    But according to the wiki

"Prior to the Adventure Update, these highly mountainous landforms were found in all type of biomes, but from the Adventure Update onwards are very rare outside the Extreme Hills biome."

Mountains, for me, make worlds more interesting... and I've stuck with a world I created two years ago for this reason.

After reading some other threads on the topic... I can see the frustration others have with the blandness of the current terrain generator. I don't think I've ever kept a world that was generated after 1.8. They're all either from alpha builds or early beta.

the problem with mountains reaching to the 256 height limit is that you then wouldn't be able to build on top of them... hence the word limit. but mountains definitely do need to be a lot bigger.
Back in the day before beds... and when creepers seemed more aggressive, it seemed an adventure to try to get to the top of a mountain and set up an outpost. I remember those nights were I died, respawned back at base camp and had to race through the dark in a panic up steep slopes and cliffs to see if I could find my stuff before it disappeared... to find the creepers waiting for me.

I'm aware that it makes no sense to go right to the 256 limit. Even 220 with the extra head room might be fine. By then one might be so far up they can't see much the valley below if MC is set on Normal distance. It would create that sense of isolation.

All this being said... people play MC for different reasons. I could care less about many of the developments in the game the past year or so. I still play simple survival and exploration and like my worlds to be interesting and challanging.

I've long heard rumors that MC would add higher mountains and I thought when the elevation was increased, this was soon to be coming. And wasn't there a Mountian preset that was never active?

    But according to the wiki

"Prior to the Adventure Update, these highly mountainous landforms were found in all type of biomes, but from the Adventure Update onwards are very rare outside the Extreme Hills biome."

Mountains, for me, make worlds more interesting... and I've stuck with a world I created two years ago for this reason.

I'd like to see extreme mountains close to the 256 elevation limit. Since they would require wide bases... rare elements like diamonds could be found deep inside. It could use new elevation dependent biomes... with stunted trees... then closer to the summits a subarctic biome with nothing but grass or snow. Maybe due to the extreme environment, health could run down at an accereated rate unless one has a shelter. To make it worth the risk exploring... there should be something up there that can only be found by taking the risk. I'm open to suggestions how this could be integrated into gameplay.

    Just a thought.

posted a message on How Do I Salvage/Open Old Alpha .dat Maps?
Thanks gerbil and rodabon. I still had the 1.1 jar in my bin folder... and on a hunch I renamed it minecraft.jar and popped those old saves from Feb 2011 into the save folder. They needed to be converted... and all worked in 1.1, then easily converted to the current version.

Wow... I hadn't been back in some of those worlds for almost 2 years... back before I knew how to make swords or torches because I wanted to see where I could get on my own... where I sweated out the nights in the dark... small caves or forts... and I never drifted far from home base. I finally decided I wanted to make an outpost on a nearby cliff. I was always being ambushed by creepers... and had many a mad dash from my spawn point back up the cliffs in the dark to salvage my stuff.

    Those were the days!

posted a message on Need help, can't play Minecraft and I think I need more RAM!
I started with 4 gigs of RAM but found two defective sticks and I'm down to two gigs. I'm running a 64x64 texture pack and distance at normal. It runs fine. Two things I can think of... one is your on-board graphics aren't up to it... as mine weren't. But I'm running something that optimizes the system called System Tuneup with something that's called turbo mode. So using the free NovaBench benchmarking... I once was getting about 25fps with NovaBench... that's not MC... but the graphics test. MC I was probably at 2-5fps when things got heated. I got a cheap videocard for about $70 with 1 gig of video RAM which brought the NB framerate to about 300 and the Tuneup program brought that up to 490fps. The actual MC framerate at 1080x1920 is in the 50-60fps range.

I have some old maps... the first ones I ever made back in Feb 2011 that I no longer can open. Someone mentioned once a two step process of reverting back to older versions of MC... but I'm not sure how that is done. Can anyone provide some directions? I did save... at least I think I saved, an entire .minecraft folder from back then. So the saves are intact. What else do I need to do?

    Thanks!

I think I know what the problem was. I have TWO Minecraft Launchers.... one is a shortcut to the exe file in the .minecraft folder. This one doesn't connect. But I have an older standalone launcher... and this is the one that has room for Minecraft news etc. Problem is I thought this second one... from way back in Aug 2011, no longer in use.

Thanks Tedster... I made the .bat file... with no success. Is there any preferred name? I just named it minecraft.bat.

But you might be on to something. I installed Java 7 update 13 on Feb 4th. And that might be when I started to have problems. I don't update every time since none of the last few updates interest me and it's a pain to keep looking for new texture packs... etc.

Connecting to the internet may help or downloading the 1.5.1 minecraft.jar
Thanks, but obviously I'm not having any trouble getting on line. I could do a manual installation but my real concern is why I'm not connecting in the first place.

I've had this problem for several months and I'm at a loss. Minecraft doesn't connect at all... I get no news, no force update option, no anything but the option to play off line.

I thought it might be a firewall problem but that doesn't explain the lack of the news page or the lack of the force update option. I can shut my firewall off... and it's the same. I have no special settings on the modem that I screwed up... like port forwarding. MC never needed it. It doesn't matter if I use MC patcher to patch MC or not.

Any ideas? I'm still back with 1.4.2.

    Thanks!

posted a message on Fly and Full Inventory In Survival Mode
I can't edit the title.. it should be in "FLYING IN SURVIVAL MAPS" Not survival mode.

This might have been posted before... and doing some research flying in survival maps was once a bug.

I was playing with region file mashups switching files from different maps and not seeing any pattern I created a superflat map and inserted just one file. I had a good chunk of on of my existing survival worlds and was able to fly. So I replaced all the files.

So it's possible to fly and have a full infinite creative inventory... and one strike demolition of blocks in any of your existing Survival maps.

Simply create a superflat creative world. Close it down and replace ALL the files in the REGION folder with the files from a REGION folder of a survival map. Make sure you've take precautions not to mess up any existing maps.

When you first start to play you'll be in creative mode... but you can go to options and switch on Survival mode if you want. It's not true survival mode since the mobs don't attack. It takes away a lot of the fun of Survival mode but it's a great tool to explore a world through flight and have that infinite inventory. And possibly one might want to move one map into another mode. I've not yet tried to move a custom creative world into a survival folder.

So if not in the Region files... where are the game settings stored?

posted a message on Region Mashups.... blending worlds
I've been experimenting with replacing various Region files from different maps into a newly created world... and I'm just curious what's the rhyme or reason for the Region files naming system?

If I create a new world and don't move from the original spawn location, MC generates 4 Region files:

    r.0.0.mca
    r.0.-1.mca
    r.1.0.mca
    r.1.-1.mca

    Of them... only

r.1.0.mca seems to contain enough data to describe the world.

Randomly replacing mca files from different worlds has created a new one with pieces of those maps... though one may have to travel far to find them.

So what's the MC system here? How many blocks does each mca file contain?

The same thing happened to me, since the chunk was deleted there is no way to regenerate the old chunk, so minecraft regened a new one.
But I think in theory... can't MCEDIT copy a chunk from an uncorrupted save and paste it into the corrupted hole?

You'll need to downgrade to an earlier version (Beta 1.5) then force update back to 1.4.7, converting the world twice.
Thanks Tedster.... isn't there a utility that does such conversions? Or did I dream it?
    Quote from qtpriest

make sure you back up your worlds and you put your old world in the same location as your new saves. if it doesnt show up what you can do is go where your world saves are and replace every file in one of your current worlds with the ones from your old map. you can crete a fresh world for this if you like. then check and see if that works.
Thanks QT... but I'd rather not start from scratch. The whole point of going back to this two year old world is just for nostalgia. LOL
