I just tested this. Water springs most definitely do not become obsidian, they become cobblestone.
I have dropped lava on water springs. it makes obsidian.
You dropped a lava spring directly on a water spring... meaning, they touch. The lava spring gets turned into obsidian, not the water spring.

It says right there that a cart + A chest = An openable cart.
It's still a cart. And you can open it and store **** in it. It's just that it'll require an extra chest during the crafting phase to differentiate it from the inevitable motor-carts.
they don,t turn into springs, the tracks just disappear :| it's aggravating but not that big a deal unless you have some extremely long, straight, constant, downward track.
