I mean the scrolls mojang is making isn't even related from what I know, if it was an rpg that takes place on a far off island called sorrowwind they would have a point, but really?Posted in: News

Java is the best language for making games.
now stop derailing thread.
OT: It really depends on how much time you spend learning. A program that simply generates some 3d terrain wouldn't take that long if you just looked at some tuts and copied aspects of it, but if you actually wanted to understand it all and be able to do it from scratch it would take alot longer. Also it depends on wether you want to implement a game into it, and how complex the terrain will be. For example simply rendering a random hill covered plane with a grass texture is alot simpler than generating terrain with inteligent placement of lakes, trees, and other terrain features. And all of that is more complicated if you want to create a voxel based editable terrain...so it really depends.

so what you're saying is, java isn't the best language for making games?
Because that's all I said. Nowhere did i say java was bad for making games. all I said was that it wasn't the best, and you just backed that up.
But driving is the primary function of a car, just as programming is the primary function of a programming language. The OP however wanted to learn Java specifically for game developement, which is more specific, like picking a car that drives fast.
Perhaps you should revisit the op. The OP is going to learn java so he can make games, so he doesn't know java, and as far as we know is not inclined to pick it over any other language....why do you seem personally offended by this?
Jeesh, ever since minecraft came out every amerature programmer on earth suddenly has a fetish for java.

Yea its pretty easy to get the free student version, except that it has to be used non-commercially, and everything you make with it has a watermark.

seriously though that type of game is really appealing, except that the player base is mostly **** and i would feel silly playing a lego game.

also, you probably have at least one friend that is allowed to buy M rated games, just ask them to buy it for you (what I did when I was a kid :P)
