Perhaps, but it's just a theory. What I'm saying here is supported by my testing, and it holds valid for me, on multiple occasions. Portals are linked to other nearby portals.
Another test:
I made a new map, and two new portals. Go through one. Return through same one, arrive at portal opposite of the entrance one. Return to Nether, place another 'return' portal, just like on the surface. Return through it; same results. I ended up at the same return spot, the 2nd one aboveground.
Just try it.
Well what i did was to make a platform over the lava lake that was right by the portal spawned in hell and put another portal on that platform, now when i go through the second hell portal it takes me right back to my spawn area so yea its definitely not just a theory.
