Jens, the lead creative designer of Minecraft, has announced today that pixel artist Jasper Boerstra has joined the Minecraft team to work on fixing up the pixel art in Minecraft.
The artstyle in Minecraft has changed over the years. Partly because Notch and I have different techniques, and partly because I've changed my own style. Jasper's job now is to make a sweep to get everything in synch, style- and color-wise.
Here's what we know so far:
- These changes will be first released as a resource pack for the community to review and provide feedback on.
- After the changes are complete they will become the default textures in every version of Minecraft.
- A few previews of the potential changes have been shared so far, take a look at those below:
What do you think, are you excited for Minecraft to have a unified style across all textures? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the new textures. IMO, they are too "busy".
The brick textures on the right really bother my eyes. It's like a blurry texture. somehing like you might see after drinking for a while.
Agreed.
Agree
Only destroys the 8-year work of the builders.
Agreed. It just looks blurry, lol. I don't see much wrong with the current textures. Just fix the ones that are out of place why fix what isn't broken? Oh well, "Real Default" resource packs incoming!
agreed
yeah, it's trying to shade or use gradients or whatever. These are 16x16m pixel textures. They are going to be pixelated. They look better just accepting that and having discrete colors and pixels rather than trying to blend stuff together and looking blurry while still being 16x16.
They really want to change that up, maybe the default resource pack should have increased resolution or something, but trying to make the current low res pack something it isn't just looks bad
agree i dont like any of the new ones except iron blocks because it looks the same
yes, agreed, i would like to see an option to change it to default and texture in the video settings.
Total agreement here.
I like the idea and like yhe overall style, however...
"The feeling of blurriness is too strong in these ones, young Blockwalker!"
This is mainly because you just can't add that level of detail to mere 16 bits textures. It's kind of trying to eat one cake and still having it too: That kind of work becomes possible only in 32 pixels or more. Below, you end up losing more on one side, than what you add on the other side.
- Streamlining the textures _all_ blocks (and supposedly items too) into a single consistent artistic style: +1 point
- Adding "blurryness": -2 points
Personally I recommend just fixing the few blocks that feel out of place and then add as default vanilla a choice between both 16 pixels ("pure" like now) and 32 pixels (the improved stuff).
O think the leather item texture should be changed to a piece leather texture rather than a whole cow's body, it's just weird when you kill one and they drop 2 Items making it appear the cow has 2 skins.
then it is now safe to make cows drop more leather to balance the game, on my experience on laying minecraft, I always get the diamond and Iron armor than the leather.
Agreed.
Honestly, I love the way that minecraft does not look too realistic. Maybe these textures should be a texture pack or something, but I really love the current vanilla ones. I think those look too realistic and blurry. When that happens, it limits the amount of things that you can use them for. For example, the birch wood. Before, you could use it for walls, floors, ceilings, pathways, anything. Now the only thing it would look good on is trees. I don't like them much. You should just make them into a resource pack, not change the textures completely. Or maybe add a settings option to switch between them, but please don't replace them completely. I do not like them, and I will not support them. Minecraft has been going in a good direction, but this is not a good thing in my eyes. Please don't change the textures. We love the ones that are already there.
One of my friends said it looked like if someone cut a hotdon and took cement between them
I agree too. That's what resource packs are for.
Thank you Mojang for the thought, but I think the current textures are what makes minecraft unique and instantly recognizable. If they do change,
I'll just make a resource pack of the old textures again.
I'm just fine with my faithful resource pack
Yes, but new things always better than first Notch and his team trying something new
The brick blocks and the birch logs in my opinion, are way too darn smooth.
Ehh I kind of like the new textures for 1.13, they're not that bad.
