As for the real question at hand - Slimes spawn in ~1/10 chunks which are chosen by your world seed. In superflat, the only REAL good ways to prevent spawning are half slabs. You can use double half slabs that act like regular blocks but still prevent spawning.

On grass, you can use bonemeal to force tall grass to grow or use torches in literally every square. They can't spawn on blocks that have stuff in them (torches, grass, redstone, etc)

Double stacked half slabs still allow spawning for any mob. I made a spawner that abused that in 1.7 in order to farm endermen (before they flipped out over water, and could still move any block).

OP: This page has a list of all blocks that will prevent mobs from spawning: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Opaque#List_of_things_affected_by_Opacity

Keep in mind that you need one of these blocks on EVERY square in order to prevent spawning. Tiny slimes can still spawn in 1x1 areas, while medium and large slimes require 3x3 areas.

We need to get a mod in here to clean up Shurken and Ninjames's posts. This thread is epic and is going too far off-topic.

OP: Your world is looking amazing so far (on the technical side). You should spend a bit more time trying to make the walls of your warehouse look a little less flat. The block alternations are nice, but the shape is bland. That's my only suggestion for you. Very cool world you've got going.

posted a message on Bird's Eye View [Post pics]

I probably went a wee bit too high, but that's okay. My base is very much a work in progress yet. It's turning into a huge resource dump (and is not supposed to be viewed from the top down in the first place).

That stone area in the top left is a mountain that I finished leveling down to the ground. It was too close to the base, so I cut it down with a good 7-8 stacks of TNT. I still have to shape that area and make it grass again though.

If you want to see a side view of my base thus far, here it is:

You should tell us the technique and maybe we could help.

Your world is legit if you say it is. It's a sandbox game. You do what you want. I would have probably taken the death and dealt with it (and probably learn from it), but that's just me.

posted a message on How do you organize your chests?
Okay, well first of all, let's assume double chests for everything.

    I have:
    - 13 cobblestone
    - 2 stone/stone brick
    - 7 dirt
    - 3 wood
    - 4 sand/sandstone/glass
    - 1 redstone
    - 1 coal/charcoal
    - 1 rare ores
    - 10 mob drops (hostile and slime)
    - 1 for enderpearls in my base
    - 1 enchanted tools
    - 1 food
    - 1 plants
    - 1 stairs/slabs
    - 1 gravel
    - 1 odd blocks
    - 1 nether
    - 1 miscellaneous
    - 30 unused
    - 16 in the End solely for enderpearls (all full now)

I have two storage rooms in my base. One is a quick access storage room, to access any material in the game in small amounts. The other is bulk storage/smelting. When I finally make a real potions room, I'll likely store most of the potions there.

posted a message on Can't stick to a Survival World.
I was the exact same as you. I could never stick to one world after I deleted my world in 1.6 in rage at the minecart booster removal (started it in 1.2). Since then, I've either gotten too bored or I wanted to start over to get things like villages, the End, or jungles in my world.

In order to get myself to stick to a world (my current one), I started blogging my progress (link in sig). I find that this helps keep me focused on the task at hand. I still play challenge or survival maps on occasion, but I mostly focus on one world now. If I'm bored, I play other games until I feel inclined to play Minecraft again.

Moral of the story: find some way to publicly keep track of your world. It will help you stay focused for longer periods of time.

    Quote from Lolligator

If I look for chickens in the swamp near my village, I find about 7 of them with ease when walking around.

I doubt the spawn rate is that low.

It's only really bad on servers because of the mob cap and the amount of chunks that can be loaded at one time.

I'm serious Jcool, just kill them. They WILL respawn eventually (also, you tend to get a lack of diversity with the passive mobs at the start. It seems that a lot of the same type spawn at the start, and it balances out as you kill them).

I didn't just pull the 1/400 number out of my head. What used to occur was that passive mobs would be given a chance to spawn every 1 redstone tick, but in beta 1.8, Notch changed that to give them a chance to spawn every 400 redstone ticks. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that they will spawn every 400 redstone ticks (which would still be pretty fast), but it gives them a chance to.

    Quote from Acke

Yeah i like how grass looks in desert biome, kinda yellowish

The desert looks kind of cool. It's too bad that passive mobs don't spawn in there though.

The jungle grass color looks really good as well, imo.

Yes, slimes can spawn on wool. Slimes cannot spawn on things like glass, leaves (although I don't know if the fast graphics glitch is fixed yet where mobs can spawn on leaves), fences, water, etc. Any solid block with standard properties (dimensions) should work fine.

posted a message on Preventing Mob-Spawning in Enclosed Areas
Go in creative mode and make a room (with a roof). Throw a zombie egg or two in the room and go outside the room and seal it off in all directions. You do not have line of sight to the zombie(s), but you can still hear it/them. You aren't going to find what you are looking for by just searching the mobs page on the Minecraft wiki. As I said before, any entity will play sound files if you are within 16 blocks of it, including mobs.

Also, the Minecraft Wiki isn't going to be 100% correct on everything in the game. Nor does it include all of facts you may be looking for. Read from that website with a grain of salt in hand. There are some things that are just better/easier to test in-game, and this is one of them.

Animals respawn (just very slowly, like 1/400 as often as hostile mobs). Feel free to kill as many of them as you like.

With how easy it is to make torches, I just tend to leave them in the cave (and heck, I don't really even bother sealing off the cave either). Coal is plentiful when mining, and one stack of wood logs (which I always carry when caving) will give you 8 stacks of sticks.

Also, you want to leave the cave lit if you plan on making a hostile mob spawner later on in your world. Trust me, starting early is helpful, as there are a LOT of caves to light up.

1st, pretty thanks for the fast replies.
2nd, to affirm: do mobs actually generate their sounds even if they don't have visual contact with you?

ANY entity will play its sound if it within 16 blocks of you. This includes things like lava, mobs, pistons, etc. Line of Sight doesn't matter at all in this game. Light from torches and other light sources will actually bend around corners (which it obviously doesn't do in reality).

posted a message on why is digging in minecraft SO ADDICTIVE!?!?!?!?
Just play it until you get bored. Trust me, you will eventually. I have these periods where I can easily play the game for 5-6 hours a day if I have the time, and then there are other days where I really hesitate to log in, but when I first started playing Minecraft back in beta 1.2, I couldn't stop thinking about it either.

Minecraft slowly spread through my high school like it was some virus. After school every day, a group of people would get together in the library to just play together. Pretty crazy how popular it was.

posted a message on What music do you listen to when playing Minecraft
Lately I've been listening to the Approaching Nirvana albums that I have on iTunes.

When I'm not listening to that, I tend to listen to the Eminence weekly music podcasts that they post up on YouTube.
