posted a message on Cannot seem to cure "server overloaded" and subsequent crashing.

It's backed up nightly, but this problem has been going on for years.

What really makes no sense is, corrupted or not, how can the software complain about server overload on a server that's not overloaded? In fact, you'd have a hard time seeing there was anything running at all, from the server hardware point of view.

How can it be repaired? It's a world upon which the users have worked for at least 8 years. Last thing I want to do is trash it.

    Pretend it doesn't. What next?

Here is the server log from the last crash (last night, when I had two players in). I'm only including the tail of this log, which is thousands of lines of "server overloaded" messages:

And here is the crash log file referenced by the server log. Some names have been obfuscated to protect the innocent:

which goes on and on until it spikes and crashes.

I just logged in and walked around for a minute and logged out. At this time I'm the only person on the server. Here is the latest.log for that time period:

Here is a CPU snapshot at that time:

CPU not busy. Here is disk I/O:

Disk not busy. Here is network I/O:

This machine is on the same VLAN as the client in this case, with 2Gbit/sec of bidirectional bandwidth and nothing else happening. So, network not busy either.

Nothing is happening, as far as the computer hardware is concerned, but as far as Minecraft Java Server is concerned, the sky is falling.

I can't even begin to list all the FAQs I've read and parameters I've adjusted over the years. I've also upgraded the hardware of the host more than once, and I migrated it to a 64-bit Linux OS in the interest of expanding the RAM I can make available to the Java runtime process, which had zero effect.

Any productive suggestions would be appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    G.

posted a message on Latest java server .jar should be offered under an unvarying link

Why does the latest server .jar file always get posted under a unique link? I understand the need to have historic versions available under GUID directory names or something, but the latest should always be in a predictable link so I can AUTOMATE THE UPDATE PROCESS rather than manually grab the link. It's really annoying.

posted a message on Cannot seem to cure "server overloaded" and subsequent crashing.

I've tried every suggestion, tweaking every launch parameter, nothing makes any difference. Running java server on linux box, I have all sorts of monitoring logs and graphs, the box runs nothing else, it's multi-core with lots of RAM. Running minecraft causes no spike in usage of any CPU, RAM, RAM bandwidth or IO. Minecraft runs fine - until someone joins. Then within seconds, I start getting "server overloaded" messages in the log, with varying amounts of "ticks behind" which generally climb until it's at 60 sec and then boom, crash. At NO TIME does CPU usage spike, it never gets over 5-7 percent. At NO TIME does RAM usage or RAM I/O spike, it is never off the floor. At NO TIME does disk I/O spike. It's as if the machine is doing nothing, yet the software whines and complains about "server overload" and the one user on it experiences increasing lag until it finally crashes. I've been running Minecraft on Linux for years and this problem has been constant through many upgrades of hardware, underlying O/S and Minecraft version without relief. What gives?

posted a message on Where oh where did the logfiles go?

A final piece of info: running the MC .jar as root generates logs no problem. Running it as the minecraft user pops the error. This has worked for years, until I monkeyed with the CLI params today. Any idea what permissions the minecraft user is failing on? I must have re-created a file somewhere as root when I manually executed the Java .jar during testing, and now the minecraft user can't touch it, but I can't figure out which file.

Not sure why running the java instance with the -server option would cause this big blowup. Any suggestions for clearing this so I can get my log files going again would be great.

    Thanks,

posted a message on Where oh where did the logfiles go?

I've been running a Java based server on Linux for a number of years. Trying to troubleshoot sources of lag and altered my invocation from:

    java -Xms512M -Xmx2048M -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=$CPU_COUNT -XX:+AggressiveOpts -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

    to:

    java -server -Xms512M -Xmx2048M -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:+AggressiveOpts -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

and now I have no logfiles being generated. They're not anywhere - neither in the default location, nor anywhere else on the server. I'm guessing the governing option is "-server", as I can't see how any of the other changes might have caused the problem. Any idea how to get logfiles to be generated again in this config?

    Thanks,

posted a message on Private Server Friend Can't Connect

Not sure if you're hitting the problem I am, but since upgrading to 1.12.2, the new Windows client won't connect to the new server because the server serves using TCP and the Windows client is requesting using UDP. I had to have my friends that use Windows downgrade to the older client.

OK, maybe that was too much text. How about this - why is the 1.12.2 Minecraft server listening on and responding to TCP, and the Mac OS X 1.12.2 client making requests on TCP, but the 1.12.2 Windows client making requests using UDP, to which the server will not respond?

    Thank you,

posted a message on Protocol mismatch, client<->server

    Dear Minecrafters,

I've been running a server for years and am very familiar with it. I have my server running on a Linux machine. The folks who have been using it haven't been in in a while and they contacted me today to tell me it was "not working". I updated the server to their new client version (1.12.2), and they still couldn't connect. I checked the networking and noticed the server was behaving "normally" (that is, as it always has), by serving my server port on TCP. My client on my machine (v1.12.2 on Mac OS X) can contact it without a problem, and does so using TCP. However, the Windows client my friends are using is trying to use UDP, which I've never seen from a Minecraft client in the past. I can't figure out how to either force their client to use TCP as it has in the past, or force my server and my client to use UDP.

I have gobs of captures and screenshots if it helps, but the basic question is, how do you set the server or client protocol (TCP or UDP)?

    Thank you,

    G.
