From what I understand mobs spawn in/on water, so placing a source block directly below the spawner should push the mobs to the edge where they will fall down and enter the trap faster.
Nice trap, I will be sure to try it when I find a zombie/skeleton dungeon next. Now we just have to work out if this can kill pesky spiders too.
I have been trying to get a server to work for the past week, so I can play with my friends.
Firstly, the router is not forwarding ports (Buffalo Airstation), so I am awaiting a reply from them about that.
Today I tried to connect using the local IP (192.168.11.X), which has worked to some extent but for some unknown reason it is not working fully.
Me and my flatmate both own a PC and a laptop/netbook each. Only certain devices can connect to servers running on a different device, over the network. What is more strange is that all of the security related products (McAfee, Peerblock) are the same on my PC and netbook.
My PC: Cannot connect to any server, except itself.
My netbook: Can connect to his PC, and itself, but not my PC.
His PC: Can connect to my netbook and itself, but not my PC.
His laptop: Can connect to his PC and my netbook, but not my PC.
Why are some working but not others?
I have tried disabling McAfee, PeerBlock and windows firewall (which is not running), on the PC.
The IP's on the network are static, not that it would make a single bit of difference when it will not work from the first attempt (I understand that should they change at a later date, when the lease runs out it would stop it from working).
All that you have suggested about forwarding ports has already been done, and I even changed the IP to check my PC as well, which also had the same problem.
I am not sure how Hong Kong works with static or dynamic IPs, but for now that is not the issue.
The port is open when I check.
Also, I have tried running a server on my PC. I have the same problem, can connect with localhost and not with the IP and my friend cannot connect with either.
My house mate has just set up a server on his PC, which works fine when he connects using "localhost" on his PC (the client and server are on the same PC), but it is not possible for him to connect to the IP of our internet connection. I cannot connect to the server using both "localhost" and the IP of our internet connection.
Using a port checker, from his PC and mine, the port is open (25565 on both UDP and TCP).
It gives the error:
"Connection refused: connect"
How can we fix this so that it works? The router is a Buffalo Air Station, should anyone have the same and be running a server please let me know how you have forwarded the ports, just to check it is set correctly on the router.
My netbook BSODed whilst playing Minecraft on fullscreen (first time it has happened), now it will not recognise the world which I was playing on, even though the save file is still in the saves folder.
I have just quickly gone through the first 8 pages on the support board, and then tried searching, about this issue, as I have seen it mentioned before, but I could not find any mention of it now.
How can I get Minecraft to recognise the world? It is important as since 1.2 came out newly generated worlds give me 2-5 FPS, but the old map has 10-15, so I have to get it working to be able to play until Notch sorts the performance problems.

Just a proof of concept:
The middle minecart could also be a gravel stack, like the first, so the only thing griefers could do is land on that first piston.
There is a gravel refill at the back which could be inside or outside the vault.

I have tried to replace the level.dat, but the error occured again immediately after the world generated.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

See if they have your model of router on there. I would help further, but you have not said the model number or brand of the router.
Also, in the future ask in the support section.

Still unable to get my PC to connect to the server on my friend's PC.
EDIT:
Out of desperation I tethered it to my iPhone, to get my PC outside of the network, as it is the only thing wired into the router.
It worked.... so it seems that my router is a pile of

Does anyone have any idea why we are having all of these issues with the server?

I have not tried it yet, but this should work. My old save which was corrupted after a crash got deleted.

Still not working.
One of our friends has brought his Dell laptop over (Win 7, 64-bit) and it works with the server.

I am not too sure how I will be able to tell if it has been updated or not.
