I've just done a massive glass tower, and had glass smelting all the time on 8 furnaces, didn't have a problem. Used them normally, as I would have on SP.
What Kane_Hart says might sound stupid, but actually works. That and blocking buckets. No matter if it is water or lave. Buckets 1) don't work & 2) start lagging your server. Have 5 people start trying to use the buckets, and you'll have bricked your server in 10 seconds.
@OP you sound exactly like the Angry Video Game Nerd ranting on an old quirky NES game or something.
It's funny, actually.
I don't have that hard feelings on the update, but.. what you said is quite true
A 4.
I was mostly waiting for the Damage fix on the SMP mode, and that didn't get to be in this release. And.. well.. the other important thing was the trains.. that doesn't work either.
Well.. the new lanterns and torches thing seemed interesting too, and those were also axed.. I dunno, every important think was cut off.
We got a new world.. but.. after wondering around a bit I found it kinda pointless.. perhaps time will tell that it isn't.
And oh well, it could deserve a 7.. but severe, game-breaking bugs are everywhere. 1.20 had some black shadows everywhere, that got replaced with normal ones when you broke a cube nearby. Water buckets arent working in smp either. In single player you die way easier than before, and if you do you lose your items.. I think it is more of a SVN version, just added stuff, didn't check anything before releasing. It's ok though, it's an alpha.
I think Notch said in the minecraft.net/boo page that the lower you are, the more torches you need to be safe. At bedrock level I think you'd need a torch in every tile xD.. or 1 torch every 2 blocks or so..
--edit
And yes.. on some saves the thing is just screwed up and mobs show up on totally lit rooms like
---
Even then, in the worlds that it is not screwed up, monster spawning is just a li'l bit more agressive. Well.. not little.. it's a bit more agressive. Not unplayable, though. Well.. not unplayable in that way. It's sluggishly slow now (8-15fps)
Notch posted somewhere: "don't get too attached to your savegames" or something along those lines, game mechanics are long to be changed, and you might find tomorrow that the game is a 3rd person shooter or a mmorpg
Update FACT: It's way, way slower. Used to play at normal @40-60fps, now I play at a short distance @15-20fps. If near my castle @8fps and have to revert to tiny :\. Fancy graphics is a no go now.
I always put a torch every 6 blocks (torch, 5 spaces, torch), so that the shadows don't ever get too dark, and I didn't, and don't have any problems. Moreso, I have started a new game, and it doesn't have problems either.
I can confirm more agressive spawning, though, lots of creepers outside the walls, even spawning on the shadows of trees >_>, but not on my li'l castle, it's appropriately lit
My bucket o' water refuses to work properly. (On SMP with new server). It isn't even detected by the server. You put some water.. and poof.. it disappears.
It's not meant to be that way! It's survival, not simcity!!
Why can't it be both?
Because it wouldn't make sense at all. One man isn't supposed to be able to relight a whole mansion, get materials, kill mobs, do the laundry, and make the bed all in one day. That's what MP is for.
OH MY GOD, don't you understand how grave it is??? How will I be able to light up my huge 30story castle now?, having 4950 torches relighted every night is impossible!
or @
Oh noes!, now how will my farm grow in the night???
& @ etc...
You don't. You can't. It costs a lot to mantain a single house. Think just a LITTLE bit, a real mansion eats lots of resources, well, it's the same here!
Perhaps it's possible in multiplayer to maintain a f***king castle, with so many people relighting and helping gather the resources. But come on!, be real!, it's just you against the mobs and the nature, not even in movies does the man in the solitary isle build a shelter the size of a palace!!!
It's not meant to be that way! It's survival, not simcity!!
What makes this game good? I have to battle or run my way out of my modest home (past creepers and spiders that are waiting on top of the mountain to jump on top of me as soon as I leave the door) every morning, and have only 10 real life minutes to grab as much wood, sand, leather, wool, and meat as I can before running to shelter again, just to be able to survive!
When you have 2 or 3 extra minutes you might even remodel a bit, build 1 or 2 stories of wall, or look for some cactus to help defend your house, but not much more!.
Stop whining, right now it's pretty easy to survive, and that's the point of the game.
oh, @
How awesome is my ultra cool Castle with levitating gardens and towers and farms and stuff on the top of the hill, if you can't see it in the night??
It IS AWESOME when you manage to light it up, with effort and time. Right now you just throw up lots of easily made infinite light sources. Anybody can do that. How is that awesome?.
It's exactly the same as when you see THE giant structure, but know it's been made with cheated resources. It's not awesome anymore. Effort makes it awesome.

Just set to true the hell option on the server.properties file.
