OT: It really depends on how much time you spend learning. A program that simply generates some 3d terrain wouldn't take that long if you just looked at some tuts and copied aspects of it, but if you actually wanted to understand it all and be able to do it from scratch it would take alot longer. Also it depends on wether you want to implement a game into it, and how complex the terrain will be. For example simply rendering a random hill covered plane with a grass texture is alot simpler than generating terrain with inteligent placement of lakes, trees, and other terrain features. And all of that is more complicated if you want to create a voxel based editable terrain...so it really depends.
There is overhead, but it isn't huge. C is faster than C++, so why not make a game with that? In short, because it is way too much work. BC had an article where back in the day if you coded in C you were a noob because it was slower than assembly.

There is no such thing as a 'best language' for making games.
Car analogy time: You can't say "an Audi a(something) is the best car for driving". Well you can, but it wouldn't make much sense. Some people will want a fast car. Others will want one that is good looking. Others may want a car that's strong, and there'll also be people who want a car with a lot of loading capacity. Perhaps you want a fast car which also looks nice? Or perhaps you care more about one that can drive on rough terrain while still being able to go quite fast. Some people may enjoy driving an old Beetle, even though it's small and not very fast.
But driving is the primary function of a car, just as programming is the primary function of a programming language. The OP however wanted to learn Java specifically for game developement, which is more specific, like picking a car that drives fast.
The same, more or less, can be said about programming languages. Don't waste time criticizing the language somebody else is using. Perhaps he just feels most comfortable programming in that language. Perhaps that language has some features he really likes. Perhaps he has other reasons.
Perhaps you should revisit the op. The OP is going to learn java so he can make games, so he doesn't know java, and as far as we know is not inclined to pick it over any other language....why do you seem personally offended by this?

imo neither of them are true games, because neither have real objectives, but overall it depends on the day of the week. I go to garrys mod when i want to build a big space ship, and i go to minecraft when i want to build a big spaceship (that doesn't work).
how about, you look at the price and performance of each individual processor (or better yet possible rigs as a whole) instead of trying to categorize all the products of one company as inherently better than the products of the other?
