Chests works, until you try to open or break it. In fact, they're one of the few tile entities that'll crash the game when broken
Also, you're not far off about the flower pots, they're really weird in how they handle tile entities. A feature not a lot of people seem to know about is that you can make them drop enchanted loot by changing the data of the flower to hold another item, so there's a little fact you may or may not have known.
I think you can do the same thing with jukeboxes that you can with flower pots... I seem to recall Amlup making a video about it a long time ago.
I guess, to help the thread a little, I could mention that the 30th episode of my Insomnia LP came out yesterday, and I'm posting new ones every other day... Anyone want to give me some comments?
So a few general questions about this (sorry if these have been answered and I just missed it):
1. Can you use spawners/schematics that you used for a previous map (not schematics of giant dungeons of course but things like giant shrooms and custom mobs)?
2. Do we all start and end when it starts and ends in a certain timezone or in our own timezone?
3. Can you plop down a giant bedrock box and using a block randomization filter on it as preparation the day before the jam starts (I have a laptop so block randomization filters take around multiple hours for me)?
4. How exactly should we define a mini map? By this I mean what length, how many monument items, etc.
5. Do we need any definite proof that we made the map without any help from other people and using only our own filters? Also can we use things like Vechs' CTM schematics toolkit?
6. Is the winners prize anything more than eternal glory for five minutes?
7. For people that can't attend this jam, should we make it be so there's another jam exactly like this one for them (including theme and time constraints) just at a different date so they can participate (this is more of a suggestion than a question)?
8. Is it considered cheating to look at another mapmaker streaming there own maps creation while you are making your own?
Also I think I've changed my mind, I'll probably participate in this (unless it's a theme that I have trouble doing or something from the likes of such).
1. Yeah, as long as it's not too big. Use your own judgment and common sense to determine what counts as "too big".
2. I think it's going to be in our own timezones? I guess we could have everyone say when they're starting and when they're done in this thread, and as long as the difference isn't greater than 72 hours it's okay...
3. Uh... I don't know. I'm inclined to say that that's okay, but other people may feel differently.
4. I think it's a minimum of 3 objectives per person working on the map. So, if you cooperate with another person, you need 6 objectives.
5. No. We'll take your word for it. Also Vechs' schematics are probably okay.
6. Pretty sure it's more than 5 minutes, but probably not.
7. I'd love this.
8. Hmm... As long as you don't copy anything that they're doing (whether you're copying it intentionally or not), it'll be fine, I think. Basically, make sure that if you watch them, you don't end up subconsciously copying their ideas. It's probably better not to watch, though.
Unfortunately, I won't be around that weekend. Or at least, for all of Friday and most/all of Saturday. That weekend, and the weekend of April 4-6, are probably the worst possible for me. Well, maybe I'll just do my map the weekend before. I intend to livestream it, sorta like I did with the last Jam (despite the fact that last Jam, I lost inspiration halfway through). So, maybe I'll livestream the mapmaking the weekend before. Which I suppose would be next weekend?
...wait, I wouldn't know what the theme is. Hmm. That wouldn't work. Oh well, maybe I'll just do my Jam map the weekend after instead.
Really quickly guys, I have been WAY out of the CTM groove for far too long and I was wondering if there were any maps that are a shining gem of a map. After I finish them(if) I will review them and eventually put together a 'Top 10 CTM's list'.
Insomnia (Ragecraft 2) for sure, it's probably my favorite map ever. Also probably The Corrupted Path (Ragecraft 1), Animosity (Simulation Protocol), Vigilis Oculos (wait, that's a minimap, does it count?), Keystone (Emerald Dream 3), Monstrosity, Dreadsky Isles (Tales of Dreadsky 1), To Greener Pastures... that enough to start with?
Yeah, I'm of the opinion that ideas for themes shouldn't be too specific so that people have plenty of room for innovation. Also, as the person who came up with last Jam's theme ("Time"), I feel like I should have some ideas, but I don't.
I run in with full iron armor all enchanted, with enchanted tools and bow and spam torches everywhere, occasionally retreating to regen health. It worked in Spellbound Caves. And nowhere else...
...I think the CQ was more about making areas than playing them.
I guess I'll answer it too. First, let me explain my mapmaking process... I generally do major landscaping/cave-hollowing with WorldPainter for surface stuff and MCEdit for underground things. For finer control, I'm thinking of using my server and putting some Bukkit plugins (WorldEdit, VoxelSniper, stuff like that) on it. Another thing that I've done in the past is to make entire areas in a different world and use MCEdit to copy-paste them in.
So, I don't really tend to make backups often; it's probably something I should be doing more than I currently do. I guess I'm not very cautious, and I ought to be more careful about what I do. The problem is, I just don't really feel like it.
That's exactly what I mean.
When I say teleporters I mean like one to replace a hallway, unlike Eternal Battle. You would teleport infront of the other teleporter that leads back to the intersection. The teleporters would be labled of course. It would be just like a normal hallway, just faster.
Well as to that, I think that replacing hallways with teleporters should only be done if you *really* can't fit two or more areas together. Personally, I'd say that the use of teleporters in Pantheon is a bit lazy; however, I can understand not wanting to go to the bother of fitting those areas next to each other. Using teleporters as ways to get from a central location (i.e. the monument) to, say, different intersections is fine in my eyes. As another example, Insomnia sort of pushes how many teleporters you can use with all those checkpoints; I've never been sad to see one, though.
Would you prefer a map to be more like a traditional CTM map with its transitions, that is a straight waterway or a teleporter or a hallway to quickly escort you from point A to point B without any shenanigans, or would you like a map to have spaces in-between areas such as Upper Mines from IM?
Personally, I think both are fine. A traditional hallway or teleporter is fast and lets you get right to the area, while a map with spaces in-between areas allow for more exploration (as long as they are not too big so that I can complete the map within this decade).
I'm... not entirely sure what you mean by "in-between areas". Wasn't Upper Mines the area where the three skylights joined up, and where the white wool was?
@Other Stuff
Does anybody have a relevant response to my previous question? I'm really looking for somebody... If you missed it, it's on the last page.
;P Now I know this might sound stupid, but I was wondering is there was anyone who loves doing CTM grunt work, but has a deficiency of ideas. If so, I have the opposite problem. I'm always coming up with ideas thast would be absolutely brilliant, but I know that if I had to do all of the work myself, I would never finish a map (I can hardly finish playing one). If there's anyone who would be interested in doing a collab map with me, I would totally love that.
Hmm. Well, I think I probably have the problem where I don't have enough ideas (I can't think of any good dungeons for my cave-style map), so... I guess I'd be open to the idea.
By the way, we ought to resume playing that map together. I'll send you a link to a spreadsheet where we can coordinate times.

No, really. Wow. I can't think of many useful applications beyond what you've figured out, but... The stuff that can be done in Minecraft. Wow.

*tee hee hee*
So, would I be Neide? 'Cause that might be able to get confusing, since I know someone called Neidhart, and he sometimes goes by Neid.
...aaaaand, on-topic-ness:
Just wondering: Who here is watching my LP of Insomnia?

I'm totally gonna start calling you '8' now.
Overkill? It's the best way to show a custom crafting recipe that I've ever seen!
