Ugh, dont get me started on kids. I wore my full body steve costume for +90% of the event and it was incredibly stressful at times.
So you have my full respect for that, I saw you on both days multiple times and your outfit was awesome, have 10,000 Internet points. I heard a few people debating if you where an 'offical' steve or not, great work on the quality of your costume
Sounds like you had quite the hard time of it, my friend who is really into Cos-playing in ridiculous outfits allways takes her boyfriend with to as 'security', maybe you need to do the same (I don't mean get a boyfriend, but recruit one of your (trusted) friends to come with )
Sadly, some attendees walked off with it, along with a ton of stuff they shouldn't have been walking out with.
I saw lots of people walking off with stuff, but after Minemon 2012 they where actually giving parts of the set away, and encouraging people to take it, so i assumed it was going to be the same
They sold too many tickets. And there were too many children. It lacked structure in the activities.
Yeah thats all about right.
I was at Minecon 2012 last year, and the big difference for me was that I kept bumping into the B-Team.. The mindcrack guys where actually there as attendees, I saw them sitting in the audience for a lot of other panels... and rather than being mobbed by an endless stream of kids at every turn. I even had a nice friendly conversation with GenerikB in the hotel bar...
This year opening was delayed mostly because a whole bunch of kids had decided they wanted Caveman films and some other guys autographs and could not be talked into getting out of the way sitting the hell down. When that cupquake girl and the guy she was with appeared at the opening there was loads of kids milling around trying to stop them leaving the stage to sign autographs.. despite the fact they where in the middle of going back stage, fortunately security was with them.
In the 'how to run a server' panel there was a whole bunch of kids who clearly had no interest in what was being said and started talking and moving around once they realized there was not going to be any YouTube stars to pester. Most of them left after about 20 minutes I'd say there was less than 1,000 people there in the end.. hard to tell with it being a huge hall tho.
There where people walking out of the opening ceremony to go next door and get in line to buy stuff, I spoke with a few parents during the whole thing who where really only there to escort their kids, and had no real interest in the game or the surroundings... One mother was telling me all about her plan to buy multiple things from Target and then get it signed by as many people as she could with the express purpose of selling them on ebay..
If you thought the ebay ticketing was bad wait until you see all the junk that shows up now it's over...
And really thats part of the reason the tickets sold out so quick, the number of 'families' there, when only 1 of them played the game.. I over heard a huge argument going on back in my hotel with one family, about how much time they had 'wasted' at the convention and why could not they goto Disney..
I have no idea who that girl was at the Closing ceremony, or why having her on to promote her itunes account was really connected to anything.. and as to that hugely original Miley Cirrus parody with more blackscreen than talent... well I guess it's better than last years endless repetition of that gad awful Gandam style monstrosity..
In summary, I did enjoy myself, I met some nice people had a good enough time... but I'm on the fence about if I'd goto next years, It depends on where it is really.. and if its going to be such a such a 'family' event again..
I've seen the argument here and elsewhere that there bulk of the games player base are under 14... and I guess I should of expected what I got.. but that does not stop me wishing there was a more 'adults only' options for minecon, for people who are actually interested in the game and dont just want autographs and to ask Notch 'whats your favourite block?'
So far I've had a couple of conversions with people who have bought tickets (mostly for their kids) on ebay, so it definitely happend.
and while I've been too polite to ask, two of the people I spoke with told me that they managed to pick them up for 'not much more' than the original price.. one lady today me she bought hers on Thursday for LESS than the original price.
If you think about it, even forgetting the scalpers there was bound to be last minute delays/problems that stopped people going..
Unfortunately we live in a consumerist society and like it or not the quick or the rich win eveytime....
... If you want to hear more about how we should smash up the system and replace it with a much nicer, I'm having a meeting down at the docks at midnight... bring your own pitchfork/torch
are you playing on a server or using a local area conenction?
If your on a sever get the admin to change the port to something that's not blocked... tho they might just be putting everything through a proxy in which case your out of luck..
I booked into the Hilton using the regular Hilton booking website, and got a standard room for a lot less than the 'cheap rate' they where quoting on mojang's website, by about $60 a night.
And since I'm a Hilton Diamond card holder I got bumped upto the Executive floor..
It's of course personal choice and all, but I have to say I'm kinda disapointed with whats on, if it was not for the Mindcrack panel on the Sunday afternoon I'd be tempted to not bother with the Sunday at all...
There seems to be very little on that interests me.. despite the fact I managed to find something to watch/do both days last year...
