I think a more gradual slope would be better, have it go up 1 block every 4 or 5 blocks, with a powered rail as the sloped rail to negate loss of speed when going up, you would need less powered rails.
You can get redstone and glass from trading, ender chests, which is nice when exploring far away villages, and everything from the nether, including mushrooms and gold from zombie pigmen.
Notch has stated several time he doesn't mind people making games similar to Minecraft, he's more interested in the games then trademarks and copyrights, and has even advertised a few of them. If anyone should complain, it's him.
dude how are we suppose to get diamond iron gold and emeralds? theres no caves on superflat...
Diamond, iron and gold can be found in blacksmith chests, and emeralds from villagers. Plus, you can get iron from iron golems and zombies, and gold from zombie pigmen.
Only problem with that is getting to the spawner before the trap goes off. Also, if you're looking for xp, a drowning trap works quite well with the creeper spawners.
And also, wouldn't redstone lamps be a bit hard to get? The nether is turned into another world just like the normal one, so no glowstone clusters. I would think torches would work fine, unless you had some reason to want to turn it on or off (Which could be achieved anyway by simply walking out of the radius for the spawner to work.
Actually, the traps don't work anymore, ever since they changed how TNT is activated. And you can get glowstone in the dungeons, including a little bit with the chicken spawners, although I have to say I don't really like not haveing a true nether, it means no alchemy or any other nether stuff. And the reason to turn the light off is so they aren't constantly spawning while you kill them.
Although passive mobs don't spawn, there are chicken spawners in the dungeons, so you can at least have a chicken farm.
I just started a new map, and I'm thinking about rigging something up with redstone lamps to light the grass to allow a bunch of chickens to spawn, then use water to flush them to an area for slaughter, so I don't have to bother breeding them.

Spawns on an island with lots of other islands around.
Centered on the spawn point, this shows most of the islands, but I found a lot of islands outside that area, including a rather large one to the south. The island in the north and the one in the south-west are mushroom islands.
This is the main group of big islands. There are a couple more I couldn't get in view.
A lot of shallow tunnels could make for some interesting exploration

As you can see, no roof, grass floor, and they're still breeding.
