posted a message on 1.6.2 can't stack minecarts?
Adiora, I get you! I basically had stopped mining because I took all the cobblestone, cooked it into stone, then make stone bricks, which I cooked into cracked stone bricks. I had 4 double chests full of cracked stone bricks, a chest full of stone waiting to become cracked stone bricks, and 8+ double chests of cobblestone all over creation. I was like "F it I'm done".

Then I combined this one guys water -> glass item transportation with a sorting loop that's like 6 blocks above the floor in my basement. So when those start getting full, I'll just add another double chest and hopper to that chain. Yeah... dirt is already into the next basement... And I've got a dropper that drops into lava for the leaves, etc, that I just cant be arsed to deal with.

To get rid of all my cracked stone, I'm building villages inside the loaded chunks. That's been entertaining & trying to implement a mini 8-village version of Tango Tek's iron titan caused me to build a php driven website to monitor villages.dat...

    :P

posted a message on Simple village.dat parser for vanilla SMP server
I'm trying to implement iron golem farms in 1.8 (now 1.8.1) and have given up making any of the cool village info mods work. So I wrote a php script that can parse villages.dat and get a report on the currently loaded villages. The php code is in a gist here.

I thought I'd share it in case anyone else is as maddened by villages as I am. Below is the php script's output. Note that I implemented jQuery to fold/hide the excess doors in a village.

My server is on Ubuntu 14.04 and I did apt-get install lighttpd php5 php5-fpm and dropped my gist and the nbt.class.php files in /var/www.

Edit: I updated villages.php to add styling and code folding.

Sorry for necromancing, but I've been Googling and searching and this thread is the only actual resource.

In case people are still trying to stack storage minecarts, I'm on 1.8 and there's no way. They removed the box from the track and the minecart's UI extends well into the hopper below it.

All the WiKis and peoples' YouTubes need updating. :P

posted a message on map items buggy for players on vanilla 1.8
    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Minecraft, but been a sysadmin for over a decade. The problem is with map items; they're not reliable at all and the only fix when they do break is a server restart.

    Map item mis-behavior:

    • No one shows up on map
    • You do show up at the edge then as you become a pointer and move inwards, it disappears under the map itself (implying a graphics layering issue)
    • Other maps might work properly
Client-side steps taken trying to sort it out:

    • Throw down/discard misbehaving map item (doesn't work)
    • Log out and log in, hoping for a fix like what nether travel does to maps (doesn't work)
    • Place all maps in chest then logout/login (doesn't work)
    • Update Win7 from normal java to 64 bit java 7 (doesn't work)
The server is a core i7 2600k with 8GB ram that I took from work (i own the biz) with a fresh ubuntu 14.04 lts 64 bit install on a 120G SSD. Oh and intel gigabit NIC because I hate realtek. No problems connecting to the server from the Internet. I evoke the server using nohup and & to background it. I'll probably leave it in a cron once I don't have to restart it 3x 4x a day just to have working maps.

    Server-side steps tried:

    • Messed with the switches when evoking the jar. Current startup command is: java -Xmn2G -Xss4M -Xms4G -Xmx4G -XX:+UseLargePages -XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:+UseFastAccessorMethods -XX:+OptimizeStringConcat -XX:+UseBiasedLocking -Xincgc -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=10 -XX:SoftRefLRUPolicyMSPerMB=10000 -XX:+CMSParallelRemarkEnabled -XX:ParallelGCThreads=10 -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui >> server.log 2> errors
    • Removed open-jre and installed oracle java7 64 bits
    • Initially ran via init.d, however I didn't like how files changed to belonging to root, so I went with starting as minecraft user.
Any ideas or guidance to getting the maps behaving greatly appreciated. I'm open to non-vanilla server software, too, if it runs 1.8 clients. Most especially if we can keep our current world.

    Thanks!
    Chris

posted a message on Map item doesn't show the player
This is all vanilla. Client is 1.8 on Windows 7. Happens with current Java as well as 64 bit best java 7.

The bug normally is: I open a map and I'm not on it. We share our maps, so it's only happened on a shared map.

    Further observations:

    • The green pointers for where other players have maps in item frames always appear. Edit: with tonight's daily restart of the server so I could play, this time, only the "first" green pointer shows up.
    • Other players will appear on it.
    • When holding adjacent maps, I may or may not properly show as a moving white circle at the edge, meaning that I occasionally don't show up on any maps at all.
    • One time, only one map didn't work.
    • Another time, I rendered as the circle when outside a map then as I turned into the pointer and began moving on the map I'm holding, the pointer disappeared underneath the map itself.
    • Once or twice, having everyone log out at the same time fixed this problem. Now that we've played more and have more maps, this doesn't work anymore.
    • Stopping and then restarting the server always fixes the problem.
Steps I've tried to fix which do not work at all:

    • Throwing away / dropping the map and picking it back up.
    • Leaving the map in a chest then logging out and logging back in.
Server is fresh ubuntu 64 bit install on 4 core / 8 thread i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz with 8 GB of RAM. It's dedicated to this purpose & never shows a load.

Initially, the server's java was open-java like you get from apt get install. Now it is oracle java 7 and while does seem to perform better for the clients, I still am surprised when the map DOES work and my usual expectation is that the map won't work.

    Any help greatly appreciated,
    Chris
