sure having a cheap business computer with an unnamed integrated GPU wouldn't affect anything?
I like most of the new textures, I'm not very sure about the new wood logs though, the new bricks look very neat, I'm sure I'll use bricks in my buildings more often, and the new obsidian looks... wow! awesome! O_O
The good thing is that if I don't like any of the new textures, I'll be able to change them with a resource pack
That's the spirit. Use a resource pack (some people are forgetting about this option).
These have potential, but I feel like changing something that us long-term players have gotten used to for years isn't such a great idea. I get it, its just block textures, but still. The consistency of the old textures was nice.
You could just use a resource pack. Plus, these will also be consistent with each other. It will all be one art style as opposed to two as it is now.
As resourcepack (like official maybe) -- fine, but meh as default
While I think those textures would be very nice for a texture pack, I don't really see them fit as default ones as they're too complex so to say while MC's textures are mostly simplfied and don't have as smooth shading(you can also compare it to the grass texture and will see the difference), I can understand how the Alpha textures looked outdated, but those textures are fine in my view and don't need a change.
At least it isn't pushed instantly, do hope they make it the "standard resource pack" so that the community gets aware of this and everyone replies(Also hope that not too many stay on old versions due to mods and all and as such miss out on this), hopefully we can get something that both sides are happy with, even if it would mean a preincluded resource pack.
They are unfinished previews. That's the idea of this.
Finally! Please fix the water texture ;0
The smoothness of the birch may make sense in the context of all the other changed textures. Push on.
I think all the new textures look really cool, especially the new obsidian texture, super cool!
Speaking as someone who painstakingly retextured Bricks to connect across their sides properly I'm disappointed that this is basically just a recolour. Iron looks the same, Obsidian actually looks pretty decent, but then the Birch Log and Bricks throw it off by being so ugly. There aren't really a whole lot of textures in Minecraft that need changing: Diorite, Andesite and Granite are commonly cited seeing as they're basically useless in their raw form, as is Netherrack. But we already have resource packs, and by changing so many good textures you'll create a whole bunch of players who use an "old default" resource pack.
