i've watched it last year until 2-3 eps but then i dropped it. mainly because of the mean granny . but it gets a good rank at MAL. opinion?
I haven't seen Hanasaku Iroha, but try not to rely on MAL rankings and reviews. They mean nothing.
I've watched it, and it's actually one of my favorites for being the most mellow and relaxing show I know about after Aria The Animation. I'd highly suggest you to watch it (Either on Crunchyroll if you got a paying user, or download it in 720p+ because the artwork is AMAZING) and another things that I find great about it is that it's a PA works anime. Most anime they have produced have a very mature theme and have little to no fanservice.
Also, if you read through many enough reviews, it would be easy to split out the fanboy reviews from the more serious reviews.

From a girls point of view, it's really easy to point out most guys pretending to be girls though. They usually don't think and just go all over the top about their "New genitals".

No. You would have to follow the guidelines. The reason I do this is to get as much as possible story out of this. If people went out making characters all open mindedly, we would risk having several too similar characters. With this method, I can make realistic characters that don't crash with each other, which was my ultimate goal.

But when a bully took her lunch money and pushed her down, Rachel gave that girl third degree burns. That one didn't blow over too well. Once she got into high school, however, drama started. All kinds, too. Her parents were fighting, yelling at each other. Girls at school would get jealous of her good looks and pester her.
