For the past year, I have been playing the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. I have grown accustomed to using slabs and stairs to hide lighting. Now I am transitioning to the Java Edition and looking for alternative lighting methods. After some research, I found this fantastic hidden lighting guide from a couple of years ago. I learned some new tricks like using pistons which have textures that blend well with both oak and stone.
Are there any newer methods of hiding lighting? What are your favorite ways to light your builds in the Java Edition?
Another option if you and your friends all have Windows 10 devices, is to play on a Bedrock multiplayer world. If you own the Java Edition, you can get a free copy of the Windows 10 (Bedrock) Edition. On Bedrock Edition, you can host a multiplayer world and invite your friends to join via their xbox gamertags. This would be a good option if you and your friends want to play vanilla Minecraft (not modded).
Confirmed. My friend who owns the Java Edition just got the Windows 10 / Bedrock Edition (formerly MCPE) for free earlier this week. Here are instructions from Mojang's support page on how to get your free code.
Someone shared a really neat Bedrock seed (928574289) with a village island, stronghold, ravine, shipwreck and underwater ruins at spawn. See link for screenshot and coordinates.

My favorite relaxing activities in Minecraft are farming, fishing and playing with animals. I also enjoy building trading villages. You can set up villager breeding fairly quickly in survival, but you have to spend time unlocking the villagers and finding the ones with the best trades, deciding which ones you're going to keep. You can do as little as you like or just as a background activity while building something else. If you're interested, here is my villager breeding system. Hope you find something you enjoy!
A few months ago, I found a great Bedrock seed 971957955 that has all biomes within 1500 blocks of spawn and a mansion within 10,000 blocks. If you don't like that seed, try looking here for other Bedrock seeds. Have fun!
Personally, I enjoy villager trading. You will greatly benefit from having access to diamond gear and any enchantments you want. You can set up villager breeding fairly quickly in survival, but you have to spend time unlocking the villagers and finding the ones with the best trades, deciding which ones you're going to keep. This process is time consuming, but I'm always delighted when I find the best deals like Mending for 10 emeralds. If you're interested, here is my villager breeding system. Have fun!
I would also recommend adding a roof so your villagers are protected from lightning and stray arrows. If you don't already have a farm for them inside, I suggest adding that as well. I prefer carrots so the villagers don't fill their inventories up with seeds or poisonous potatoes. If you're interested, this is my villager breeding system.
Yes, you can combine two lower level enchanted books to get the next highest level of book. For example, combining two Unbreaking II books to get an Unbreaking III book. FYI, Protection books only go up to level IV, not level V.
Farmers are definitely the best way to get emeralds. Librarians are great for enchanted books like Mending. I didn't think they offered Mending for less than 10 emeralds. I also really like getting enchanted diamond gear from Blacksmiths. Here's a handy chart you may have seen that shows every trade each villager offers and the best possible trades.

While technically not a block, I love the look of the swirly purple nether portal (inside the obsidian).

Use "prosplank" seed and you will find a desert temple at 1650 x -400 containing an enchanted apple. Have fun!

Since my husband always makes a skeleton farm, I enchant my bow with Mending. But hubby still prefers Infinity.
