Microsoft plan to introduce the Minecraft Marketplace which will allow third party developers to distribute their custom Minecraft content, including worlds, texture packs and in-game activities. Here's what we know so far:
- The Minecraft Marketplace and Minecraft Coins are expected to launch in beta in mid-April.
- The initial beta will not contain community content, that is coming later.
- Available initially will be feature packs for Minecraft -- such as new storylines, in-game activities or landscapes to explore.
- Available for Pocket Edition and Windows 10 Edition, not available on consoles or PC Minecraft.
- Purchases will be made using Minecraft Coins, initial content will cost between $1 and $10.
- The Minecraft Marketplace will allow content creators to make a living from Minecraft.
- All content is reviewed beforehand to protect players.
But there are greater treasures still - made by the amazing Minecraft community and made easily available to you through the all new Marketplace. For the first time, Pocket and Windows 10 players can browse, download and play cool community creations from within the game itself.
We’ve partnered with heroic ‘crafters well-known to the community to build up a launch catalogue of amazing adventure maps, texture packs, minigames and more. Noxcrew, BlockWorks, Qwertyuiop The Pie, Blockception, Sphax, Eneija Silverleaf, Imagiverse, Polymaps and Razzleberry Fox are the folk on board at launch, but we’re opening up submissions to anyone with a registered business. I would rather see MC on w10 operate the way Java does and not charge through the roof for a simple bucket fill and I would rather not see the community get torn apart because of the inevitable squabbles that come with paid modding like it did in Skyrim.
Nobody says the marketplace is a bad idea to get additional content for the console editions. It's a bad idea to want money for the content.
Kindly send my regards to Microsoft so shove it with their crappy money hungry microtransactions.
Im wondering of they even know this forum
Alright, so figured I'll share my thoughts before there's a burning of a town over a minor thing. Think about this from Microsoft's point of view, they invested about $2B on Minecraft. Now, for a company of their size, it's not that much yet it is a big enough mark to warrant getting their money back at the very least. Imagine buying a warehouse and leaving it to rot, pretty much. This is one small way to get a return on that purchase, in economic terms.
So far they have kept their promise of leaving java alone and I believe they will hold up to it. However, it would be in their best interest to drop support for it to push the Win10 version. I don't know if people who bought the PC version get it for free or you have to buy it, but I guarantee you that if they were to make you pay for the game a second time a lot of people would just stick with the old version.
From what I'm understanding, though, is that this is a good thing for MCPE users as it removes a lot of the hassle of installing maps and skins. Personally, I would not mind if they brought the feature to java as long as it's a one time purchase (buy the map, download whenever as many times as I want) as people have put a lot of work into them and, hey, $5 to the people that did Terra Swoop Force instead of relying on donations which aren't static prices would encourage people to continue the hobby with a sustained income.
So long as I'm not forced to buy a Server Membership package, I don't see the harm in this.
As long as it stuck to just textures, sound and skins it wouldn't be the doom of the java version. The problem would come from if mods fell into this category of paid content. Imagine if every mod cost between $1 -$10, might not sound so bad if you only use a couple mods. Now imagine what that would all total up to just to play a pre-made modpack. Most of the mainstream modpacks have well over 50 mods. How many modpacks might get played then? What about the people who just love creating modpacks but now can't afford to? What about if you have a favorite youtuber or streamer, and now they can't afford to put out videos on that modpack? Let's say they can, what about the people who get enjoyment out of playing along with that youtuber or streamer? This is just scratching the surface of what the ramifications could be, depending on how the situation plays out. Not aimed at you specifically Jetra.
As with all things internet, this is just my opinion, and not necessarily anything that is certain.
Going to guess Fable and/or Gears of War, they were a pretty big studio from what I remember. Only thing I know is the Rare fiasco and what they did to BK and PD which has me mad.
For every rose I pick, there are thorns...It's sad that we live in a time where it's all about the money now. Maybe it will go back to the old ways, people just need to stop falling into the traps.
The problem is, it would be cheaper to by the full version of PC Minecraft that spend money on these tokens, to go get things that are free and are 10x better on PC. And minecraft is a not a very resource intesive game, so most computers can run it, after the settings are optimized. Plus, as of now, it is possible to break the in-app purchases on the android version of PE very easily. Meaning getting things for free. Unless this is a big hit (which it wont be) it wouldnt come to PC edition because different people develop the Win 10 and PE versions, and (hopefully) the content creators just will screw it and give their content away for free, like they already do. As of now, making content for minecraft cant get you hate, because if you dont like it you dont have to download it, but if it costs real money, then it can ruin a content creator's career that really needs the money. This should honestly not make it out of the testing stages.
invader zim skin pack????? invader zim mash up pack??????
inb4 everyone starts spamming download links and piracy stuff
It's confirmed. Minecraft will be dead. Why?
Cause it's Reminds me of Steam trying to make their workshop mods payable content. These communities are built by the free content available by the talented creators. I'm all for these creators getting paid, but this should be an additional option for people who are using this marketplace to donate their money to the creators that they believe deserve it.
Not only that, but you know that Microsoft is a company built by greed. They will somehow manipulate the system to make more money.
This will bring so many rage to the community. And this is possibly the worst move by either Mojang or Microsoft into Minecraft.
Just wait until buyable items like op sword sold for 1000$. It will happen, cause it's Microsoft.
I'm honestly looking forward to it. I would personally not mind paying a small sum for an amazing adventure map or creation world, I can't wait. I'm especially looking forward to the open world exploration worlds.
If you don't mind paying, then donate to the people through paypal and such. Not through microsoft.
Roblox Dev-Ex all over again
Paid mods? KILL WITH FIRE!
Kids, you really don't understand, some people spend months-even years making creations just for what? Some people to come around and download it for a couple of weeks? The reason creators want this update is to be able to dedicate their time fully, to create content like never before seen.
do you have any idea how much money you get off of adds from a mod? If your popular it pays very well. (Thaumcraft, Aether, Thermal Dynamics, ect)
It started with the skin packs. Now, this. Welp, we all know where this is going. Hope people like me are willing enough to stick with PC edition.
Just don't use it and they will abandon it in time.
Exactly.
