I agree. At the moment I think Spigot is still the way to go for you. But: my experience is that you will begin to find interest in the above mentioned issues with license, development power and such as time goes by. Therefore I would recommend trying out both Spigot and Sponge if you have got the time.
I see a lot of Spigot plugins dying this year and I wonder if now (or soon) is the time for Sponge.
I am also looking for a possible jump to something new as I see more and more of my bukkit/spigot plugins dying.
Sponge seems a bit young and not so many plugins are ported.
I may have to skip the whole portfolio of old plugins, but there are missing important functions such as logging (hawkeye) worldguard (grief protection) and lwc (chest locks).
