Following the announcement of the Better Together Update this weekend at E3 there have been questions about whether or not cross-platform play would be coming to Playstation consoles too, and whether the decision was in the hands of Sony or Microsoft. From an interview with Eurogamer PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan confirmed that there are currently no plans for cross-platform play with Playstation consoles, and it's the decision of Sony.
Minecraft works cross-platform between Switch, Xbox and PC. Today, Rocket League was announced as working cross-platform between Switch, Xbox and PC. Both don't work cross-platform with PlayStation. Now, is this Sony not playing ball? What is actually going on here?
Jim Ryan: It's certainly not a profound philosophical stance we have against this. We've done it in the past. We're always open to conversations with any developer or publisher who wants to talk about it. Unfortunately it's a commercial discussion between ourselves and other stakeholders, and I'm not going to get into the detail of that on this particular instance. And I can see your eyes rolling.
Well, you must see that PlayStation owners are upset. They want to play with Switch owners, PC owners and Xbox One owners for these two big and important games, and they don't have an explanation for why. That's what I'm getting at, really.
Jim Ryan: Yeah. We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft - the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it's all ages but it's also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully.
It doesn't seem to be a problem for Nintendo, perhaps the most mindful video game company of the protection of children.
Jim Ryan: Yeah, that's true. Everybody has to take their own decisions. We'll do that. Like I say, we have no philosophical stance against cross-play at all.
Is this a done deal? Or are you leaving the door open, perhaps?
Jim Ryan: I don't think anything is ever a done deal. Anybody who is dogmatic in that manner is typically a fool. That said, to my knowledge, there is no live conversation ongoing at the moment.
Something doesn't seem right...
If you ask me, PC manufacturers and OS producing companies for those PCs aren't as direct competition as other consoles like Xbox. Most well-off people have a computer for many reasons, but can choose if they want a gaming console and which one they want.
Edit: Not entirely relevant as a reply, but it addresses confusion with PS games compatible with PC ones.
HAS SONY BEEN CAUGHT?! BECAUSE THERE WAS A WHOLE LOT OF "REASONS". AND ECKOSOLDIER SAID THAT THEY WHERE POOR EXCUSES. Your right though... I'm very shocked.
#Sony
Is sony lying?? We don't know yet. #Sony
PC and Sony have an agreement for child-protection and child-safety... That's why cross-play for rocket league. But Xbox doesn't have an agreement with sony. But if nintendo is doing it and they are all-out for child-protection, then that should be enough for sony.

Bunch of talk Sony is being Stupid
I really wanted to play cross platform on my playstation this sucks i guess its best to switch to xbox
*switch to switch*
FTFY
Same here!!
RIP i bought 2 copies of minecraft ps vita edition one for my ps vita and one for my ps vita tv
I'm frankly just mentally radiant that everyone stupid enough to continue supporting Sony after all the ludicrous things they've been a part of is getting shafted by this.
That'll learn ya.
I like PC mods.
See? individuals do talk about MC java. (lol)
Well... I do. (lol again)
I wonder if they realize that PC is not cross-compatible. o3o
I... I need you to restructure that entire statement.
I'm with ya, GunnarKelly. I'm confused.
Beyond that, https://www.cnet.com/news/sony-still-blocks-cross-platform-multiplayer-xbox-nintendo-e3-2017/?ftag=COS-05-10-aaa0a&linkId=38747098 also discusses the Sony issue and firmly puts the blame on Sony with a brief discussion of what can be done about it.
Hang on, let me take a stab at it:
"I will repeat what I said in the last article:
I don't care whether or not we (Translators note: I'm operating off the assumption that "we" means "Java Edition players.") get crossplay, as long as it's still possible to create large and complex mods (like the kind that adds 10x as much content to the game or modifies how the base game is played) in future versions of Minecraft: Java Edition, like what can be done in current versions."
Am I somewhere in the ballpark here?
Yes, and you got a home run.
Aww, I like cross platform. They should had included it
Well if Nintendo agrees and their ENTIRE BRAND IS KID BASED AND PROTECTION then why PlayStation when we have games like Let It Die and others just now caring about kids protection >:( What's the difference if we all connect together and play with other companies :'(
Exactly, and it is a little dumb. But i also don't get why they are doing that... Plus, isn't that playstation being a parent? Let the real parents decide!! If they find it OK, then let it be! Also, there is a petition going on... But we're trying to hit 10'000 people, and we have around 6'800... So tell your friends about this petition and to sign it... Here's the link to sign the petition... https://www.change.org/p/sony-minecraft-ps4-crossplay. After we hit 10'000 people, it's being sent to sony. Then they may re-think the entire thing. So there IS STILL a CHANCE for cross-play.

Being sent to SONY.

If you didn't get it.
Wow, from sony's background is really sad to see them failing and I could see in the near future the fall of sony. While it's true alot of very young children could be exposed to some bad and negative things from the cross platform universe, they could also be exposed to it without it. It would have to be single player only games and then nobody would want them as both minecraft and rocket league are greatly improved and for sure ment for multiplayer. The "other stakeholders" are clearly going to be the downfall of sony, luckly ive bought out of consoles and only play on pc and android now.
