    Did you know that the largest body of fresh water in the world is not Lake Michigan? It is the water reservoir under the Sahara. The sandstone is porous and the rain that fell when the Sahara was in a temperate climate got trapped under there.

    Edit: The Sahara did not become a desert because of a shift in the Earth's axis. Axis wobble is a normal dynamic of our rotation and is not directly linked to major climate change. The Sahara became a desert through natural climate shifts over the course of many thousands of years.

    SpaceToad and Eloraam have said that they will never allow the Forge to change the number of available blocks. Doing so changes the way the game is saved as is stated in the OP.

    It may be possible to make an ID extender that works with the Forge, but it would completely defeat the idea behind it.

    Under the current lighting system, light levels for day and night are handled on the chunk level. You can see this if you have a slow computer or stand(or fly) high enough when day changes to night and vice versa. Each chunk will turn from day to night in a specific progression. Map editors spend a significant portion of their processing on relighting the chunks that have been changed. Simply, the current lighting system is crap which is why Notch is changing it in 1.7.

    The new system uses texture-based lighting with different kinds of light for the sky and for blocks. Skylight changes based on time of day and is handled on the block level. Block lights come from fire, lava, torches and whatever he adds such as the ever mythical lanterns. Each source can have different color lights which provides for some amazing new looks as Notch showed in screenshots recently.

    Now, the possible consequence of this is that the height limit may been removed by this change. The main obstacle for modders when comes to extending the height limit is that nothing outside of the chunks is lit. They would have to change the current lighting engine or the way chunks operate in order to do so. Under the new lighting engine, the light no longer needs to update the 16x16x128 block per chunk to turn from night to day. Blocks receive skylight if they are above ground and don't if they are not. With the chunk no longer a factor, I think the height limit may be removed by this change.

    Ok, that looks quite a bit simpler, too.

    One of my main problems is trying to retro-fit some of my older buildings with redstone switches, like the xor I mentioned earlier. I got one working on my outer door, but it ran under my inner door which caused a whole new set of problems. Of course, in order to make one for my inner door, I would have had to fill in parts of my basement to make that xor gate not run into the outer one.

    If this makes things smaller, I might be able to fit both into the room I have. Oh, yeah, the other part is that I had to put the outside switch for my inner door about five blocks away so I could get my inside switch within two blocks of the door. The part where I get the xor input within reasonable distance of the output is the main problem.

    Anyways, simpler and smaller would help noobs like me out alot.

But what I want to know from the experts here is, what impact will the new diode/repeater/delayer block have on all of these schematics? I've read some people say that it will simplify things a lot. Any information on how that will work?

    As far as stuttering and other issues dealing with sudden loss of framerate go, most of that has to do with the creation of new chunks and loading old chunks from the save system.

    This is because the save file is actually thousands of small files. Jeb is rewriting the save system into a single file. A couple days ago he twittered that he reduced loading time per chunk by a quarter of its current speed. There is a ton of overhead involved with opening, reading, writing and closing hundreds of individual files at one time. Using a single indexed save file will do more for optimization than much else at this point. I'm almost positive that some people's bottleneck is their read/write speed. And really, a horrible save system has nothing to do with java or c++.

    Finally a purpose for the murder holes in my fortress.

    Although I'll have to redesign a few of them to accommodate my modified design.

    In some spiral stairs in my towers, the murder holes won't line up correctly, so I've had to realign a couple staircases. Making the arrows is a pain, though. I haven't made one of those billion item per hour mob spawners, so it's all spoils of war for me.

    The spiders also feed my cloth habit badly. I think it's great that the mobs all feed into the dye system now. Except for cows, pigs and creepers, but they have their own economic niche. In fact, this update convinced me to take the game off of peaceful.

    There are 4 kinds of sheep. White, light gray, gray, and black. I got all four in one flock once. There isn't much difference between the gray and light, but you'll see it in your inventory.
