the problem is there are not just a "few bad servers" and the servers you praise are the minority. Each server that offers perks for money does not encourage competitiveness and fun. nothing is fun about working hard and progressing though the game, getting awesome gear so you stand a change. only to have some random person join and do it all in 2 seconds because they payed 20 bucks for a kit. That's not competitiveness, its not fun. And the only way to get rid of the bad servers is to make these rules.
im neutral i pay for a dedicated for friends/family to play, but just pointing out that just about every major MMO does this. there is just a balance between rewarding people who have time to play and casual players who cant play 8 hours a day. getting a /kit that gives you iron gear is equivelant to mining for specific time but its not as OP as having a /kit that gives you an enchanted god set. P2W is not something you can just cover with a blanket statement.
there are players with all the time in the world that just plop around all day, dont contribute to anything except cry and complain... that definately do not deserve all-and-equal. Those of us who play on big servers all know who they are, and they usually outnumber the amount of arrogant people that buy top tier ranks.

it must be built exactly like this where is the lava source and is the ladder. spacing is crucial. lava only travels 3 blocks out. i have a giant mob trap from bedrock to sky and it works perfectly fine.
edit: and yes its on my smp server

oh and uhh you would just need to run redstone from the from under the pressure plates to the other side of the door if you needed to.

if you use that batch file your going to force minecraft to use the 32bit java.
the default location of 64 bit java is in C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe (notice the removal of the (x86) part)
its easier if you rename minecraft.exe to minecraft.jar and use the copy the following into notepad and call it something like "launch.bat":
which is usually more than what is needed. you can change it to -Xmx2048 if you really feel the need to.
edit: to download 64 bit java you would usually need to be using a 64-bit browser otherwise it will just keep giving you the 32bit download unless you use the direct download that is already linked by fooby

windows 7 is actually on par with xp for gaming.
anyone on these forums who tells you "graphics" card doesnt matter on this game is either delusional or very misinformed.
looking up your laptop i believe you have an ATI HD 4200 video card.
other things you can try are: defrag your hd, try turning your antivirus off (active scanners dont play well with this game).

running around deep cave systems poking around lava level = 8 diamonds
strip mining at lvl 12 = 31 diamonds
(i skipped everything that wasnt in my way)
imo strip mining at lava level has always yielded more diamonds. plus if you dont feel like wandering/traveling far away you still have many chances at getting diamonds in supposedly dried up caverns.
in mcedit i actually saw 1 pair of diamonds that was under a block of bedrock and maddening to see all the diamonds i missed by 2 or 3 blocks.

or you can use one of the "delete file recovery" programs out there.
edit: this is assuming you have windows vista/7. the one in xp is pickier on what it monitors.

ie. if your servers ipv4 address is 192.168.0.2 then people connected to your home network will need to type that in their IP box on minecraft.
