posted a message on Piston Science!
If you have been following the minecraft news at all, you would know that the piston mod is going to be implemented into the game. For those of you who dont know much about it, here is a video.

So, seeing as there is a redstone, redstone repeater, and cannon science thread, I thought it fit to make a Piston Science thread for a place to share developments in pistons (duh!), as well as to speculate on the release, both the time and what notch will change in it. My personal idea is that pistons will be able to move pistons.

    So far:

Self building things with cobblestone generators/sand
    Sand waves
Door alternative that you can kill stuff through, can be wider than double doors.
    Moving walls (secret passageways)

    Links up soon.

    Anyone made anything else

Theres a interesting glitch with piston cannons which doubles the range to a round about 80 blocks and straigtens there firing arc, if you use 2 pistons side by side to push the tnt block.

That's a great idea, cause TNT jumps north and east, if you put a piston on the north/east side it will double range. And then if you want more arc you can put another under it.

And for aiming, use basically a three rail conventional cannon, but the center rail is the piston.

Has anyone rangetested the standard piston cannon? And what happens if you push a falling tnt/sand upwards with a piston? Sorry I cant test these myself, mods dont work for me.

I for one think that rapid fire sand cannons could be very effective, maybe after blowing the roof out with a couple shots of tnt, as well as using sand to aim so you dont use precious tnt.

Short range cannon warfare has been changed forever.
Cannoneers, get out your games and start working!
    Next steps:
    Faster RoF
    More power with multiple pistons
Change the angle (maybe do the firing mechanism while falling/jumping?)
Hybrid with normal cannon, maybe put a rail on each side to help aim?

On the sand vs cobblestone debate that will eventually ensue, I think cobblestone is obviously cheaper, but sand gives arguably better reload. (you have to place blocks, not mine them), though getting down would be a problem.

Placing 2 blocks of sand over the projectile with 10 fully delayed repeaters results in a sand cannon.

I like the shard idea, maybe when you break a glass block you get a pile of glass shards (1 item, not a bunch). Smelting glass shards makes a glass block, and they can be used to make arrows too.

    Or you could have gloves.

Gloves would break blocks really slowly, but keep them intact, such as stone, glass, ice, redstone ore, and lapis.

I was just thinking that Notch could pick the ones that are good and fit in with the game.

I think that, with the huge amount of mods produced by the community, Notch should choose some of them, ask the makers for permission, and then implement them into the game, with changes as he sees fit. Imagine how many new things we would get with each update, and this would be an incentive for modders to make more mods.

No, like the Lambda cannon, it fires before the projectile has even started it's jump, giving it no arc, and then you put 74 horizontal boosters directly behind it (no angle), and 2 vertical boosters under it.

Use half blocks or jump ignition? Thats about it. Unless you want to separate the vertical and horizontal boosters (very advanced, not reccomended)

Someone needs to get down to it and finally build the huge mega cannon we have all thought of. Jump ignition, almost no arc, and freakin HUGE.

Just continue it up 100 blocks, and maybe make another beside it and put the projectile between them.

The simplest way to do this would be to find the dimensions at which bigger does not equal better, and then use MCEdit to copy and paste it to those dimensions. Then, rig up the redstone manually, unless we can find a pattern in that too.

I think the biggest dimensions would be about 100 tall (because past that the boosters would explode in mid air) and 11 wide (because being further than 5 away from the projectile does nothing). Can anyone confirm that last fact?
