Guide-lines are your friend.
I'd practice drawing the structure/anatomy first, then build on top of that, good for your first attempt though; I still remember mine. Heh.
That's what I did first too, I practiced with 3 or 4 different vectors as guidelines, each a different position to get the basics right. It helps to compare what you draw to another one to get the proportions right too.
I see Shining Armor having a "Hey there, little bro! What's up?" type of relationship with him.
I want to see that in a future episode. Maybe Shining and Spike working together to organize Twilight birthday party? The fact that Pinkie is the PartyPony doesn't prevent them from making one.
By the way, this story has made me think of something: fics and headcanons have often claimed that Twilight and Spike have a relationship like brother and sister, or even mother and son. But what does Twilight's biological family think of him (and vice versa)? He's been around since she got her mark, so it's not like they'd never interact (though Faust has said that Celestia raised him until he was old enough to talk, since ponies don't usually run into infant dragons). What did her parents think of the omnivorous, petrivorous creature that had been assigned to their daughter? How did her brother interact? Note that Shiny didn't have a single line of dialogue with Spike throughout that entire episode--granted, he didn't speak with any of the other mane characters besides Twilight, either, and Spike was absent for most of the episode, but he was in charge of preparing the later-nonexistent bachelor party.

Hmm, well.. That's a good question. I'm not sure Twilight was given full responsibility of Spike. In a more realistic way, Spike would've stayed at the Castle and raised by ponies with a certain knowledge about Dragons until he was old enough. Of course Twilight could play with him, interact with him and, well, bond with Spike. Even if Twilight is a very responsible pony, I doubt she could handle a 'real' baby dragon at her age.
On another note, Why is it so hard?
I promised ( a long, long, long time ago ) that I'd try my hand at Pony arts. So I bought a graphic tablet last week and there it is.
I did spend a lot of time on it (over 10-15 hours, yeah I know...) but I had to learn how to use SAI at the same time, which is harder than it looks AND get used to work with this marvelous thing that is a tablet. The only thing that isn't legit on this drawing is her Cutie mark. Why? Because.
Anybody remember that one time I claimed that French Lyra says "Ciao!" to Twilight in the pilot? Well, I don't know how I screwed that up, but apparently it's Italian, not French.

Granted, I have watched a lot of French dubs just for the lulz, and the French do use "Ciao" sometimes, and it would be easily justified had the French dub used that considering there are no other common one-syllable French greetings (Bonjour, Salut, Allô, the latter of which only being used on the phone).
Well, yes. 'Ciao' is Italian and has been used quite commonly among French people, though I would say it is not something we say to greet someone but rather to say 'bye' (which we use, here in Québec. )
And well, there are no other one syllable words to say 'bye' in French: Au revoir, à bientôt, à la prochaine, etc.. It would make it harder for the crews working on translating Tv shows, wouldn't it? So they just use 'Ciao' since it has been a common expression among us, and everybody knows what it means.

Though it might be a bit early for me to say, as I have only recently seen it, that drawing of Nightmare Moon and her deceased foal, along with the short dialogue, would have to be the most powerful example of art that I have seen so far. I can always appreciate something that effortlessly stirs a mix of emotions at once.

Just finished my first Illustrator vector drawing. I think it came out rather nicely. I might go in later and animate a blink, but for now I'm going around and swapping all my avatars for this.
I can't really explain it without sounding like a total hypocritic. Basically, the first pic is cute because it's just filly twilight eating a cookie, if we look at the personality, this is quite possible to happen (although it doesn't have to be necessary in all situations), she has a general happy face and she's going all "om nom nom", the fluffyness just adds to it but isn't totally necessary, it's used an effect to make her cheeks more round, bringing it out more to the foreground using more and thicker lines. To make it more in place the artist also added extra fluffyness around the chest area.
Hnng. My heart... Too much... Cuteness.. Hnngg.. Ooh.. Computer screen, why are you always stopping me from giving a hug to Twilight?..
Anyway. Yeah... this picture is overly cute.. The extra flufflyness is simply a little detail the artist added, because it's cute as hell.

Just found something interesting. A fic that consists mainly of a 1,005-word sentence. I haven't read it yet, so I don't know if it was flawlessly executed or just a run-on, but I intend to read it in just a moment.
