I've been running our servers for a few weeks now just using the command line and hey0 + mods, and I decided to give this a go.

I tossed it in a vanilla folder without a world generated, downloaded hey0 131 and craftbook to test with, changed the port to something that won't conflict with all the others and extended the firewall to cover it, and fired it up. Everything goes smooth until I try to login and get this 'no default group' error pasted below.

It seems like almost every server owner takes 1-2 days to update the server, and 3 to approve whitelists. It's so annoying.

If the default server did whitelisting then we wouldn't need hey0 but since you're talking about servers that are whitelisted, they are obviously running something (even if it's not hey0) that takes time to patch against notch.

He didn't screw up breaking blocks. It's related entirely to the player movement prediction. You can prove this by standing perfectly still, then start breaking them without moving.

    I stand corrected.

Well, since he screwed up player movement prediction, it's not that far fetched.

What an absolute silly and pointless topic.

You are doing a "what if" about a patch that has not come out and about a bug that may be in the patch that has not come out.

What if what if what if.

This is definitely not a completely pointless topic, because obviously, you can't pick up what the sheep drop. Who's to say the same thing will happen if I killed a skeleton? It drop arrows, and I can't pick them up.

ok then, keeping with the same what if..

What if when he releases this patch you can no longer place blocks!!11

Well, since he screwed up breaking blocks, that's not too far fetched.

    Quote from ButtChew »
Couple guys here at the office have a MC server hosted on their home desktop. Word of the game spread and around 6-7 of us play on it regularly now. With our "full" load, it obviously can get a bit laggy at times do to it being a personal computer and internet connection limits.

We are now considering getting it hosted, preferably through a minecraft hosting service (dont want to mess with VPS, not tech savy enough for that).

If we go through a MC hosting service, is it possible to transfer our existing world over? I'm assuming we'd have some sort of FTP access to the new server ... and we'd obviously have full access to our "old" desktop server files.

Is this a pain? Simple process? Dependent on new host?

Any enlightenment would be great! Thanks.

I've only done it from windows to windows so if your hosting OS is windows, yes absolutely. If it's linux (which is usually cheaper) then probably but I've not done that.

posted a message on Multiplayer is coming, need of a sturdier material?
    Quote from Incorporeality »
    Quote from Romally »
What stopping them from pillaring using dirt to get over a wall?

A more sensible system than just adding one more walling material that disallows or either greatly greatly slows all removal and placement of block within a radius of some kind of claim flag?

Lets be honest here op, we're not going to solve the wall problem with a new material. Even if every single wall was obsidian, they'd be too weak. WHy? Because you still chip through a m3 of obsidian quicker than you would a m3 of freaking limestone irl, and there are exponentially less people available in any town here to guard. So you have the combination of ridiculously weak materials and a scarcity of people to guard your walls (in reality almost noone is going to be able to get people to guard their walls, which is why its funny to me that people talk about this so much. This isn't even an mmo lol, there won't be a ton of people walking the rounds of walls - any guard would be better spent in active scouting outside the wall with a reserve of htem doing their own thing inside waiting for attack notifications (you could easily put an alarm layer all throughout your wall that would set off warning lights or a piece of tnt on an obsidian pedestal if it was destroyed btw, but that's still not enough with the way you can eat through any material so quickly). Its going to be impossible to defend any town in this game with anything other than having more people than the raiders (and if you're wondering, yes, they'll all have diamond picks to break through your obsidian walls).

So, yeah, just add a flag that removes the ability to build within the range of it (A good enough range for a decent sized town but set so they'll need more for a large city) and takes an obscene amt of material to create (mebbe a 3x3 obsidian obelisk 20 high with some diamond blocks for a cap, something like that) and problem solved. Include grappling hooks or just leave it up to the already suitable cannons to allow raiders to get through the wall, or just make it ridiculously slow to destroy a block within the radius rather than impossible)(say a couple minutes for a block of cobble w/ a diamond pick, more like real life which still leaves the raiders the advantage since there's no way there's going to be enough guards to catch them carving their passage if they're smart and pick a spot in the wall that's unlikely to see much attention), and of course you'd leave the build/destroy speed of anyone allowed by the flag the same.

This way raiders either have to be smart (get you to let them into town, camp out the doors and rush in when someone goes out, find a weakspot where your wall extends too close to a tree or hill, or just build a cannon to batter it down). As things are now raiders will win every single time, and eventually the servers will just start calling even legit raiders griefers and kicking them all, because the gameplay as is is so horribly tilted to the attacker. To make things work you'll have to give the defender bonuses to make up for the massive numerical superiority they woudl have irl (as opposed to ingame when raider groups will be much larger proportionally since there can only be like 50 people in the world at any one time even on a good server and the raiders will get all their people online at once, probably when the town has most its people offline - you can't "wake up" from being off the internet to go defend the walls lol)

But yeah, who knows if Notch will do any of this. Doesn't really matter. Some modders are definitely going to do it and they'll be the ones to create the best experience like with all games. Or at least with all good games - the dev creates the engine and the core gameplay and the players take it from there.

Btw I just thought about this but is Notch's name a reference to Natch from the Jump 225 series by David Louis Edelman? It just struck me that the names were very similar and if so uh-oh. Hopefully the final version of minecraft won't crash the world hehe.

Incorporeality is on the right track here with the obelisk. I would suggest that the zone be column shaped to prevent tunneling and thus having to build obelisks from bedrock to clouds and balance the radius accordingly. For instance, if it's incredibly difficult to build them, say 50 diamond blocks in a perfect sphere on top of the suggested 3x3 obsidian tower, then it should have a 100 block radius (or maybe a 128 block sphere of protection and thus column shaped zone not required unless world height is raised). If it's only 9 diamond blocks on a 3x3 obelisk, then a 30 block radius. I'm not sure what the perfect balance would be. Although another thought I just had would be that protection only extends to player placed blocks, but I doubt each is flagged as such currently.

So after 10 days of the massive bug of blocks respawning being released he has yet to look into why that is occuring.

    Woot?

Just be like blizzard please Notch and don't tell us anything at all, at least then we can imagine you working, instead of know for a fact you aren't.

At least it only took a few hours of actual work to get so much accomplished. Imagine if he sits down and does an entire day of work! The people calling beta might be on to something soonish. At least then he could charge more for the game, right?

I'm using the, as of earlier today, latest version of the modified BlockIt and while that mostly fixes the problem, it's not as good as it was pre-11/10.

Where's it say we are paying to test? Where's the bug report form?

Nowhere does it say "buy the full version and help test the alpha" as some people are misunderstanding. It very clearly states "Help FUND the development of Minecraft".

    It also VERY CLEARLY states
Read the copyright information for more information.

If after reading that, and the FAQ, you still think you're not alpha testing this product, and NOT entitled to it working "better" for you, I suggest you ask for a refund. You're clearly not smart enough to grasp the obvious.

I did read both. The FAQ really only addresses purchasing issues and nothing in the copyright says we are testers.

Here's a good quote from the copyright: "When you purchase the game, you pay for it as it is right now. Future updates are an added bonus."

That's all I want. I want the version I paid for prior to the 11/10 update.

Perhaps a reasonable solution would be for us to know/talk to the alpha testers. Unless that's a sticky I missed somewhere, I'll go look.

You ARE talking to the alpha testers... when you bought the software, YOU became an alpha tester too...

Ah, and it says that on the official website?

    This is what I see:

    --------------------------------
    Purchase now!

When Minecraft is finished, it will sell for €20.00.
If you pre-purchase now during alpha, you pay just €9.95!
The price will go up at beta.

Please note that when you buy the game, you're paying for the game as it is right now!
You will receive any and all future updates for free as a bonus.
Read the copyright information for more information.
Please log in or register to pre purchase.
(Click here to buy the game for someone other than yourself)

    Here's what you get:

You never have to pay again!
You get all future versions of the game, including all expansions and addons.
You help fund the development of Minecraft
    Custom skins in multiplayer
Once you've bought the game, it's yours. No DRM.
    Survival mode!

Where's it say we are paying to test? Where's the bug report form?

Nowhere does it say "buy the full version and help test the alpha" as some people are misunderstanding. It very clearly states "Help FUND the development of Minecraft".

The distinct lack of details makes troubleshooting next to impossible.

Imagine calling a car mechanic and saying "My car doesn't work, why not?"

    Are you the server admin?
    Which OS?
    How did you install MC?
    Are you running any mods?
Are you running the client on the server?
Have you moved away from the spawn point?
