Over the years, Minecraft has grown from a simple building game to an epic sandbox survival game. Starting with just a few blocks, it has grown to add many new mobs, items, and tools that allow players to make and do all kinds of creative things. It is with this in mind that I propose a new mob that I think would contribute to the spirit of Minecraft.
And it doesn't hurt that this is a water-based mob, something that Minecraft doesn't have much of.
(Note: All ideas are open for tweaking based on other people's ideas, including the name. I'm not fond of the name Fanfish)

Description
The Fanfish is a water dwelling hostile mob that resides in deep waters such as an Ocean biome. It is a very unique mob, with it's own special attack that is different than any other mob and a unique item that it drops when killed. In another first for Minecraft, it actually has two separate models, depending on if your graphics are set to Fast or Fancy.
Statistics
Spawn Criteria
Must spawn in at least a 7x7x7 area of water
Size
2x2x1 Blocks (LxWxH)
Health
- Easy: 4 Hearts (8 HP total)
- Normal: 6 Hearts (12 HP total)
- Hard/Hardcore: 8 Hearts (16 HP total)
Damage
All Difficulties: 0 (Uses an indirect attack, see the Attack section)
Images
When I was doing concept ideas for this mob, I got inspired to build a scale 3D model of it using Autodesk 3DS Max. I'm not a very good pixel artist, so I would love it if you guys downloaded them and showed me some coloring ideas.
Keep in mind that these images are larger than what you would see in the game. Each square that makes up the mob's body represents one pixel of what the final model would be.

Behavior
Movement
- Stays 6-12 blocks beneath the water's surface
- If not actively pursuing a player it will randomly make a whirlpool for a few seconds before moving to a new area.
- Has the same player detection range as the Spider, but cannot see through solid blocks
- Tries to stay underneath the player, backs away if it cannot
Attack
- Creates a Whirlpool, sucking the player down and trying to drown them
- Cannot move while making a Whirlpool
- Whirlpools last a minimum of 4 seconds (If player is caught in whirlpool it stays until the player dies, escapes, or kills the mob)
The Whirlpool
- The Top, which starts at the surface of the water and takes up a 5x5x2 area
- The Middle, starting directly underneath the top and taking up a 3x3x2 area
- The Bottom, which is directly below the middle and above the Fanfish. Takes up a 1x1x2 area
When you get caught in a whirlpool, the swirling and pressure causes you to drown faster than if you were just underwater. The following numbers are based off of the current game statistics of the Air Meter lasting 15 seconds and players taking approximately 2 damage (1 full Heart) per second when drowning.
- Normal Drowning: Air Meter (15 seconds) | 2 damage () per second
- Whirlpool (Easy): Air Meter (12 seconds) | 3 damage () per second
- Whirlpool (Normal): Air Meter (9 seconds) | 3 damage () per second
- Whirlpool (Hard/Hardcore): Air Meter (6 seconds) | 4 damage () per second
Interacting With a Fanfish
Avoiding
- Build Bridges over where they can spawn so you don't have to fight them.
- Use Boats (Fanfish can only destroy a boat if it stays in the center of a whirlpool for 3 seconds or by the boat changing course from the whirlpool and crashing
- Stay in shallow water (Due to the 7x7x7 area requirement)
Fighting
- Swim to middle of whirlpool
- Look down
- Attack the Fanfish, which will cause it to temporarily stop creating a whirlpool after it takes 2 damage
Drop
Fan Scale
The Fan Scale can be used to make a Water Breathing potion, returning a once available potion back into the game. (removed, as Pufferfish now create this potion)
It is also used to create the Fan Block, which is described in the next section. My current thought is that this item would have a drop rate of about 33%. Here is a picture of the Fan Scale, courtesy of thisguy1045.
Crafting Recipe
My Idea
The Feather represents the Fan Scale
Once I get a picture of the the Fan Block I will update the crafting recipe. I'm also interested in hearing alternatives for recipes.
Behavior
The Fan Block is powered by Redstone, and is placed like a Piston. One face of the block is where the air comes from. The Fan Block blows four blocks in the direction that the block is facing. These air currents can be mixed similar to water paths coming from multiple water source blocks. They have a maximum range of 4 blocks, and any solid block obstructs the fan.
To go into a bit more detail, the Fan Block actually creates four "Wind" blocks in front of it when powered. These blocks are invisible, like air, and cannot be broken. They have special interaction with Water (possibly Lava) that will be covered below.
Pushing Entities
Items: Can be pushed 4 blocks in any direction except down (because of gravity). This can be used to make item elevators or to move items uphill. Experience is not affected.
Mobs/Players: Mobs and Players interact with the block differently than items do. There are multiple ways they can interact with the Fan Block depending on how many fan blocks are affecting them, if they are running towards or away from a Fan Block, and if there is a Fan Block above or below them.
Land Movement
- Fan Block Below
- Jumping off of a Fan Block allows the mobs to jump an extra block high.
- Lowers Fall Damage by 8 blocks (If you land on it)
- Fan Block Above
- Restricts Jumping to Half a Block
- Running Against Fan Block
- One Fan: No speed reduction
- Two Fans (One on top of the other, both facing player): 25% speed reduction
- One Fan: 25% speed reduction
- Two Fans: 50% speed reduction
- On Normal Land
- On Ice/Jumping
- Running With Fan Block
- One Fan: No speed increase
- Two Fans (One on top of the other, both facing player): 25% speed increase
- One Fan: 25% speed increase
- Two Fans: 50% speed increase
- On Normal Land
- On Ice/Jumping
Elytra Movement
The wind from the Fan Block has a large impact on Elytra movement. Flying within the 4 "wind" blocks can drastically alter the Elytra's course. If you fly over a Fan Block blowing air upwards will give you a large amount of vertical lift, which will help people fly further without needing to land or use Fireworks. If one is to your right and blowing on you, it will push you to the left and vice versa. One above you and pointing down can cause you to enter a nosedive.
This allows people better methods to gain height and can allow people to make obstacle courses or other fun things like indoor "skydiving"
Fan Blocks in Water - The Current Block
The Fan Block has another use (credits to Bob Fizzle and bebe33) when placed in water. It becomes a Current block, acting as a jet that pushes the water, or in certain cases, pulls it. However, there are many different ways it can be used in water, so consider this section under construction for now.
Solid Water
The Fan Block will not displace Water Source Blocks the way it will flowing water, but will push entities and items through Water Sources.
Flowing Water
The Red Wool indicates the location of the Water Source Block, and the White Wool is any flowing water. Now let's throw a Fan Block, which is represented by a non-cooking Furnace. the front of the Furnace indicates the front of the Fan Block:
Now let's power it up (Cooking Furnace represents being powered):
So basically, any flowing Water that comes into contact with the wind generated by a powered Fan Block basically acts as if it were obstructed by a solid block and redirects as it normally does. It can even prevent water from falling down vertically, acting as an alternative to using a Sign or a Ladder.
Here is the same set up with multiple powered Fan Blocks:
But if the Wind made from a Fan Block is stopped by a solid block (our Gold Block in the picture below), then it behaves as expected and the wind stops there:
So it is fairly simple to remember the hierarchy here. Water obstructs nothing, Wind obstructs Water, and Solid obstructs both.
That's basically my take on this mob at this point in time, I appreciate any feedback or changes you guys think I should make. And as I said, feel free to give your designs of the mob, the drop, or the Fan Block if you want. Thanks for reading.

Swords need to be better. This mod subtly gives the player complete color customization of their swords, providing a selection of infinite colors to choose from! It fits in with Minecraft gameplay, adding a mechanic that doesn't over complicate the game, or change the medieval feel!
That mechanic is called alloy gilding, applied to your very own blade! This means, no matter what type of sword you are using [wood, stone, iron, gold, or diamond], it can be gilded with a different colored alloy that fits your style!
Gilded swords are not made with a Crafting Bench, but with the implemented Forge block. The Forge allows you to input the sword of your choice and the alloy of your choice, choose what part of the sword you want to gild [Blade, Hilt, or Handle], and then your sword will begin gilding, much like a furnace cooks steak. The alloys are made in the new Mixer block, which allows you to choose exactly what color you'd like, combine it with an iron ingot, and create your very own colored alloy.
The Mixer allows you to choose your exact color by taking your inputted dyes, splitting them up into RGB (red, green, and blue) levels, and opening up a color selection window. Here you will be able to paste a hexadecimal color code and view your output color in a display area. A hexadecimal color code is a 6-digit code that represents a specific color. Here is a hex color picker you could use with BladeCraft. Once you have selected your color, and turned it into an alloy, the RGB level required to fill that certain color will decrease, effectively using up your initially input dyes.
Craft recipes for both blocks are spoiler'd below!
=
Fun Fact:
The number of color combinations that can be applied to a sword has greatly increased from prior updates. With our hex code system, each alloy can be 1 of over 16 million colors! With the ability to place three different alloys on the Blade, Hilt, and Handle of a sword, the exact number of combinations is 4,722,366,482,869,645,213,696. Mind blowing.
Plans include creating a system that allows every mod and every texture pack to plug-in to this mod. With the system that has been coded, all that is needed for Mod Support or a Texture Pack Patch is a few easy overlay textures for each item desired to be gilded. This part of the mod will not come out upon the first release, but will likely be in a later update.
Before this system is created, there are plans to increase the types of items/tools in Minecraft that can be gilded, so there's a greater range of customization within the entire inventory.
Requires Minecraft Forge, found here. Download the latest version, which should be at the top of the list! If you want to find out more about Minecraft Forge and their forums, click here.
-Simply download Forge's installer, and install the client version!
-To install the BladeCraft mod itself, drag the complete .jar file into the "mods" folder that shows up after Forge has set up.
I'd like to hear back from you players out there, so we can take this mod in a direction you all like! Please report back after playing and tell me what you like, what you don't, is it too simple? too complex? more content? Thanks!

DarkHax and Ghost - for creating BladeCraft and updating it back and forth up to this point. Both have put up with my relentless ideas and new suggestions, and added their own along the way. One way or another, we get it done. Thanks guys!
All of you! - for supporting and helping to shape and change BladeCraft for the better!
The team behind this mod has known each other for quite some time, as we've developed several mods and worked together during events like ModJam. Development for BladeCraft is always flipping between us three from update to update, and we each have our own skills in mod development.
Ghostrec - lead developer this update (BladeCraft 2.0)
Upon being asked what he specializes in, Ghost replied "I do stuff, with code stuff." This pretty much sums up what he's done with this most recent update, turning all of our ideas into a reality. He's pretty incredible and intuitive with his code (though I'm an art guy, so what do I know) and he gets it working exactly the way we need it to.
DarkHax - secondary developer this update (BladeCraft 2.0)
When I asked Dark what he specializes in code-wise, he replied with "I specialize in letting others do all the heavy lifting."
Though this may have been true for this update, Dark provided some great ideas, and has put a ton of work in on past releases of this mod. You can tell by now, these guys are pretty humble in the way they talk about their work.
ThisGuy - author, texture artist, and modeler
I was the guy with the idea behind this mod, though it has changed since the beginning, with many of the ideas coming from the other two. I've also done all of the item, GUI, and model textures, as well as the modeling itself. I would say I specialize in item and block textures, and then in the graphics that make everything look nice. Fun fact about me - almost all of the art I do is accompanied by a cup of coffee. (:
All three of us enjoy giving back to the MineCraft community, so we have made this mod open source, with the hopes that another aspiring dev out there can learn a thing or two! If you'd like to take a look at it, click here.

My suggestion to the Minecraft world, is the ability to add a title and specific color customization to a sword.
The idea is to create and add another fun and exciting challenge for those who want to customize their sword. It doesn't upset any balance and is not mandatory to players who do not wish to do so, but provides the way to get that "perfect sword".
Forging your very own sword!
Name and color custom swords would be made with all 5 sword materials: wood, stone, iron, gold, and diamond, adding customization to every sword possible in the game, for even more blade color!
Adding Color:
The color would be added through the use of dyes to the leather handle and cross-gaurd of the sword, as well as an inset gem to the pommel and cross-guard! An already crafted sword would be placed into the the Anvil, first put through with a dye, and then put through again with an inset gem.
Gems/metals to inset on the sword:
Nether Quartz = white
Iron = silver
Diamond = light cyan
Lapis Lazuli block = blue (block because Lapis is used for dye)
Ender Pearl = purple
Emerald = green
Glowstone dust = light yellow
Gold = gold
Blaze Rod = orange
Redstone dust = red
Obsidian = black
Insetting the gem:
Enchantment/Durability:
A fully colored sword (dyed hilt, inset gem) would have higher enchantability. This means that the normal enchant levels for that sword would bear a greater and more valuable enchant.
A forged sword would have greater durability than the sword of it's material counterpart.
Name Your Sword:
Since 1.4 the Anvil Block has been added. One of its main features is naming tools. Whether or not the whole idea was inspired by this thread, it is a huge triumph that the aspect of naming tools has found its way into Minecraft. You saw it here first folks!
For the name, you would simply use the Anvil and a bit of XP. This idea stays here because this suggestion existed before the Anvil even came out! Here is an image showing what hovering over the titled sword in the inventory might look like:
Dungeons - Legendary Swords!
Around 5 to 7 already enchanted, colored, and titled swords would become loot in dungeon chests. Much like records, these swords would become well known, and could differ with better or worse enchantments. To keep the balance however, finding one would be EXTREMELY RARE. Submitted ideas for these:
moochfloatjr - Blaze's Wrath: orange hilt, redstone gems, found with Fire Aspect I - III
moochfloatjr - Dungeonmaster: grey hilt, emerald gems, found with Smite I - II, Bane of Arthropods I - II
LegoMyLego27 - The Undead Destroyer: black hilt, quartz white gems, found with Smite II - IV
The_Miner_Nick - Harbinger of Wealth: orange hilt, diamond gems, found with Looting I - III
F1am3 - Suns Fury: orange hilt, glowstone gems, found with Fire Aspect I-II, Smite I - II
BioShock_Rules - Annihilator: red hilt, iron metal inset, found with Sharpness III-VI, Fire Aspect I-II
Flamedude166 - Flame's Might: red hilt, obsidian gem, found with Fire Aspect II, Knockback II, +1 enchant
NitrogenSnow - Hurricane: grey hilt, quartz white gem, found with Knockback IV, Smite II
Ampulugator - Slapstick: all brown, found with Unbreaking III, Knockback II, Sharpness I, low durability
Vroqren's submissions:
Defiance: black hilt, iron metal inset, found with Sharpness I-IV, Fire Aspect I-II
Arachnophobia: gray hilt, redstone gems, found with Bane of Arthropods I-IV, Knockback I-II
BioHazard: black hilt, gold metal inset, found with Smite III-IV, Fire Aspect 0-II
Excaliber: blue hilt, gold metal inset, found with Sharpness II-IV
Nether: red hilt, gold metal inset, found with Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III
End: black hilt, obsidian gems, found with Sharpness V, Bane of Arthropods I, Smite I
Masamune: black hilt, gold metal inset, found with Sharpness II, Bane of Arthropods I-II, Smite I-II
Juggernaut: white hilt, iron metal inset, found with Unbreaking III.
Sanctumguard: white hilt, gold metal inset, found with Smite V
Inset Effects [Optional]:
Each inset item, described above, will give the end result of the sword a differed effect, depending on the item!
[Iron] +20 durability, -1 damage against Iron Golem
[Diamond] +30 durability
[Lapis Lazuli block] ???
[Ender Pearl] +1 health when using enderpearl, -1 damage against Enderman and Ender Dragon
[Emerald] 30% chance of Looting I
[Glowstone dust] ???
[Gold] +10 durability, -1 damage against Zombie Pigmen
[Blaze Rod] 10% chance of fire on each hit, -1 damage against Blaze
[Redstone dust] ???
[Obsidian] 30% chance of blocking any given attack
Achievement and Additional Kill Status [Optional]:
"To Forge A Sword" could be added to the achievements section, only completed after fully crafting (with colored hilt and inset gem), enchanting, and titling a sword.
Forged Swords come with a new kill status that simply states: [Name1] was slain by [Name2]'s sword [sword name].

This idea's not too bad, I'm always up for some more aesthetic additions.
Would the durability increase/stay the same/decrease?
Would enchantment levels increase/stay the same/decrease?
It would be nice to get a visual of what you're talking about too!
With a bit more detail, I would give this simple idea full support. I realize it isn't needed, but good looking items can always be an improvement.
1
I don't want to get into the myriad of problems with this statement, but I'm going to anyways.
The whole idea of the Suggestions forum is to suggest an idea and get feedback, then change and update your idea until it is somewhat plausible and balanced and supported by lots of people. This attitude anywhere in the Minecraft community isn't going to get you very far, and it certainly won't "revolutionize the community" any time soon.
Secondly, opinions can't be wrong because that's the entire point. It is how the other person sees it, how other people view the situation, problem, or idea. Just because no one agrees with you, it does not mean they are all wrong.
1
On the idea, I agree with the above. A new structure in the Nether that is extremely similar to Nether Fortresses with a mob that roams and guards.. It's already been done (or will be done once 1.8 hits) inside the realm of Minecraft with the new underwater fortresses and its mob the Guardian.
Because this is all very similar, I would suggest you drop this structure part, and really bring out the bit about the block.
"Ragna Rock" is a very solid idea because it would indeed give map-makers some more leeway in their material usage, as well as make very durable redstone doors and machines. I suggest you fine-tune the post to explain all the benefits of this new block because it seems like it could fit nicely, if done correctly.
1
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm huge on aesthetics, and I completely agree with you. This little visual bug has been there since the beginning, and I'm sure it's a very small fix in the code.
I support this idea, though I don't think it will get very far simply because it doesn't matter to a lot of people; most players don't really NEED this.
Anyways, that's my two cents.
2
My statement: Although Jeb has tweeted that this will not be added to vanilla, it could still be a great mod. So please, read through before you comment!
Emerald Tools/Armor:
The idea, obviously, is the ability to craft Emerald Tools and Armor
Ever since I heard Emeralds were being added to Minecraft, I thought they would be made into tools, which got me really excited!
The only functionality for Emeralds at the moment is trading. The trading aspect, although it cool, is way too expensive. Finding one Emerald is hard as it is, and then trading it off for a simple pair of Iron Leggings makes it useful for nothing but decoration.
Emeralds fit in somewhere between Iron and Diamond, Iron having a hardness of 4-5, Emerald being 7-8, and Diamond being a 10 on the Moh's Scale.
Trading:
Wearing Emerald Armor would increase trade skill. This means you could get better deals with NPC's when trading with Emerald Armor on. Emeralds have always been linked to Villagers - trading and their eye color are a few points. Wearing a product of emeralds while trading would show you support them, their cause, and what they're all about.
Crafting:
Emerald tools as well as armor would be crafted the same way. Here are the pictures of what Emerald Tools would look like:
Here are the pictures of what Emerald Armor would look like:
Number of Uses on Tools:
There is a HUGE gap in the durability range of tools that are in Minecraft at the moment. Here is the list of durability as of right now:
Gold: 33 Uses
Wood: 60 Uses
Stone: 132 Uses
Iron: 251 Uses
Diamond: 1562 Uses
Durability on Armor:
Here is the durability of armor as of now:
Leather: 7 defense points
Gold: 11 defense points
Chain: 12 defense points
Iron: 15 defense points
Diamond: 20 defense points
Some pictures that show armor in use!

Enchantment on Tools and Armor:
Once again, there is a LARGE gap in enchantability with the tools and armor that are in the game right now. Here is a list of the enchantability rate:

Some other suggestions:
-NPC's could wear and hold these items, as they are directly related to Emeralds. Those who trade armor could be wearing armor, and those who trade tools, hold tools, etc. This would provide an even better way to identify who is trading what!
Overall, Emerald Tools are at a middle level between what is in Minecraft right now. Gold Tools have extremely low durability and high enchantment. Diamond Tools have extremely high durability and an OK rate of enchantability.
Emerald Tools have a average range of durability, and an average range of enchantability.

But honestly, this doesn't make any sense. Do you think stuffing 64 loaves of bread into one's mouth is a good idea?
Also, just having the mouth next the armor slots looks a little silly.
And how long does it take to leave the inventory screen and simply munch on a food item? Seconds. There is no need for this.
Lastly, this in effect, disables the entire food bar, as anyone could simply drop 64 items of food into the mouth slot and keep filling it up.
No support.

Also, I think Mojang was planning something with villagers, but never got around to it. They have those lightning strikes when you make them angry, don't they? Seems like there had been a plan for some sort mechanic, and this suggestion seems to fit that perfectly!
Some other ideas could be:
- A certain new sound track could be created for Minecraft when the player enters within a certain radius of the village, with common sounds of the town (talking, banging, various "people" sounds), or even just a different sort of music specifically for villages.
- Villagers hold items that correspond with their respective job, however, they would not drop that item if killed. This would add to the visual sight of what each villager does, and give them the look that they have a reason to be moving from place to place.
- Perhaps a small number of villagers could have a trained dog or cat in their home that follows their owner villager. This combines other mobs together, and once again, adds to that ambiance.
