Games don't go past Beta phase, they just get released. your friend is trying to be smart and failing. As others have said, this only applies to add-on type material to the game like new game modes. Normal updates to the game will be free.
It was just a fun little online competition. No reason to get all butthurt over it.
valve got butthurt about it o_O
@ 12 year old. This is why you don't get it, you are looking at your own opinion, not objectively. You have your opinion to have, but you aren't understanding that people who look at the details of a game, would find Mojang lacking. I am not going to talk anymore because I misunderstood your opinion for your desire to know why Valve lost to mojang and why Mojang would have not won in other competitions.

Portal was still 4 years ago anyway.
Minecraft is fresh in people's minds, plus it is less limited than any of those other games. Half of what makes minecraft great is multiplayer plugins/mods/texture packs, and none of those are the result direct result of Mojang. At this point lots of people are infact just asking for optimized code, no bugs, Mod API, and just let players do what they want without the annoyance, but that is another issue entirely. People find more entertainment from the game because of the work of each other not so much mojang or Notch. Not to say that minecraft isn't fun, but without the extra goodies and multiplayer servers, it would be a lot less than what it is.
You had to do some sort of haxors. You have diamond and coal ore in there quite obviously above the diamond level. There is no way for me to know if you didn't do that for all the material. However if you mined the diamond and coal, and just /item'd in the ore forms, I find that acceptable to achieve this unique goal. I like the idea. I may try this in SMP.
You mean consumers. Any 10 year old can vote for this, while the majority of people who have played and enjoyed games like Half-Life and portal may be less aware of this vote and think it matters very little(which it true). Honestly Nintendo has made revolutionary games, pioneering 3rd person 3d enviornment navigation with Legend of Zelda OOT. They simply lost out having several of the more praised titles in video game history. A lot of the people who have voted don't have the experience with the other game companies to know what they have made and vote appropriately. A lot of people who bought those games over a decade ago aren't going to go out of their way to look for this online voting and then cast votes every step of the way. The minecraft crowd is internet oriented and are more likely to not know as much about other companies, and be more knowledgeable/willing to vote.
When Notch first released it, it was forced on, and I thought he coded in some terrible error into the game. As soon as I figured out it was f8(because I methodically pressed every button I could) I told everyone on the server and praises of joy were had. No one likes f8, it is an unwanted feature. Even for recording it is bad, it doesn't make movement less jittery, just makes the jitter feel more like a wave of inconsistent movement. Nothing about it is helpful.
So Valve cares about a competition where any 10 year old fanboy can vote? Maybe they don't realize that. In any competition with non-objective judges, Mojang would have lost early on, or not even have been in the running since it has no released game to submit.

Faction colors, or team colors for games like spleef.
Any other use for clothes is better done by editing your skin texture because there will be more possibilities.
