posted a message on MAP MEGA-THREAD!
I'm noticing many map ideas, and I realized that to prevent the problem of a LOT of overly suggested topics regarding maps, I tool the time to make this mega-thread.

Please only post map ideas to here (unless it HAS to be super-detailed).

Idea's are welcome, and if they appear to be balanced/good, I will add it with your name to show it was your idea.

Thank you for reading, and here are a few I made/found.

    MAP MARKER IDEAS

    MAP MARKER Sven_The_Slayer

A craft-able block that when placed would be guaranteed to place a bright red dot on any map that comes across it would be an easy way to mark locations that you want to get back to and others to know about.

    DRAWING ON MAPS Nathanos

The ability to use a Quill (With Ink Sac) on a map, and then have the ability to draw on the map and do what ever you want with it (but each map would remember it's specific Overlay) and with each colour of dye you could create different colours

The ability to "free" draw on maps could add alot of possibilities, even having notes and what not.

    PAINT-ABLE ICONS Mantonio

First, to paint icons on a map you need a brush. This can be made with a stick, a feather, and the dye of whatever colour you want to use. To offset the rarity of some dyes, maybe brushes could be made in stacks of two.

    :: :|: ::
    :: :feather: ::
    :: :Red: ::

Assume the red wool block there is red dye.

With a map in your hands, right clicking makes it fill the screen (perhaps pausing the game if you're in singleplayer, perhaps not) and brings up a sidebar full of icons. An icon of a house (useful for settlements), an icon of a pick (mines), a skull and crossbones (dungeons) and maybe some others. Once you select a symbol, another box pops up listing the possible colours. You can only select the colours you have in your inventory though. With the colour now chosen, you simply drag the icon to where on the map you want it attached, and there you go!

    FLAG MARKERS Regular Hexahedron

A placed flag would create a visible dot on maps over its position. The dot's color is the same color as the flag; red flag creates a red dot, pink flag creates a pink dot, etc. If you remove the flag, the dot vanishes (when you explore that area again just like with terrain changes). If you add a flag, a new dot appears.

Multiple flags too close to each other (in the same 8x8 area on the map) would show up as a single dot on the map, taking the color of the most recent flag placed there.

It's the map user's choice whether to see flag dots or not! Right clicking while holding a map would make all flag dots disappear. Right clicking again would bring the flag dots back.

    TYPES OF MAPS

    TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS Themohawkninja

I would like to see a diferent type of map. This different type of map in a solid color and displays colored lines that represent height. Every five lines a bold line with a number would show up. That number is the number of blocks above sea level (64).

    LIGHT-DYNAMIC MAPS CaduceusGUILT

Combining a map with redstone will create a light dynamic map. When it's night, it will create dark areas to represent areas that are dark, and places that have light will be lit up.

    TECTO-ANALYSIS MAPS heyitszeer

    Tectoanalysis Maps:
The first thing to do is craft a Tectoguage:
    :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
:Iron: :Portabella: :Iron: = :stair: 1 Tectoguage
    :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:

    (:Portabella: = Compass)

The tectogauge is then crafted like with paper like a map.

Opening the map at the entrance to the mine will scan downward from the player's Y position and map any air. The lighter the pixel, the closer to the surface the air is.

    COPYING MAPS

    COPYING MAPS iglock

This would work the same way as making a cake- i.e. when you craft a duplicate map, the original map is left in the crafting grid.

PRINTING PRESS Captain_TomAN94 (recipe), arirish (how it works).

    :RedShroom: = redstone

    :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
    :Iron: :RedShroom: :Iron:
    :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:

Use the Printing Press for duplication. You'd put a written book, or a filled/partially-filled map in the left input slot, an empty book or map in the middle slot, probably some ink or something in a 'fuel' slot, and bingo, a duplicate appears in the output.

    ==========================================================================
    PLACING MAPS

    PLACE-ABLE MAPS Annunaki

It would only show what the map did, and would not be able to update (although, it could be possible to pop the map out to update it)

And, building on that idea, when placing several map-paintings next to each other, they could merge, making it possible to have a real grand picture of the local map.

Wnieuwstraten - Maps should be placeable on any side of a block.

PLACE MAPS ON WALLS WITH SIGNS cba123

Step 1: Fill a map within an area.

Step 2: Combine the map with a sign in your inventory or a crafting table.

Step 3: Mount it on a wall or place it at an intersection.

VARIABLE SIZED MAPS ON WALLS iMustBBlind

My idea is to be able to craft a painting with an explored map inside. Instead of using cloth in the middle you can use a map. Then you can put the map inside the painting on a wall, and then the map will be shown on the wall. Also the larger the space on a wall, the larger the map inside the painting will be. The larger the map on the wall, the higher the pixel resolution will be. Please give feedback if you think this is a good idea.

OTHER MAP IDEAS (not enough to make a new section)

    MAP CRAFTING TABLE as4sluke
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/385785-map-crafting-table/

Our idea is to introduce a map crafting block, sort of like a crafting table, but specifically for maps. This will have a custom interface for naming and setting the zoom level on creation; duplicating the map and even other features such as editing labels and such onto an existing map.

    ATLAS Regular Hexahedron
    http://www.minecraft...entered-on-you/

The general idea of an atlas is to have a large book which can store multiple maps. One idea ([credit name, link to thread for discussion]) would be a book you can hold in your hands and behaves similarly to a map, but the image would be centered on the player's location and moves as the player moves. This atlas map would not record new terrain data, but would instead use data from all the maps the player has in his/her inventory, showing blank paper for areas not yet mapped, and giving newer maps priority over older ones is there is a conflict (if terrain has changed between the creation of two overlapping maps). This would allow the player to navigate over large distances without having to switch maps, and does not consume or destroy maps as some alternative ideas do.

    MAP STARTING POSITIONS Sven_The_Slayer

When you craft a map you automatically start mapping in the center. This is fine if you want the map to just be of surrounding areas. If you want to make multiple maps to span a large area it will be very hard to find the center of the next map in order to decrease over lapping maps.

So what if the crafting recipe was tweaked a little. It would still be made of 8 paper but the location of the compass would determine the start location for the map, being center, top, bottom, left, right and the four corners as well.

    MAP GRIDS Themohawkninja

I personally was thinking of a grid that could be placed on the map so you could more easily see what was where. It would still involve you memorizing coordinates, but the coordinates would make it much easier to find your base, caves, etc.

    LABELING MAPS CaduceusGUILT

Being able to label different maps, so that when you hover over it in your inventory, it displays the label.

    AUTO-START MAPS Badprenup

Make so if you have multiple blank maps in your inventory you automatically switch to a new one when you run off past the edge of the first map. In addition to that, If you leave map A in the bottom left corner you enter map B in the bottom right corner, to prevent wasting map space with overlap.

    MAP-MERGING TL10

When Players have up to/more than 9 maps, players can merge them into 1 map by crafting them in a full 3x3 or 2x2 grid. The merged map will then decide on what the central point on that new map will be, by comparing it with other maps, and place that map or area as the central point on that map. All the data will be filled on the map, that doesn't exceed the distance of what you see in the map, so basically if you craft a merged map with two maps showing areas being completely far away from eachother, the one furthest away from the central point and is not adjacent to any other maps will be lost. Any maps sharing similar data aquired from mapping will be overwritten and merged together. A crafted merged map will appear just like a regular map, but the lands that appear on the map will be compressed. There would be a hard limit too on how many times you can merge a specific map, so that you can't merge the same map as much as you want.

    COMPASS ROSE CaduceusGUILT

On the top right corner of the map, have a compass rose. Gives a little extra feel to it, and since the primary reason of a compass rose is so that you can hold the map properly, make it so that you can rotate it. Maybe right-clicking will rotate it clockwise?

posted a message on The components for an automated Minecraft.
One thing I've noticed in Minecraft is that you start out with nothing. You then will have a small hut, or an area in a cave. Than the hut becomes a house, or the cave gets deeper and wider. This process continues until you have this grand area that's either a giant mansion or a giant mined out area inside/under a mountain. You've evolved your building, your tools, and your farm... but your ability to create machines isn't really there. We have redstone, and we are getting pistons, but any form of creative machinery only REALLY exists in music.

I'd like to change that by adding many blocks that would add to the process of automation. These would be things like auto-crafting blocks, pumps, or what not. Anything that would be a component for a large machine.

    One tiny little problem...

There are no other humans in Minecraft at all... your idea was a fail before it started.

EDIT: I wonder what other politically unstable topic you're going to throw up next just to get shot down... abortion... stem cells? Both of which can't even be done in Minecraft.

I don't think Mojang could put any Alcoholic drinks in the game 'cause of ratings and stuff, since children play, and somehow chocolate milk and coffee seem a bit.. Unminecrafty, i guess. Too modern maybe. Shrug.
It would make a good mod though.

Notch could add alcohol as Ale. That fits Minecraft perfectly.
