If you stay on it too long, your minecart will disappear because of momentum overflow. You should include a dead end to stop the cart, then have a booster come back to launch it on its way again.

posted a message on Talking about Notch:
"Why can't Notch hire 3 guys to code his game?"

This quote, along with the agreement from almost everyone else in the thread, shows that hardly anyone knows how software design actually works.

The horrible truth about programming, the reason that so many projects go past their release dates, is that adding programmers generally does not speed up development. They have to first be trained to catch up with everything coded so far. I congratulate Notch for even being able to add one. Adding even one more would probably take up more coding time than it would produce, plus the programmer would get a paycheck from Notch.

As I recall, the only thing missing from the Halloween update was the lanterns. The Deeper the Meaner was included but was quickly removed, as everyone hated it. Odd how the two things from the update that aren't in the game now are both hated by the community.

Adding mod support to a game is one of the hardest things you can do. To get people to use the system, you need to allow full control over everything a modder might want to change. You can't even start this until the code is cleaned up, a process that takes a lot longer.

No, Notch cannot hire thousands of testers. Giving a version to them but not to the buyers would be a violation of the purchase agreement for most of us.

I agree that there should be a bed block or similar alternative, but there are lots of logistical problems that go with it that I wouldn't know how to solve. Any implementation I can come up with is open to exploitation.

SMP does not require mods to be playable. In fact, the best times I've had on multiplayer were on pure vanilla servers. Part of the problem is that the wiki seems to sabotage the vanilla interface, claiming for example that only OPs can modify blocks. Surprisingly, the vanilla server is ahead of hey0 ones in having /kill. There is no reason whatsoever for hey0 to deliberately remove this.

So what exactly are the mods required to make SMP playable? Let's start with cuboid. In every server I've seen this used, it ends up being a sort of exclusive privilege for long-term players while being inaccessible to the newbies who are expected to defend their buildings with PVP off and lava, water, TNT, and flint and steel disabled. Chest protect is a definite no-no for minecraft. While the concept makes sense, the implementation is low-quality. Commands like /sethome are not supposed to be in Minecraft. Nobody ever asks for them for single player.

The way it works now, people dig down all the way to bedrock and build up to sky limit just because they can (or to mine). Build a tower all the way up and look down; it is incredibly high already. If Notch increases it, people will just build/dig a bit further and still reach the limit.

Vertical chunks would be cool, but that would cause way too many technical issues. All of the chunks above or below any of the horizontal ones near you would have to be loaded all the time, for two reasons. The ones above you create shade, so even if a ceiling is ten chunks up it would still have to be processed. Also, if you jump off a cliff, you fall very quickly, so the chunks below you would have to be preloaded all the time. This would greatly increase both the RAM usage and the world size.

    mining glowstone is easy,

    1. Make a portal above sea level
    2. find glowstone near cliff
    3. build staircase into clifface
    4. ?????
    5. Profit

????? = get set on fire from ghast fireballs, possibly falling out of the staircase to your death, and losing most of the glowstone to explosions

This thread is a perfect example of why we have threads discussing cheating methods. It is impossible to have a discussion about legitimate gameplay tactics without a bunch of idiots coming in and saying that the best way is to mess with the game settings or even modify the game files externally.

That being said, you might want to try venturing out a bit from your portal, placing cobblestone landmarks as you go, until you find a sufficiently low group of glowstone, taking no more than a few blocks to tower up to it. If you went far enough, there should be few ghasts spawned, giving you enough time to get it all, and even if a ghast shows up you can easily hide behind a small wall.

I personally use an elevated cobblestone walkway system which is just under the roof and almost completely sheltered from ghasts. Whenever I want more glowstone, I just make another path over to the closest outcrop, enclose it in a half-box of cobblestone, and collect it in safety. This method takes a lot of cobblestone but is pretty safe; the only real danger is that a fireball could hit behind you as you build, knocking you off the structure. It is also possible for the ghasts to take out the glowstone, but that can happen with any plan.

No matter what method you use, never hesitate to shoot at a ghast if you get the chance. It only takes 3 arrows, and if they are close enough you are not likely to miss more than once or twice. I wouldn't bother with a fishing rod, that trick has never worked for me.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking for. Do you want a world built to start a multiplayer server for noobs, or do you just want someone's random half-decent single player world?

posted a message on Minecart dispenser.
There was a thread a while ago explaining how to make a good one using a door. Basically, you have a booster track that loops back around the long way and goes up (using the boosted momentum), and lands on the edge of a door just above the start of the booster track. There must also be a block just above the door and two meters behind it, with a ladder facing the door, to securely hold the cart in place. When the door is opened, the cart falls (as nothing is under it) and boosts the main cart. You can trigger this with a button, or you can place a stone pressure plate under the main cart waiting spot.

posted a message on Peaceful mode thoughts
It seems that almost nobody has any idea what they are talking about here (it's not a coincidence that hardly any games have cheat codes anymore), I'll lay out what should have been common sense.

-Playing on peaceful, for whatever reason: not cheating
-Playing on any other difficulty permanently: not cheating
-Playing on peaceful, switching to another difficulty when mob loot is needed: not cheating
-Playing on easy+, switching to peaceful for building/exploring/whatever: not cheating
-Playing on easy+, changing back to peaceful when you realize you made a mistake in setting the difficulty too high: not cheating
-Playing on easy+, using peaceful mode to kill the 5 creepers/20 ghasts outside your house and say "HUR IM SUCH A BADASS I BEAT THE MOBZ": cheating
-Using mods to make the game more fun: not cheating
-Using Invedit to give yourself a full chest of diamonds: cheating

Contrary to popular belief, Minecraft survival is NOT a true sandbox game. Creative mode is a sandbox game; you can do whatever you want and don't have to work for it. If you want to make survival into a sandbox game, playing on peaceful and using Invedit to get all your supplies, that's your own choice. Telling yourself that you overcame all the mobs on hard is cheating, and no, the "I keep it to myself" argument is clearly not valid because we see it all the time on this forum.

Playing a game only within the intended interface does not make it legitimate gameplay. When I play Civilization, I could move a few soldiers outside of the enemy city, save, and keep repeating the attack until it works, but that would be cheating, indistinguishable from using cheat codes. LRN 2 PLAY GAMEZ LEGIT.

posted a message on Not anywhere near ready for BETA...
I see a lot of people complaining about the many features in multiplayer that do not work yet. What exactly are you referring to? The number one problem, duping, is going to be at least mostly fixed with the beta update.

So what's left to be added? Sure, the nether doesn't work yet. That's one thing. What else? Minecart boosters don't always work? Those are a glitch to begin with; complaining that an avoidable glitch got glitchier (in a way that cannot be abused) is pointless. Then there's the tool repair bug, which is just that: a bug (which might get fixed by the beta update). The only issues beyond this are related to lag with enemies and such.

The "problems" with griefing and raiding chests are not problems with Notch's design but with the server owners who refuse to let people play the game as intended. The current version of minecraft only includes survival; we know that creative is coming in the future. When Halo Reach was in beta, you didn't see everyone whining that single player didn't even exist. Guess what? If you really want to play creative mode, you can, and it's even free!

So, going by the incorrect design model most of you think is the standard, the only two things that will be missing from the beta will be creative mode and the nether in multiplayer (all other issues are bugs). I think that's pretty close.

posted a message on down for christmas break!
Well apparently the people in control here have absolutely no idea what they're doing. Stealing is legal on this server, so I stole. I legitimately found a bunch of chests plus a secret stash and ran off with two stacks of TNT and a bunch of diamond stuff from a base in the sky. The next day, the resident who happens to be a friend of mods accuses me of griefing their base with the TNT despite the fact that there is no damage (apparently they had already fixed it). I even proved that I used the TNT elsewhere, showing the two specific craters where I blew up the ground; apparently that's where the base I blew up was, in complete contradiction of what they said earlier. I then stop playing for a few times because I'm busy, and get banned during that off time.

To make things worse, that same day there had been at least three TNT duping griefers running around and blowing up the whole area around the spawn, and I had spent a lot of time killing them and repairing some of the damage. Nobody even considered that they could have blown up the base (assuming the base was actually blown up).

I had also been accused of other things that day, such as flying, speed hacking, duping, invincibility, and invisibility. Some people just love making outrageous accusations. So if you like playing on servers where one person's word can get you banned without having any chance to defend yourself, definitely play here.

(And all this is assuming "*anti grief" is a rule and not a plugin)
