I've played on a lot of small, free servers without lag, and that was a top... notch *hark*... experience. :dry.gif:
When did I say a free server can't be without lag? I didn't. I just said a good server is without lag and is not down on a regular basis.
I have no doubt there are some great, free, and public servers. The reddit servers are ultra smooth and incredibly organized/impressive. But they are most definitely loaded up with an insane number of rules to protect against greifers and people out to ruin other people's experience. You essentially have to ask permission to do ANYTHING, and that's just not Minecraft to me.
The ONLY point I am making here is this: A small investment into a community yields a LOT of benefits. If you don't know that, it's because you've probably never invested into a community of anything, and that's too bad. Why insult something you don't have any knowledge of?
Why all this combative anger toward a .75cents a month fee? A high-speed server DOES in fact cost money. Why shouldn't the players kick in for that cost? A great community with players who respect each other and collaborate on an epic scale IS worth an investment, at least to me. It's the tiny investment that generates the high level of respect from each player, and it makes for a great gaming environment.
I've been around the block, I've done the "free" thing for many things, not just Minecraft. It has it's perks, mainly...it's free. But almost without fail, in this world, if you want something of quality, you invest a little bit into it. That's just the way it works.
You can argue all you want for free/public servers, but I know for a fact they have consistent downtime, they have a huge list of rules and anti-griefing headaches to deal with, they could go offline/vanish at any time, and there are a constant stream of disrespectful players who are only out to destroy and ruin the game for others....I've played on enough of those servers to know.
Liberation Nexus is offering an opportunity to play FREE of all those things in a hyper-creative and respectful environment...for 3 litle quarters a month. What's wrong with that?
If you want a top notch ONLINE experience, it's worth .75cents a month. I don't like griefers and I don't like dealing with an absurd amount of rules in place simply to protect against griefers.
.75cents a month eliminates all that, so you can actually PLAY Minecraft. I guess it's just personal preferance.
But you buy a High Def TV, what good is it without games and/or programming to play on it?
It's about the experience.
When you invest into a server/community, you get something special from it. You get a gaming experience FREE of all the griefing and rediculous rules that a free/public server MUST have because, let's face it, when you let anyone onto a server, you have to protect against the lowest common denominator.
On our server, we respect each other. We collaborate and build without worrying about griefers or moronic players messing with out shyte.
It's just a matter of how you want to play Minecraft.
This has become one of my favorite aspects of this entire build. This is not only due to the visual it creates, but because of the depth it adds to the mythology I am beginning to stitch for the people that lived here. As of now, the mythology is mostly a collection of ideas in my head, but once I have completed the build phase of this project, I will be writing up a fully fleshed-out story for the Forgotten Cove of Phronesis.
For new, here is a brief snippet about The Dreamcatcher:
The people of Phronesis rose to power not through fear and dominance, but for their ability to protect the world from the plague of irrational nightmares that seemed to grow worse with every passing age. King Phronesis himself was tormented by the most vile of nightmares and nearly succumb to their dark intoxication. For one-hundred years, he sealed himself away from his people and the world. It was during this time that he constructed the first Dreamcatcher, and his own nightmares were the first to be captured and vanquished. He emerged victorious, his mind alive with the clarity of Reason. From that day forth, the people of Phronesis fought the battle against the land's irrational nightmares, imprisoning them deep within their mountain, and so began the thousand-year rule of the King Phronesis... a time of unrivaled peace, innovation, and productivity.
OK, time for the screenshots!
Here are some BEFORE screens of the space (after it had been "gutted" and smoothed:
And here is The Dreamcatcher chamber fully realized:
Creative Note: The center of the spiral at the bottom actually drops through the bottom of the world.
Creative Note: The glass cubes hanging from the ceiling hold vanquished nightmares, more on these later!
This is the chamber where the first nightmares of King Phronesis are held captive:
As a fun sidenote...one of the major headaches working on this project was... LAVA POCKETS! Serious pain:
Wow. It looks amazing. Maybe don't make it that squarish?
Thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind when I do the finishing round on everything....add in more organic sculpts etc. and soften the edges. It's only at 40% or so still. Appreciate the feedback.
What most people do is bump the post with the newest ones as sometimes people don't reread the first post, and also place it in the first post for new viewers.
Great work btw I love the start of that fortress so far!
Thanks....working away on it right now, actually :smile.gif: Adding some really unique elements.
And that makes perfect sense with the posting of updates, cool.
I like the design work on the front. I'd say....maybe add two shorter structures in a much more toned down but complimentary style connected on either side of it. It's looking like it wants to spread out a bit.
Others have suggested making it wider, I agree. But also, breaking it up a bit with some different material would be good, give it some dimension and pop.

Have you ever played on a paid server?
Until you have, maybe you should accept that you just don't know any better :smile.gif:

Cool, I wasn't sure what the protocol was. Is it OK to bump the topic once I edit the original post, do you know?

As stated above, the plan is to transform the ENTIRE mountain into a scuplted fortress.
This is one side of the mountain BEFORE any work had been done (I was still using the standard MC textures for these shots):
Here is the area prepped (Took forever!):
Here is one of the column structures finished:
And FINISHED! (Well, mostly, there will still be a lot done in terms of landscaping, village housing, etc.
More coming soon!
