Efficiency/speed of cobblestone generation is definitely the most important part of a cobblestone generator. If it doesn't work well then who cares about it? Any time you save setting it up because it has a small footprint is cancelled out by the time wasted when the cobblestone you mine goes into the lava.

Also, I am currently in the process of building a huge compound out of entirely smooth stone (and like, other ****, but pretty much no cobblestone, I think it makes your place look like ****), hence cobblestone generators being something I'm interested in (though I don't use mine, its too slow compared to mining smooth stone, though if it were 100% efficient, the convenience factor might be worth it).

If you're doing it for just aesthetics, I get that, but cobblestone is actually a fairly valuable resource if you build a lot, but as far as cobblestone generators are concerned, the best one is either the one that generates the most amount of cobblestone per unit time, or the one that looses the least amount to lava.

Though honestly those are probably going to be the same generator...

Ah, I've been looking for a good cobblestone generator thread to ask this question.

Currently I have a 5x5x3 cobblestone generator similar to what someone posted earlier in this thread. I've noticed that for every ten or so cobblestones I mine, 2 (or so) of them are lost in the lava flow, so it's only 80% efficient.

It's probably impossible to make a 100% efficient cobblestone generator due to the fact that the lava has to be adjacent to the cobblestone in order for the cobblestone to be made in the first place, coupled with the fact that when you mine a cobblestone block, the miniblock generated moves in a fairly random initial direction. Since one of the possible directions would be straight into lava (due to the aformentioned required lava positioning)... Well, 100% efficient is probably too much to hope for

My question is essentially, is there a generator better than the one I currently have? For reference, this is essentially identical to the one I currently have.

Notably, this design has two cobblestone mining locations to reduce/avoid lag time between cobblestone generations. Mine also has obsidian shielding behind any place I could reasonably hit while digging, though that's something that is applicable to essentially any cobblestone generator. Also, mine has the corner-most brick piece removed, which due to the current water bug (allowing water in a corner to effect the corner orthogonal (not adjacent) to it) allows the cobblestone miniblocks to be deposited into my inventory without me having to move/stop mining, though this too (or a variation on the theme) could probably be applied to many/any of the other cobblestone generators.

tl;dr, what's the most efficient cobblestone generator, that is, has the fewest cobblestones lost to lava (or alternately, has the highest rate of cobblestone collected per minute)?

Has anybody put any research into this? I'd experiment with it if I didn't have to much to worry about with college and **** for the next few weeks to have any time to actually play minecraft. (Though really I should stop looking at the forums, they aren't making me want to play it any less...)

I've had this problem too. I just made it so that one of the gates was powered and I used the others. It's a terrible solution though :/
