Speed runs in games are nothing new - in the last few years, Binding of Isaac in particular has seen many of them - but they go as far back as 80's console games, where people try (with or without tool assistance) to set speed records for game completion. Minecraft wouldn't seem to lend itself to the speed run scene at a glance, but there exists one primary "win condition" of the game, as many see it: the death of the Ender Dragon.
Sethbling tackles the task of ending the dragon from a fresh, brand new savegame, and does so in under 17 minutes! Pretty awesome, take a look!
The thing about a different seed every time is that you can't compare records. There is a seed where the portal is visible from the surface and then there are seeds where you might not be able to find the portal.
If everyone uses the same seed then you can compare times.
