To be fair that would be extremely hard to actually prove. What are you gonna do...stick a bunch of kids in a box, split them in two and observe them for years while one half plays video games and the other doesn't?
The point is, unless you ignore the Nurmberg trials, the only thing you can do with such social studies is to derive correlations from questionnaires which may or may not be answered correctly ("hmm let me see, well yes, I did in fact have violent thoughts on daily basis about bashing someone's head in"), may or may not get you the right representation of groups ("me a nerd who plays video games 5 hours a day? That's silly. I'm in fact a captain of my football team...on Madden") and at the end are just correlations (which every scientist knows is not causation) that may very well be influenced by other factors the researchers have not foreseen.
I'm not biased either way. I'm just saying the phrase "no legitimate evidence shows that it actually causes certain behaviour" is pointless. It will never (hopefully) be proven because we (unless your government is conducting shady experiments) do not experiment on humans.
But that makes those correlations and short term studies all the more important because if in fact it does have a significant effect, how would you ever do anything about it if all you ever can say is "well we can't stick them in a petri dish and subject them to experiments, therefore it's not proven so lets just let it happen".
Often differing social policies between countries are a major consideration when considering reforms in your own. Being able to point to multiple countries that say do not allow video games and also have significantly different teenage behaviours is a correlation hard to ignore (and opposite is also true of course). So if they want to be a petri dish of sorts, let them. Not sure I'd really pick minecraft to do this though if I was a proponent for violence in video games. Really? Minecraft? Lol...

Feb 20, 2015zohar101 posted a message on Notch Responds to "Sellout" CriticismFirst of all nobody is nominating him for sainthood. All the talk since he left was about him as a sellout, and how much he is a hypocrite and so on. Show me this beatification you speak of. At best people understand what he did and know exactly how difficult the community can be and admit that for 2bil you bet your ass they would do the same damn thing. Yes, his sell to microsoft was in essence giving people the shaft for giving him **** after what he felt was an honest attempt to do right by them. Deal with it. He is gone, he hasn't been directly involved in MC development long before this move, and it's time everyone stopped a) talking about himPosted in: News
associating him with the game. He's moved on and so should we.

Feb 20, 2015zohar101 posted a message on Notch Responds to "Sellout" CriticismUm..he never said he wants what is best for minecraft. He said he wanted what was best for himself, which is to divorce himself from the whole thing, and get paid in the process so he never has to feel pressured about any of his projects again. Personally I don't blame him.Posted in: News
You want him to be this saint, just because he's an indie developer. He's not. He's just another guy who loves to program games and doesn't like the hassle of management, success and fame. He took the money and walked away and you can't reconcile with the fact that he wasn't this super moral character you built up in your mind. -

Remember the first Halloween Update? Notch wanted to implement torches that extinguished over time, and higher mob spawning on lower depth levels. But the fans responded with a unanimous "NO!"
That....sounds like an awesome idea. Why the hell didn't he implement this but then tied it to a gamemode like only on hard mode or something. I'd love to try that. -
Jan 27, 2015zohar101 posted a message on Minecraft Boosted Microsoft Sales by $171 Million?Well I think from a business perspective they were actually looking more into doing whatever it took to make windows mobile relevant again and this seemed like a good thing to market on all of their mobile devices. Not to say their gaming sector couldn't use a boost, and certainly that will be its primary source of earning back their investment, but it's windows mobile that's hurting, and windows as a platform is starting to lose ground a lot too on main computers and laptops. Distributing win 10 for free http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/21/microsoft-windows-10-free_n_6517306.html as an upgrade for current windows users is confirming that trend.Posted in: News
Still I would have thought 2bil would have been too much. -

Sep 17, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch. Here's why I do not hold much hope for their support of the modding or realm managing or youtube community in its current format. The only thing in that blog/video was a vague statement how they do not want to alienate the community. A blanket statement that indeed you're expected to be made upon any takeover to pacify the naysayers, and improve PR. If, as they say, microsoft employees are such rabid fans of the game, they predicted community response accurately and easily long before statement of sale was out. They knew about the EULA crap and how it in part precipitated Notch's actions. It's not like any of this was new information.Posted in: News
All of this insecurity and speculation in comments could have been preempted by addressing the issues with one or two sentences (or preferably more in a longer statement). Or by them speaking to Mojang and then Mojang relaying these statements to us. Think how much smoother and more hopeful this transition would have been. I have seen none of that nor do I expect to see it. Mojang attempts to reassure us all since, they as we do, love the game and would love to see the community stay as it is, but they cannot promise anything unfortunately, since obviously nothing was promised/told to them about these issues either.
The best I hope is for pre-microsoft versions to be available as they are, with current mods still legal to use on them. I do not hold out much hope for non-microsoft realm hosting or their allowance of some new bukkit/plugin managing system, let alone free forge/modding done by taking their code apart. In java...language, that microsoft has done just about nothing in. I won't even go into youtube/twitch moneymaking and legal issues/implications.
Microsoft having people angry at them has been their reality for years. I do not think this would even phase them, especially since modding community is comparatively small to all MC users, on all platforms. -
Sep 15, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch.Well this would be a possibility but I can't but think for them ads would still be small potatoes comparatively. From the rep's statement, they acquired it cause it became top online playing game on xbox. But xbox does not support modding of any kind so I don't know that they see this as of particular importance to them. Also, how long they support cross platform is a matter of relative money earnings. Do they get more from direct sales of the game for OSX and iOS or from limiting it to windows + windows mobile + xbox, and get more from people switching/buying platforms that way? It's going to be a number crunching game and if it falls on the latter side, I fully expect there to be a statement about how they want to improve performance but java or apple do not allow them to do this, therefore they're switching to xyz model. I really really hope I'm wrong.Posted in: News

Sep 15, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch.Er...I'm not entirely sure what you mean. If you meant, newcomers to the game will pay, then yes of course they will. The point is that there is no direct monetary reward to keep the community for long term play, and most newcomers pay for the game cause they like the game, not cause they're looking for all the cool modding people do. Mojang was rather unique in that it kept going with development and did not hinder modding even with this reasoning, which is not the usual reasoning for most companies (whose primary end goal is after all, making money). Concern is that this will change, and it's not an unreasonable worry.Posted in: News

Sep 15, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch.Well not really. If they don't care if people stop playing, then they don't care about the long term community as they get no money from them at all. While I do think it's premature to say one way or another what's going to happen, saying that most long term players (and lets face it, a lot of those mod) would stick with open modding and pre-microsoft version isn't ridiculous if microsoft takes any steps to limit modding in any way.Posted in: News

Sep 15, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch. But that is exactly the point. They dropped over 2 billion on this game. What is there to motivate them to support free modding and development of other platforms, when we've already paid what we were gonna pay for the game itself? Those who drop new money will have heard of the game's popularity, not necessarily of its modding. The modding is free and keeps people playing, but since it's not subscription, why would they care about it at all?Posted in: News

Sep 15, 2014zohar101 posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch.Well I can understand where he's coming from so I don't see it as a total betrayal that he decided to leave the running of the company and the spotlight behind. He clearly does not enjoy being a businessman or a public figure. Selling it for a decent chunk of money...well I don't think I can blame him for that either. He does not plan to make it big again, so it's reasonable to assume he's going to get what money he can out of this, that will give him freedom in the future to do what he wants, and how he wants it, without worrying about profits too much. You can blame him all you like for putting himself first in this, but this is his baby and his life and his success and this game has had an amazing game time for money ratio as it is, so ultimately he doesn't really owe you all anything (this all does not include his fellow programmers in mojang and I won't touch that with a 10 ft pole).Posted in: News
I too agree that he could have found a better buyer than Microsoft though (but maybe not for nearly as much money). Microsoft does not have a great history as far as the games they purchased go, and fact is, part of MCs appeal was huge modding community which was freely available and very open as well as emphasis on creativity and not on big graphics or a single platform. None of these things are something that Microsoft has ever excelled in. In fact, I can't think of any of their game successes which were not PC or Xbox only. I just cannot see how Microsoft is going to be terribly interested in keeping the game running well on my mac, while keeping it java based (do they even do anything else java based?) and subscription (of any kind) free for any reasonable period of time. After all, they just dropped a huge chunk of money on it. They'll want big profits in return and they'll push the current developers for it eventually.
I do hope I'm wrong but MC fans do have very good reasons to be concerned. -
Apr 22, 2014zohar101 posted a message on Mod Spotlight - Redstone Paste ModProjectred was cool but it was a lot bigger than just this. I pretty much agree with all this:Posted in: News
Small mods, that do one simple thing, and only that one simple thing, are (for some people, like myself) much better choices than gigantic mods that try to do a lot.
We've already had someone mention the trouble with a giant mod updating versus a small one.
There are other issues on servers -- maybe a server doesn't want a particular style of play/build. Maybe there's a desire to see what people do when there are limits on their building.
Also, I like reinventions of some of the ideas. Sometimes I like the original implementation, but sometimes I like the alternatives. As I can't think of many mods which have absolutely 0 alternatives (especially in the tech tree), I don't see what the big issue is. - To post a comment, please login.

To my knowledge DI has not updated for 1.9, but there are a few mods that can fill in for this like Neat which puts up nameplates (health bars) above the mobs and neutral entities. There are also a few UI mods like SAO UI which completely rework the user interface but among other things include unitframes for you and whatever you're looking at. Easiest is to go on curse, select maps and information category and 1.9 for version and that should give you a fairly short list to work with.

Not all types of rock are the same. In similarity to naturally occurring forms, some are easy to break and some are pretty hard. So likewise, you'll be able to break some easily with wooden pickaxe, and some you'll need an iron one for (at least for any decent speed of digging). You can look up the hardness on the Dr.Cyano's wiki or on a real world wikipedia as I think he tried to stick to real life stone properties.
In minecraft this can lead to somewhat increased difficulty at the start, but really very little once you know to expect it. Any type of rock you do dig up, will function as regular stone when it comes to fashioning tools and weapons.
0
Oh. As majestyc2k1 mentioned, there are other mods by Dr. Cyano. Base Metals is complimentary to Power Advantage, Steam Advantage and Electric Advantage which are tech mods. The other way to get dust is by using a crusher (there's a steam and electric powered version).
Check the wiki http://drcyano.wikidot.com/
If you do not want the tech mods, base metals is compatible with other mods. So for example you could smelt base metals in a tinker's construct smeltery and obtain alloys that way instead and forget the hammer entirely. Pickaxe will still mine these ores just fine.

From having used these on survival I can honestly say ore doubling is not going to be your biggest issue. Maybe for more rare ores, but you'll be working through a crapton of iron and copper as you're building setups and it is almost necessary to have it for these. If there was anything I'd be worried about amount multiplier wise, it'd be the growth chambers, as once they're built, finding and pumping oil becomes far less of a priority as bioplastic suddenly isn't a restrictive material anymore and farming is non-existent.
0
That's great to hear! Thanks

It's on survival so I haven't made it quite that far. Just built the first control unit + chamber just to realize I did not need to expand the energy network for it after all

Doh!

And it's not just the light on. It works and grows plants the entire time like that, without me touching the switch.
As for LED I'm silly, never occurred to me to use it like a light. Will definitely try that.

Not sure if this has been reported or not. Used 3.1.5 version on 1.9. I made a wall of various storage drawers, among them 1x2 and 1x4 drawers. Deposited some cobble into one of 1x2 drawers. Later, accidentally deposited a stack of cobble into an empty 1x4 drawer and now I can't access either drawer that holds cobble and withdraw anything. The rest of the drawers with other items seem unaffected.

Hmm I'm seeing something odd with portable tanks on 1.9. I fill them with oil, break them down to pick them up and when I set them down, they're empty. Aren't portable ones supposed to keep their inventory?

Does the growth chamber control unit + growth chamber need power to run or just water + earth? I put down the power lines but I noticed that even with the electric switch off, and wires clearly no longer attached, the growth chamber still works just fine. Is this intended?
Also a request (for later, I know you're busy updating now), that really can go into any of PA, SA or EA. Some sort of powered light that's able to light up a room would be nice. It seems rather backwards building this huge tech setup and still littering everything with torches. Maybe even several sources depending on the mod. Like kerosene lamps for SA and industrial size lamps or fluorescent lights for EA. Or maybe flashlights that are refilled with batteries instead of torches or even a miner's hat!. Ok i'll stop now
0
Hmm ok I'll either try increasing output/storage or adding alternative sources.
edit: As for the rest of the post, if you read before I edited, disregard, I was derping hardcore with the switch. A gauge of some kind, input/output wise would be great if you can at some point in the future, no rush. Looking forward to Mineralogy and looting bodies
On a separate note, what's the max output of photovoltaic/hydroelectric per unit of each and what is it for steam powered electric generator?
0
In any case there's no rush on this. Since TC is not supposed to spawn its own ores now, adding it some time later after this is cleared up is fine with me as it doesn't need to be present at world creation anymore.
edit:
Just came across this on TC issues list:

Now while this is a different version which does do ore gen, the problem does bear some resemblance to what you were describing as a possibility during ore gen. And it mentions RFTools which I am running (though not the dimensions part) making me wonder if it's TC actually interacting with RFTools that's causing this, and not BM. I'll test this out myself later.
