Progress from me at least has slowed considerably, due to changes in rl, unfortunately. Well, the changes themselves are good, just leave less time for this. Coding is the single most time consuming thing ever, trust me.

That said, I haven't abandoned DD at all, I just might end up skipping an MC version. Depends on when I can get things finished. The removal of block IDs for future MC versions has thrown a wrench in how our schematics are loaded. Also, DD is and always has been open source. Most of the update work has been done by a generous contributor, actually.

Yea, thats a dev version for sure, heh. Working on a new render for the rifts. That specific bug should be fixed, but its still dev and use it at your own peril.

I think that lore argument is an excuse. The technical argument is good enough (for now :P).

How, in the general sense, does a rift in reality "know" where it is? Its just as easy (in minecraft) to say it has an absolute position as it is to say it is anchored to its immediate environment. If I use a mod like applied energistics - that can take a cube of the world temporally move it to its own kind of pocket dimension, who is to say that rifts would not be preserved in that process? Which mods lore "wins"?

A single rift is very simple under the hood- it's just an arrow. It's a set of 4D coordinates that point to another set of 4D coordinates. Generally, at the end of that arrow, there is another arrow pointing back at it, but not necessarily.

Lore-wise, I see rifts as something underneath the blocks and stuff. Sort of like a tear on a piece of canvas. AE spacial storage stuff works with the paint on the surface of that canvas- It scrapes it all off, stores it somewhere, and then plops it down again somewhere else. It isn't tearing up the canvas itself, because then nothing would be left behind to put blocks back onto- removing the canvas would be removing degrees of freedom inherent in those coords, and instead of leaving a visible gap, the sides of the removed area would now become adjacent to each other, instead of separated by whatever was in between.

You can imagine what types of problems that would lead to, heh.

So I was playing Minecraft and messing with Dimensional Doors. I get an egg to spawn a, and when I place it, it makes this really creepy noise. (I'm wearing headphones so this is super creepy) but nothing spawns... Help me!

What you did was spawn a monolith in the overworld, where the instantly despawn. Try in a pocket dim.

No. Currently, it would be impossible, because the data for any links leading to a door is completely separate from the data of the link starting at that door. We can't efficiently search for those inbound links to modify them. Yes, the mod could be changed so those searches could be done, but then just allowing that could be used to interfere with links that you shouldn't be able to modify.

Even if you could move links pointing into the door, the door's link wouldn't move with it. Supporting that would require additional changes to how the mod works, so that doors can tell that their links are in the wrong spots and attempt to move them. Overall, given the risk of bugs involved, I'm not sure I'd ever want this to be possible. Perhaps I could take the risk for the MC 1.7 version.

I'd really recommend against moving doors with mods right now. As other people have posted, the results can be unpleasant, although nothing should crash.

I totally second SenseiKiwi's position on this. He is correct from a technical aspect, which is alone enough of a reason to not do it, but also think from a lore aspect.

Rifts are tears in the fabric of reality, essentially miniature wormholes. Dragging the door off of one is not going to pull that tear along with it

Hey! Been away for a bit, real life and all, but I will start working on stuff again pretty soon. The latest dev build has locks and personal pockets implemented, actually, in case anyone wants to test that for me.

Locks are pretty simple- craft a key, and while it has a glowing enchantment on it, clicking a door with it creates a lock for that door. The lock graphic will appear over the door window. That key now can lock/unlock that door, and allows its carrier to pass through the door. Clicking the door with the key will toggle its lock status, white being "lock preset, but unlocked", and black being "lock present, and locked".

That key now can lock/unlock that door. You can trade access to doors by crafting keys together. Place the donator key above the recipient, and the bottom key will now be able to unlock/lock the doors the top key could.

I uh, cant actually remember the crafting recipe right now. NEI anyone?

Personal pockets are created using quartz dim doors, crafted from two quartz doors made exactly how you think they are. They create a rift that, when traversed, will always teleport a player to their own pocket dimension. These personal pockets are visually distinct from regular pockets, and have some special limitations, namely no warp doors.

So, feel free to test the new dev version.

Out of curiosity, if and when this is updated to 1.7 and above, is there any chance you can put all the dimensions into just one? I always found it rather odd that each door generates a complete dimension, and worried it would create server bloat and the lag of generating a new dimension every time someone goes through a new portal. (I have the same concern about Mystcraft)

What I'm suggesting is just put the dims on the same plane but a distance away from each other. They are all rather finite, so if you put them a few chunks away from each other on the same dimension I don't think they'd ever touch...and on top of that with the black block everything is shrouded in even if a player broke out of the area he'd still not see the next "dimension" over. Not sure of the difficulties that would entail, but as 1.7 and up requires pretty much a rewrite anyway I thought I'd throw it out there :)

Pocket dimensions will always stay as separate worlds for a few reasons.

One, it lets me control how players come and go pretty well. Mods can get players through bedrock pretty easily, so it keeps pockets private.

Two, it actually increases performance for servers. A player in a pocket will consume less memory that a player in a classic world, and generating an entire pocket dimension consumes less server resources that a player in the overworld generating one new chunk of travel distance. Furthermore, loading a pocket dimension consumes less resources than a player in the overworld loading one chunk of travel distance.

Three, a base in a pocket dimension will consume far less space on a hard disc that a comparable base in the overworld, because minecraft compresses saves pretty well, actually.

Fourth, finally, and for the future, individual worlds will inhabit individual threads. This will provide a massive performance advantage on most servers that have many cores and high multitasking capabilities, because pocket dim ticks will not effect overworld ticks even if players have huge laggy machine bases.

Hello! I'm hoping for a little assistance. My wife and I keep a server going for a small group of friends. Right now we are running a slightly modified FTB Monster, and I added Dimensional Doors R2.2.3 because we've all loved this mod since Hexxit. Due to popular request, I edited the config, increasing the chance of rifts, because who doesn't enjoy hanging out by black particles and collecting ender pearls? :) After starting a new world and all the players scattering from spawn, a few MC days in, we noticed a serious lack of hostile mobs, unless from dungeon spawners.

After much reading and experimenting, I installed Opis, and discovered at any one time there were close to 350 endermen in the world. I assumed they were eating up the mob cap, and I verified by running the 'opis_killall enderman' command. After all enders were removed, regular mobs popped up everywhere around all players again. Opis also informed me there were close to 2,000 rifts. I changed the config, putting all chances back to default, set ender spawning to false, and restarted the server. The problem remains. Once a day for about an hour, I go into creative, grab a rift remover, and run around manually removing rifts. I'm down to 900ish rifts, and the world is averaging 140 enders at any one time. It's a slow process.

We could remove the mod, losing our network of warp doors and our adventures into rift dungeons. We could start a new world, which none of the players want to do (we've got about 2 weeks in so far and everybody is just getting set up to learn their next big mod). Aside from those two options, is there anything we can do quickly to either remove the rifts or stop the enders from spawning?

Sadly, it may be too late for this, but there is a command that is designed to do exactly that. Its still a tad unfinished, so you should DEFINITELY back up your world before using it, but here it is-

    /dd-??? <dimID>

It will go through and delete all exposed rifts from a dimension. This means that it will ignore any rifts that are occupied by doors, so it should preserve all existing door networks. Emphasis on should.

This mod is awesome. I kind of wish it could be updated but I am sure the people who made this arn't paying much attention to it now.

mmm? As i understood it, a door from the overworld into a dungeon would have the same co-ordinates in the dungeon as in the overworld.

But a door from dungeon a, to dungeon b, would not. Any exits from dungeon b to the overworld, would have matching co-ordinates.

Thus, the difference in co-ordinates in doors between dungeons, amounts to "free" overworld travel.

Yes, you are correct. Generated dungeon->overworld doors generally always line up, and the distance between dungeon->dungeon doors increases with depth to provide fast travel.

Is Modded: Definitely; Client brand changed to 'fml, forge'
Tested in SSP, Forge, DimDoors 2.2.3-336, XBEE 1.0.8 (which is one version out of date, but based on the changelog, should not make a difference.) Other mods' doors have no problem. Is it DimDoors' fault, or XBEE's?

Also, I have a non-report. My computer lost power while I was playing a test world in SSP. After starting up again, I couldn't load the world - it would crash with a ChickenBonesLib ticking tile entity null pointer ref whatever error (...that's gotta be part of Forge, right? I removed all ChickenBones-related mods and it still gave that error message.) After trying various things, I was able to load that world after deleting the DimensionalDoors folder from the save.

At the time, I was running 2.2.3-336 but the world may have originally been created with 2.2.1, if that makes any difference. Anyway, it's a non-report because I didn't think to keep the crash log, nor world files. If you're interested, I might try to induce it again.

Wow, I almost missed this. Ill take a look at that first bug, I think I know what might be causing that. As for the other crash, that sounds like exactly the bug that SenseiKiwi patched just a few days ago.

EDIT- I *think* I just patched that crash, unless that mod is doing something really strange with items. You can try the latest github build if you want, or wait till it gets promoted to stable.

Yeah, Thanks guys, I will keep ya updated! Is it ok to Deobfuscate other mods to lean how they were made, as long as you dont steal any code?

Yea, that's generally ok. Better yet, here is a listing of open source mods-

Anyway, it looks like you are learning to code, learning java, and learning to mod minecraft all at the same time. While there are many, many ways to learn programming in general, they all require one thing- patience. 10 hours in java is nothing. Its like learning a language. Expect literally hundreds of hours.

The fact that you don't have a solid background to rely on when dealing with minecraft's messy code doesn't make it impossible at all, just slower.

All that said, learning to code is one of the most useful, satisfying things you can do, so keep at it.

Installed the mod, and in the config I have the dimdoors.cfg, and then a folder for more schematics, which is empty except for a file called "How_to_add_dungeons.txt" which is empty... should the text have info on how to add dungeons? Does my game not have dungeons enabled unless I cause it to happen? These "seemingly limitless" dungeons you speak of, do they happen in the overworld, or is there some new dimension that has infinity dungeons? Thanks!

Currently, the instructions to add dungeons are a bit out of date, so its blank right now to just avoid misinforming people. There are plenty of dungeons that come with the mod, though, so don't worry about that. Each dungeon room spawns in its own, miniature dimension.

That said, personal pockets are now finished, more or less, just hamming out the details.

I also probably should put some bedrock or something under limbo. Or just falling makes you respawn on top.

Quick question: How long would it be until 1.7.2 support, or does it already and I'm just missing it :0 ?

No ETA yet, working on it. Well, actually not working on it. I just finished adding locks, keys, and locking doors. After a bit of testing, I will upload it.

As of right now, when you create a key, it can create a single lock on a door. Once it has created a lock, then it starts behaving just like a key and can open that door only.

Honestly, each key functions more like a key ring. You can craft your key with another key to add the doors it can unlock to the doors that your key can unlock, letting you share doors and stuff. It should be fun, I think.

    Next, personal pockets.

Am I just stupid or is it really easy to get killed in the dungeons and transported to limbo? Thank goodness for 'gamerule keepInventory true'

It is stupidly easy, but I also let you keep your inventory regardless of whether or not you have that gamerule active.

And don't forget people-- You can use regular doors for instead of actual dim doors if you already have a link. No need to spend ender pearls or anything on them. Just click the rift with a wooden door!

Thanks, but for some reason half my doors now link to some random spot in the middle of the ocean. (???)

In the meantime, I'm able to load the world in 1.5.2 and get the coordinates to relink things manually... so, I guess I'll get back to you with my progress when I'm done.

Thats... odd. I didn't anticipate it breaking like that at all, honestly. Maybe you could upload your entire minecraft installation? I know that's a lot of trouble, but I imagine its how other mod's dimensions are loading or something. Its hard to know if I fixed something without actually being able to test it.

    Plus I'm curious, heh.

There should be a way to kill monoliths. They're the creepiest thing ever, but the one thing I like in Minecraft is feeling like a god when I get powerful enough, and so I'd like some way to kill monoliths. A special sword, a varient of TNT, something. Also, because it's really annoying when you spawn one in a map by accident, or in an adventure map in creative and you didn't want it there.

I may add someway to 'convince them to leave'. The notion of 'killing' really doesn't apply to monoliths.
