According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft may be nearing a deal to buy Mojang AB, makers of the Minecraft video game franchise. If the deal proves legitimate, it would value Mojang at more than $2 billion, and could be signed as early as this week. So far, neither Mojang AB or Microsoft have commented publicly on the situation.
In the past, Mojang - and Notch, in particular - have expressed no desire to be involved with other major corporations, or sell the Minecraft franchise. Mojang has often bucked the trend of the video game industry, refusing to give in on principle to a number of standard practices.
At this time, there is no clear confirmation or information about the alleged deal. Keep your eyes peeled - this is going to be a very interesting week!
My feelings exactly.
But if they make stupid decisions, like you have to BUY to go on multiplayer or make mine craft only compatible with microsoft, then I am going to be really disappointed. I would make my own personal MOD called 'the old mine craft'.
So, overall my opinion is as long as they don't make stupid ass decisions or nerd things up, I am ok with it.
you DO realize that the term "MOD" means you are MODIFYING the program, right?... since when has M$ EVER, let anyone modify anything of theirs? especially to the extent that Mojang has allowed Modders to modify the base code of Minecraft itself... and once you did create that mod of yours then you'd get sued into oblivion for violating their copyright/TOS/DCMA/EULA whatever legal mumbo jumbo it is that they'd get you under... because you had to use their code (now that they bought it) to do the mods in the first place, therefore it is STILL their code...
and to all the people that think they'll still be able to play the 1.8 and below versions... nope, that'll get locked out due to the fact you have to "phone home" to authenticate your copy and M$ will keep the servers for that function going for a while, then they'll get shut down.. POOF... no more playing, unless you play a cracked version... at which time you'd be, AGAIN, playing illegally... blech.
while i'm not specifically against MS from buying it, it seems like a good deal for the company, and, i know that "I" would be hard-pressed to find a reason to NOT sell at that price, so i'm also not against Notch for doing it, it just annoys me that while i can *probably* continue to play for quite some time to come, i know that M$ will HAVE TO change the way the game makes money in order to get back their ROI... it's a simple fact of business life... THAT'S where most, if not all people are worried... will M$ kill off modding in order to *force* us to purchase their DLC?, will M$ start legal actions against YouTubers like Skydoesminecraft, Direwolf20, Yosgcast, etc... in order to either stop them entirely or to "get their cut" of their proceeds?, will they jack the price up to $50 for each user, will it go to a "pay-to-play" model that you have to have a subscription to even login to play ? etc. etc. etc. more posts have been made along those lines, i don't need to go further. but i fear the worst and can only hope for better...
...k.
But what do we do about Microsoft?
It makes me too much laugh that even my stomach starts hurting. ChooseWaistTrainer
