so ur saying with port forwarding, do i need to shut off my firewall and the port(25565) will open?
You COULD do that, but I wouldn't recommend it. Shutting off your firewall opens you up to the evil people of the Internet. And the skiddies that want their own botnet.
ask if your on a dedicated system or a SHARED SYSTEM,
ask CPU type (EC something? quad? How does the process handle who gets next queue for processing?)
quad core(i7 4-8+ core system, not threads*),
Bandwith limiations*
Total ram allocated & what can be used preferably check on bandwith limitations & HD used.
Ask for if the HD is SSD< or standard HD.
Ask for what is your actual ram you get to use, and what os is running, and limitations placed on your system.
As for me, im being lazy and not using vps, im using my own network hosted on a 2.4gbps FiOS dedicated line. (Yet to fully really stress test the sucker beyond intentionally logging outta my main network, logging in through other nodes and mass hitting my system with different port attacks, and attempts to hammer firewall) basically stress testing network. Limited test also only shows that it runs fine with what i've had as a total of 250 users at the same time on the same system running around all doing same things (ex: using 20 computers, and having mass login spamming, and seeing what the server can handle user name wise).
Mass killing logged in accounts via console (dummy accounts) on unauthenticated "cracked" server, testing how much stress before the actual minecraft server craps itself. Where as the pc holds fine, the mc server on the other hand craps(?). Thus far unable to overload my own mc server... but only time will tell before i can find its limitations*
Running windows 7 64bit pro* w/32gigs memory, only 16gb currently allocated as rest is used for other system resources*
Pending on new i7 computers to be delievered before i actually have a stable system capable of roughly 250+ users.
I have a hard time believing you have a 5gb vps for 5/mo.
Also, this is not a lowend VPS on a box where they oversell their RAM so much that you're lucky to get any good performannce. This is completely dedicated RAM, not "You get 256 minimum but once in a blue moon it's possible to burst up to 2GB" Read the fine print on those cheapass sites. You do get exactly what you pay for.
Yeah, his is an oversold node. Advertised as such on prometeus. But still, I have a 3gb vps with dual core xeons at 3.4 GHz on an undersold node at $100 a year. Your prices are a little high.
You will not got many people on at all. OpenVZ virtualization does not play well at all with java, and you will have constant problems, i always did no matter how much ram and CPU power i had on my OpenVZ VPS. The best option is to get a XEN VPS.
Furthermore CentOS is very bloated. I recommend you use something like Debian 6 or Ubuntu server, they are generally less peculiar and somewhat easier to work with i find. You should only need to leave 500mb for the OS if you are not running anything extra on it , like a MySQL server etc
There is also the fact that the VPS probably has very little CPU power
No way xD On a shared host maybe if you run basically no plugins and have tweaked every little bit of performance you can out of it, but on a VPS which has to run the OS aswell , and the fact it is OpenVZ , no chance.
My OS (CentOS 5 32 bit) uses like 40 mb of memory. Not very high at all. I have a VPS with 2gb ram and the 2 cores that are provided to me run at 3200 MHz. OpenVZ was improved in the last year. The vSwap and other features work very well now. Don't know why so many people bash OpenVZ.
CentOS 5 can also run well on my 64mb VPS while hosting my forums, so I don't see why you think CentOS is so bloated and takes up so much memory.
With only 400GB bandwidth, you could easily be pushed over in 3200 seconds by people with small botnets. It's rare you'll get something as low as 100mbps.
All removing that feature has done is made it worse for peoples' information. If someone posts a server in the HackForums griefing section instead of feeling cool for spamming it a bit, it's probably gonna get DDoSed in no time.
Ahh, thanks. That was the answer I was looking for! I guess I'll get that filtered IP once I get $36 from donations or DDoSed. Whichever comes first.
OK, the thing about WeepCraft is that is isnt a DDoS at all. Sorry for confusing you!
Okay then, could you explain what WeepCraft is? The blacklist part. I just hear people raging about it. I only recently got back to minecraft from my hiatus in august, so I don't know much about new things like spigot and WeepCraft.
thats a nice way to think of it, but since the client itself is written in java, wouldnt there either be:
a client 'C' encoder
or
a server side java decoder?
actually
2,147,483,648-1 is the most possible. if you try to have one more slot java will crash
Why would it crash? I would assume that the servers running this would be using the 64 bit version of Java because of the high amounts of memory needed per machine. I don't know much about java, just wondering. (I do recognize that number as the maximum integer because I had that amount of mesos on maple story and it wouldn't let me pick up any more.)
Umm, a filtered ip is one way. Proxy it is another. I just want to know if getting a DDoS will affect my metered bandwidth! And sorry, I won't take you up on the offered stress test.
You are kidding me right? Do you even know what a DDoS is? WeepCraft cant so anything compared to a full scale DDoS attack!
You just said that WeepCraft can't do anything compared to a full scale DDoS attack. That means that WeepCraft is still a DDoS attack (albeit on a much smaller scale).
Plus nobody is answering my main question. What affect does it have on my metered bandwidth?
The upload speeds are NOT 1 mb/s. If you look at the reviews, people are posting upload speeds of 9 mbps to 12 mbps, while not awesome, isn't that bad either. That may have been some network problems because if you look at the last review, the person posted an upload speed over 100 mbps.
hey ive currently setup a server i was given after a local company closed down with 5 virtual machines so i could host a server for you if you wanted i can do tekkit or vannila
Well, if a DDoS attack does happen, I'm almost positive you can contact the host/ISP and tell them about it and report it. You most likely will not be charged but may be fined a fee!
Pfft, are you serious? Most active MineCraft servers get DDoSed multiple times daily because of WeepCraft. I don't think reporting it to my host will help.
Here's a ticket I sent to them:
Me: What's your policy on being the recipient of a DDOS attack? Them: If you're the recipient of a DDoS attack, and it's large enough your IP will be nullrouted automatically. If you think you're likely to be the recipient of a DDoS attack, I highly suggest you look at our DDoS protection services (only available for Seattle servers).

What version is your OS? 32 bit or 64 bit?
How much RAM does your system have?
(Press Start -> right click "Computer" -> click properties)
I also suggest not making the dump file so big. 1024mb to start with is more than enough!

Have you tried using a booter?

You didn't put a space between the dash and the permission. You are supposed to put a space between the dash and the permission. Understand now?
